I'm am about to be starting the RAW diet, but I am concerned about my son's weight. He is 4 1/2 years old and underweight being on SAD. He eats ALL day!! Before I start him on RAW, I wanted to make sure I give him the right foods to help with gaining weight. (or more concerned that he doesn't lose any) I have read other posts on suggestions for children and weight in this section. But when doing research, I found info on Organic Hempseed Oil. Does anyone use this? Can you explain why you do? And if you do, what do you put it in? Or ideas to use it for my son? I get a little nervous believing what's written at stores, since everyone has a different idea of a good "diet" I would like some personal experience comments.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Finding Me!

You have just the one son? I have 4 children...ALL but one was raised from birth on SAD and all were considered "underweight"...in other words, they were low on the doctor's percentile chart...not too low, but not "average" either.

Thing is, they ate and ate too but at the same token, I'm only 5'4", my husband is like a few inches taller than me, my mother-in-law and sisters-in-law are all shorter than I am at around 5 feet give or take a few inches. And as for weight, my husband and I are slim, mother in law USED to be very slim until she got hypothyroidism.

My point, there is more than just diet that plays a role in the size of your child...genetics plays a part as well. Also, not knowing what his current/soon-to-be former diet is, eating raw more than likely will balance him out. He might get a little smaller at FIRST, but will balance out and gain what he needs later.

My two oldest children were very short and small...now according to the percentile charts, they are around the 50% range. My youngest son is "average" weight/height and my youngest daughter is small for her age. They're all different, yet eating the same.

Well, sorry to have rambled...didn't even answer about hempseed oil...I don't use it. But just wanted to give you a different perspective on "normal" growth rates for children based on charts and the "norm".

Hi Rawkinlocs!

My son, at 4 1/2 still isn't on the charts. (I think 5% below) And yes, I understand the genetics of it. I'm 5'2, his father 5,8, and we're both slim. He was also one month premature. So I do understand some reasoning for his weight. On the SAD diet, he eats and eats, and eats! And its carbs! meats and cheese! yuk!! and a little of the good stuff. (But cooked). I really don't think he has any weight to lose on RAW. I just want him to eat healthy, and still be able to put on weight. I also want to make sure when he goes to school next year, that there aren't concerns over his weight... where I could be "reported". So, I'm trying to find the best RAW foods to make him healthy, growing, and not so underweight. He also gets sick (colds) alot. Another reason for RAW!!

So that was a little about the situation.... back to the question about raw organic hempseed oil. :D

I understand. Just be sure he gets plenty of greens in his diet (those green smoothies are GREAT for doing that and what I do sometimes is sneak some sesame seeds in with the greens for an added calcium boost!

I think that either hempseed oil OR hempseed powder added to smoothies may help the little guy out from what I've heard of it.

Either way, congrats and best to you and your family in your new raw life!!! Isn't it exciting? :D

i know someone whose daughter gained needed weight by adding the green smoothies to her diet. Her daughter was really small also. You might try that.
It is a staple in our diet!

For fats for my children, I use avocados, olives, young coconuts and nut butters. oh and flax crackers. Personally I am not very big on teh use of oils but that is just what works for us.

Good luck to you on your new lifestyle!

We use the hemp oil in our chocolate (super) smoothies. We also eat lots of fats:

avocados - choc. pudding - smoothie thickener
bananas - ice cream - smoothies - in cereal - eaten alone
olives - in wraps - salads
coconut meat, milk and oil - smoothies - ice creams - fudge - cookies - dips - even have done the oil just by the spoonful!
flax taco shells
Nuts ... up the wazoo!

And yes at least one green drink a day. I've not had so much time this week and have been slipping on the green drink, but I'm going to start what Victoria Boutenko suggests, making a ton of it in the morning and drinking throughout the day.

We've been high raw for just about 2 years, my children just had their well check-up visits at the doctors. They are still in the 50% range. Which amazed me, because I lost weight and thought they would too. But no.

Be a little careful with flax oil - most brands are rancid. I've only once had really fresh flax oil and it was beautiful and smooth tasting - quite lovely. Most flax tastes awful because it's gone off. It's a very unstable oil and quite prone to do that. I cringe when I hear people choking down flax oil 'beacause it's good for them' knowning that if it's that hard to take it's actually quite the opposite.

Blended things are a great idea - apparently eating food blended will put on more weight then the same amount straight - something about making nutrients more available or something.

Cheers,
Sheryl

Thanks Sheryl. I appreciate the feeback. I just realized I bought Flax oil and forgot to put it in the fridge. Guess I'll be throwing it out now. I'll stick to grinding the seeds instead. :o

Hi, mom of 3 skinny but healthy kids here .

My husband and I were both bones growing up on SAD food so it's hereditary for them. I recently went to a Raw Food counseler who suggested Hemp protien or Golden Flax seed (ground in a coffee grinder) for protein. She felt I (my family to because they eat what I eat) am not getting enough so I have been adding ground flax into almost every recipe. i just tried the hemp protein this morning in my buckwheat shake and could taste it but is was doable.

For fat try the chocolate mousse recipe ( just search with the banana) my kids love it !
