View Full Version : Vanilla Chai Mylk

Ok folks, this is as good or better than any Vanilla Chai Milk in the grocery store.

First, you make some almond mylk. I will give you instructions on preparing a single 12 oz serving of Vanilla Chai Almond Mylk.

Chai Spice
3/4 t cinnamon
1/4 t ginger powder
1/4 t clove
1/4 t nutmeg

Add the Chai Spice and a dash of vanilla extract (or vanilla bean method)
to 12 oz of Almond Mylk and blend. Then run through cheese cloth (or paint strainer bag, or fine strainer of any kind if that is all you have) to remove any spice ingredient that will not dissolve in mylk. You now have Vanilla Chai Mylk.

It is important to strain after blending to remove any undissolved spice. Do not try to omit this step. Also, Chai Spice and Pumpkin Pie Spice are basically the same thing. Therefore, if you have Pumpkin Pie Spice, you can use that in place of the Chai Spice recipe I gave you.

I do not have the measurements for 1/2 gallon of Almond Mylk, but you can just increase the Chai Spice and Vanilla to suit your taste.

I have some freshly made Macadamian nut milk in the frig. I wonder how that would taste compared to the almond with this?

Punky, this particular recipe just seems to do better with almond mylk. I personally have not put it in macadamian mylk, but I would say make this recipe with almond mylk.

I think your right; i'll just make it with almond mylk and save my mac milk to drink as is.

I have some freshly made Macadamian nut milk in the frig.Considering the current price of macadamia nuts, this has to be very valuable milk indeed!

I just wanted to add that you also have to add agave. In addition, you can also freeze some of the vanilla chai mylk in ice trays. You then blend some of the frozen vanilla chai mylk with some that is not frozen to make a "Vanilla Chai Mylk Shake".

My Vanilla Chai Mylk Shake is with out a doubt my number one drink now.

Another tip, take 12 oz of Almond Mylk and put it in the blender. Leave it on the lowest blender speed and just pour in some agave to taste. Check often as you drizzle agave in to make sure you do not over sweeten it. Once you get it just sweet enough (better for the sweetness level to be a little on shy side because the chai spice will alter the flavor). Ok, now slowly add some pumpkin pie spice or my "special recipe chai spice" while the blender is on its lowest speed setting. Keep adding in small quantities until you get the flavor you want. Do not forget the vanilla extract (or vanilla bean method) at the end. The instructions I have described in this paragraph allow you to alter the recipe to your own taste. The vanilla chai mylk recipe is just one of those recipes where it is hard for me to give the exact recipe amounts because each persons taste is different. My amounts are only as a guide line to get you started.

Here is another variation of a chai drink a person served at our last raw potluck.

Chai Frappe {from THE ORGANIC GARDEN RESTAURANT in Beverly,
Massachussets}:
1 cup filtered water
1/2 inch ginger
2 TBLS raw cashews
2 coconut date rolls
1 frozen banana
1 cup ice
cardamon, cinnamon,& nutmeg to taste { I put 7 shakes of cinn.& nutmeg
& 2 shakes of card.}
BLEND IT UP!!! {I used a vitamix}

I know this sounds gross, but oh well here goes...my son didn't finish his
breakfast of rawnola w/mac mylk this morning before school, so I did!
I wasn't about to throw it away as much as I paid for the macs...hope I am not shunned on the boards
for this, lol :o
I normally don't make mylk out of it, but saw a recipe in my new
uncookbook and thought that's what my boys needed since I had some
in the cupboard already... macs have high calories and fat...they are so thin,
and I am trying to put more meat on their bones. Our pediatrician
recommended adding Carnation or Pediasure to their diet to increase
their calories, but since I won't give them that, trying to think of fattening
healthy foods. So I thought of nut mylks with added coconut butter to them.
So far brazil nut mylk is their favorite and cheaper than macs.
Ya, I almost keeled over when they rang up the macs at Whole Foods.

Here is a picture of my raw vanilla chai ice cream shake with a cinnamon stick for garnish. I drank it through the cinnamon stick for an out of this world flavor.

there's definitely nothing wrong with eating someone elses food, especially since it was your own son and the food was so expensive. to throw it out would be so wasteful, i would be living with regret for the rest of the day if i did it :)

I have to say... this is GREAT! My daughter and I used to like Tastefully Simple's Chai Tea, and this is at least as good! I'm going to serve this at Thanksgiving. Besides my daily smoothie, I used to only drink water, but I'm definetly going to keep a pitcher of this in the fridge :D

I just made a Carob Chai Ice Cream Shake using carob in place of the vanilla. I strained the mixture and froze 3/4 of it and left the rest as chilled liquid. Then I put the chai cubes in the blender, added the liquid chai and blended. A nice frosty carob chai shake was the result.

ok i cannot say thankyou enough. This was one of the things i was going to definitly be missing on those cold winter mornings. (i used to drink the hot monks chi like it was going out of style) but now just a slightly warm cup should save my day. :) way too kewl thx a ton Jen

I went to Jubb's Longevity and had the most awesome cup of chai. It was warm but not hot hot. It was warm enough that it made the walk over in the freezing breeze worth it. It's better than any chai from Starbucks. I can't wait to make the chai almond mylk myself.

Just wondering if allspice would also work in this? I want to make this tomorrow and don't have all the spices you mentioned on hand (i.e. don't have clove...). I would think it would, but thought I'd ask first to see if any of you have used this...

Yes, you can use Allspice as a substitute for Cloves. Another option is to go to the grocery store and buy Pumpkin Pie Spice. I have used Frontier Pumpkin Pie Spice. It is the only one I know that is not heated past enzyme destroying temps. However, you use such small amounts, if you use a little McCormick (spelling?) brand Pumpkin Pie Spice, I wouldn't see any harm in that. The main thing is to make sure the spice has not been irridated (spelling?).

Thanks Samuel - I think that for now I will just substitute the allspice. I'm too lazy to go to the grocery store tomorrow! :)

And thanks RawFoodieMom on the cat. He's Pixel, and we've had him for over a year now. He's great, although he loves to get into trouble!

I was doing raw for 3 days, without benefit of any of the Allassa products , (receipe books etc.), have ordered just not recieved yet. I am a coffee addict and chocolate addict. Yesterday our cat of 12 years had to be put down, his chest was filled with water and he literally was drowning to death. I went back to coffee, pizza, fried calamarie, after a day full of grief and stress for the kids, pets and us. This morning I am back to treating my body with a fresh and raw fruit smoothie. My heart is broken yet I look forward to being heathier and stronger and hope to continue to read recipes that help a body and soul to enjoy life both the good and the sad.

I am so sorry to hear about your beloved cat; I had to put my previous cat
down at 12 years for liver problems and I was so heart broken too....
I grieved for a long time. It's so easy to turn to foods for comfort...
I am glad to see you going back to raw foods. It will help with depression
and clearing your head and body....cooked lifeless food just fuels the
depression from my experience. I've done this many times!
There are some wonderful raw recipes on this site that are tried and true.
This recipe for starters is great and soothing. The chili recipe and onion
bread always gets raves (do a search with the banana icon). And look for
some great desserts to get you thru the chocolate cravings (fudge balls,
etc....). Also don't forget to eat lots of greens (helps with depression).
Again, I am so sorry for your lost.

Thank you, before reading your kind note I just finished drinking a cucumber/spinach/carrot/celery juice. I know it can only help. I plan on taking the dogs for a walk also before it gets much later. How do you use a banana to search for desserts???

The menu that stretches across the top of this site has icons for each function. Below the picture of the banana is the Search function. While you can certainly use a banana as a dessert, it would be hard to use one to find desserts, I agree. :D Of course, the easiest way to find desserts is to just open Alissa's book to that section; they are sooo incredibly easy to make and satisfying that you'll likely find your cravings completely satisfied.

I have been focused on the orange/home didn't notice the banana. That's what happens when your computer is used by 4 people and it is like a musical chair to get to use it. I guess once I get my copy of alissa's book and dvd a lot will be clear to eating raw. If not I'll be asking "Well Duh!" questions on this site. :)

Wow. I have to say that I am very impressed by this drink. It tastes very much like the "real" thing! I have a vitamix so I let it go for a while longer to make it warm up a tiny bit, plus to add a bit more froth. It is great.

Also I did only 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon, and I added agave nectar at the end. I would probably also do a little less nutmeg, as that is a strong spice for me. Oh and the allspice works well in this.

Overall I am very very impressed - Samuel did you make this one up yourself? If so - congrats on a recipe well done! :)

I have had the same experience with the price of macs (at Whole Foods too). In fact, they are so expensive that some Health Food stores don't even stock them. Did I despair? Nooooo! I looked on ebay and what do you know, they sell raw unsalted macs for about $9 per pound. A LOT cheaper than locally. So I just order them, pay about the same amount for shipping, which still makes them cheaper for me here in Toronto.
Just a hint.
