I was at our local Central Market about 6 weeks ago and saw these adorable little winter lettuce plants. So I thought why not bring them home and see what happens!
Well they are growing very well and we are having temperatures into the mid-30's at night. I've attached photos I took just a few days ago and I am so impressed that now I wished I'd bought more plants. They had romaine and red leaf.
Does anyone know about what other winter plants can be grown in this area or any area actually in the winter when the temperatures so get cold at night?
I am so excited, lovely fresh lettuce from the garden this time of year is just such a treat!

I have to run now, but for a quick/temporary answer, there are lots of frost tolerant plants, and ways to extend the season.
In general the more endivey types of lettuce, most radicchios, and some others (one I like is rouge d'hiver, translation red of winter)...
Also pea shoots are frost tolerant, so are barley and wheatgrass. I love having the pea shoots as we head into winter, STRONGLY recommend them. Just find a source for the peas (dried raw), put them densely in a patch, and clip the shoots when they're the right height, say 4" tall.
Kale. Leeks. rapini/broccoli to an extent. lots of herbs.
You can also keep stuff in the ground, put something like a straw bale over it, or just some light mulch in a milder area, and dig it out into winter, stuff like beets, carrots, etc.. the ground won't be frozen a little ways under.
Some stuff like Kale actually tastes better after some frost.

Collard greens taste awesome after being frostbit. They are nearly sweet then. YUM!

Cinnamon,
Your lettuce are so lovely. I wish I had a garden. that must be the best
feeling to eat something from your own garden:)
.
I bet Rawpriestess has some suggestions for you
with her extensive gardens up their in the North Pacific.

Thank you everyone for the ideas and comments! I am thinking the hardy greens would be a wonderful choice... I'll see what I can find at our local nursery. Thank you again!

you can grow mustard greens, skunk cabbage, wild mountain celery, deer lettuce, dandelion greens, etc, all through the winter in the Pacific Northwest.
Also, cat tail shoots, and many herbs will grow thorughout the winter in this area.
rosemary, sage, parsley, aruguala, hyssop, mint will grow a few more weeks, but will die out when we have one week in a row of frosty nights, but comes back super hardy in the spring.

I cut an article from a newspaper a few years ago which described how to grow lettuce indoors in a grobag but I seem to have lost it. I do not have a garden but do intend to grow lettuce this winter. I will plant it in pots. I have lots of indoor plants, why should they not be edible. I am wasting my resources.
