Thanks. for all the wonderful pie recipes but I can't buy organic vanilla at this time so does anyone know what I can substitute for it? I know vanilla is very powerful and is a good flavoring for cakes and pies but can something else be used. Thanks ;)

Blessed, I started a thread about Chai that has a "Chai Spice Recipe". Please look back through the threads and you will find it. The recipe calls for 4 ingredients which are all easily obtained in raw format from frontier coop. If you are in a bind, you can get all 4 ingredients at a main stream grocery store, but they may have been dried at high temps.

there is vanilla bean,
vanilla flavoring
vanillin
vanilla extract

some are raw, some are not,
I personally use organic vanilla beans that I buy from a friend who lives in Mexico, they just ship me some when ever I need them, I know you can buy them on line, but they are expensive.

However, for 5 years I used vanilla extract, just like Rhio does, and she says you are using so little like 1 tsp in an entie dish that feeds 8 to 12 people, that she doesn't worry, she also used dijon and other non-raw items.

I have found that alot of raw chefs, will use some seasonings or condiments that are not raw.

So, personally go for it, and buy what you can afford.

There is no substiture for the flavor of vanilla.

almond extract can be used, but has an entirely different flavor, that I don't care for. I love vanilla, and use it often.
