View Full Version : pregnant and want to go raw, advice?

I am 19weeks pregnant and i want to go raw. i am addicted to sugar and need to get off of it. i had blood pressure problems with my first pregnancy and ended up in a highly medicated birth. i am planning a homebirth right now and i am afraid that because of the way that i've been eating, either myself, my baby or both of us will end up sick(or sick-er). I eat pretty much anything right now, but i was vegetarian for about 4 years and vegan for 1.5years. i tried to eat raw once before and couldn't do it because i couldn't prepare the foods. i tried to sprout things and all i got were fruit flies. i tried tomake cauliflower "mashed potatoes" and they were nasty. I love the idea of raw and the cookbooks have such yummy looking foods. i'm so frustrated.

is it safe to be pregnant and go raw? how do i make sure i get all my nutrients? i really want to be healthy...can anyone help me?

Welcome to the boards and congratulations.

I will find a few threads that talk about being raw and pregnant.

There doesn't seem to be much information out there regarding being pregnant and eating the raw lifestyle.

So, you just have to talk to others that have done it!

I think if you eat a well balanced diet and a variety of fruits, nuts, greens, good fats (avocados and olive oil), you should get all your nutrients in.

If you are all raw, your birth will more than likely be easy compared to if you are eating SAD.

My second and third births were so much easier than my first and I was not 100% raw with those two.

So, if I was 100%, things would go so much smoother I am sure!

Research as much as you can. Like I said though there is not much information about a raw pregnancy.

I do have an email from a lady that went through a 100% raw pregnancy and I talked with her and she had some tips.

So, if you'd like her information, just let me know and I'll get that to you.

There could be more on raw pregnancies if you hit the banana at the top of the screen and type that in, you might come up with more.

check out the The Garden diet website as Jingee who runs it with her husband is raw and has had 3 children. Also Shazzie has a raw website and has had a baby recently (mostly raw I think she was during this time but not sureif 100%)

and high raw.

first of all, don't have that all or nothing attitude - I know because I had it, LOL.

Just start eating more healthily. What I am eating.

Breakfast: fruits, fruits, fruits. I am into orange juice right now, so just an great fresh orange juice does the trick.

Lunch: A big green salad with nuts/seeds and plenty of lemon. I actually crave my salad and miss it if I can't have it. I eat not a serving, I eat the whole serving bowl! Make sure you add some raw spinach leaves and parsley for iron. Lemon has vit. C that helps absorb the iron.

Dinner: More fruits and some nuts perhaps, or something prepared like the non-cooked houmous with veg crudetes. Or grated carrot with pinapple mmm! divine!


I too had a terrible sweet tooth. Mind you, every time I eat cooked food, I want to eat dessert. if I eat just my salad, I am fine, I don't crave anything else.

Sweet stuff: You will find fruits very satisfying. A sweet orange will be great, dates and raisings, dry figs/apricots/prunes, better than chocolate and rich in iron too! Pinapple is sweet.

Special desserts: walnuts with honey, oh dear, very sweet and satisfying. Tahini paste with honey, excellent. or, if you are desperate, just honey, LOL.

I do eat cooked food here and again though, because children/hubby are not 100% raw. So I would say we are 75% raw. Don't kick yourself over it.

Every piece of fruit you eat, counts. Every salad too! Every little raw addition, every little improvement. Especially now that we are so prone to cravings/moods/hormones, etc, be kind to yourself and do one meal at a time.

maybe for your sweet tooth try drinking sesame seed milk. I have found that this has REALLY helped with my needing even the raw deserts.

It is worth a shot :)
