View Full Version : oil or nuts?? for digestion
I am needing some guidance with this. When i eat veggies (I food combine daily) what would digest/absorb better and faster.. ~~~~ oil or nuts. I use flax or hemp oil and my nuts are soaked almonds or sunflower seeds. I use no other fat sources but those two. All other nuts or avocado do not digest well. I have a couple of tablespoons at each meal and a couple of ounces of nuts. I am maintaining my weight and could lose 4 lbs but I am not obesessing over it ANYMORE. I occasionally have IBS flare ups when I am PMS ing or under stress.
Thanks for your help.

Hey Jen!
This is something I am pondering myself as I only use olive oil and 1 tsp a day. I know that from researching flax seeds, the brown ones tend to be harsher on the digestive system vs the golden ones. Have you tried using only one type of oil at a time to see which one gives the negative result? :)
Actually I think my post is confusing..I eat either the oil or the nuts with my veggies...NOT both together --that would kill me. Most of the time i use oil but was wondering if the soaked nuts would be better digested or absorbed in less time. Flaxseeds or meal are not appealing to me...I keep it simple with the almonds or the oils.

From what I understand with the soaking, is that the soaking removes the enzyme inhibitors that make digestions more difficult. I've noticed my own experience in the past when I ate nuts, that soaking them made them so much easier to eat and infact, I wasn't craving them 24/7.
wow, sounds like you are very sensitive....what do you usually have first thing in the morning? Digestion is so broad b/c I tend to think of the breaking down of food in the mouth, then reaching the stomach, etc etc. How long have you been dealing with this digeestion issue?
:)
I have since 1998 truly recognized my sensitivities to foods. I have found great success with food combining...but want to lessen the time of meal digestion b/tween meals therefore my post...which is quicker oil alone with veggies or soaked nuts with veggies alone.
ps fruit is wehat makes up my morning meals.

it's less work for the "breaking down" process if you use oil than the fiberous choice that nuts are. I would suggest oil--but then again, flax tends to be acidic in the body so depends too where as almonds tend to be alkaline.

I use a little bit of tahini in my salads (mixed with orange juice, or blended with strawberries, for example). I find it easy to digest and yummy.
Best,

Are you sure about flax being an acid food. I use a lot of flax as I have found that my joints get a little stiff if I go for a period without them but I do not want to overindulg in acid forming foods.

Hey Sport !!!!
Yes, that is what I've come across on sites that discuss food acidity and alkalinity. Flax oil is considered on the acidic side. but I should clarify myself, acidity is important too but it's more of the balance of the combo that makes a difference. I know for myelf that I get "queasy" after taking flax seeds.....less with the oil but overall, it just doesn't ride well with me. speaking of joints, have you tried drinking raw apple cider vinegar?
Here is to the thread I did a while back ago for acid/alkaline foods. It's an interesting topic that I still need to learn more about.
