I recently returned from a two-week, four-city, cross-country trip where I stayed Raw the whole time! It was my first airplane trip since going raw, and I equipped myself with a new, collapsible cooler on wheels that fits in the overhead bins: http://www.keepyourcooler.com/rolling-coolers.html

With this cooler, I was able to make things ahead, which lasted most of my trip (fudge, corn bread, savory almond cheese, salad dressing). Nothing spoiled. I was also able to buy produce on the road and have a place to keep it. The model I bought also had a top section for things like utensils and napkins. Some tips, based on my experience:

1) Keep ice cubes in sealed plastic bags so stuff doesn't get wet. I used "plastic" ice cubes so I wouldn't have any leakage.

2) You may have to tip the cooler on its side to get it to fit in the overhead storage bins, so protect anything that might leak (like salad dressing) with ziploc bags.

3) From other threads I've read, bringing a cooler may not be practical for international travel, due to customs restrictions about fresh food. But it was fine for my U.S. trip.

On my last leg home, 30 minutes before boarding, I pulled out my bowl of salad, cut up an avocado, tossed in some soaked almonds, and poured on the last of my salad dressing. I sat eating, fully satisfied as I watched others chowing down on McDonald's food. I felt really empowered.

By the way, this was my first extended air trip, in 21 years of business travel, where I actually lost two pounds instead of gaining a bunch! And absolutely no jet lag. Yea for Raw! :D

Other air travel tips? Happy trails!

On air flights we usually travel with a bag of fruit and a prepared salad witha jar of dressing it works great. A couple of years ago we went to Hong Kong and I decided I *had* to try the food. After a day or so we decided it wasn't really that exciting and went back to buying mangosteens, goji berries, coconuts and more from fruit vendors. It was the best holiday food ever!!

I just LOVE mangosteens.

We also decided (like others here) that it's often better NOT to eat rather than eat sub standard food.

Cheers,
Sheryl

Also: Remember that wherever you are staying - a tub or sink full of cold water keeps food very cool. Just store in ziploc bags and drop in the water!
