View Full Version : Satiety of RAW vs. SAD ice cream

I have often eaten a pint of SAD ice cream. I wonder why now I can't eat half as much of RAW ice cream. I think it tastes every bit as good as the SAD version, yet I get filled up sooooooo much faster. My eyes were certainly bigger than my stomach tonight when I made a big batch of strawberry ice cream and a few teaspoons later I was full!
Also, have you ever noticed that RAW ice cream is so much prettier looking than artificially colored SAD ice cream? My strawberry I.C. is the prettiest soft pink with all those strawberry speckles.

Raw ice cream has so much more substance and is much more dense. SAD ice cream is more like frozen flavored whip cream. It has basically zero roughage accept for the occasional piece of fruit or nut. I think this is why you can eat so much SAD ice cream and so little of the raw.
Also, I think it has to do with the fact you have to prepare raw ice cream. I know that after I get done making my Mock Tuna, that I eat only a few bites. However, before I started to make the recipe, I remember being so hungry. Now if I get up the next day and all I have to do is reach in the fridge and eat it, I eat more that way.

Hi Autumn,
I have never tried raw ice cream (don't have the right equipment yet). But I have tried many raw desserts/treats, and I have experienced the same thing. In fact, I had an interesting experience last night. To preface this, I am not 100% raw, and so I do eat some cooked food, although ALWAYS vegan. I baked some gluten-free vegan cookies yesterday (I am gluten intolerant). While preparing the dough, I sampled some of the dough, and after they were baked I had 2 cookies. Then, after my raw salad dinner, I had 2 more. Then, believe it or not, while cleaning up the kitchen I had 1 more! After all those cookies, 5 total for the day, I felt kind of sick, yet my mind was telling me I wanted more! I didn't have any more, but I thought it was interesting how my mind wanted more, but my body clearly had had enough.
I never seem to have the urge to eat more than a reasonable portion of raw goodies, yet whenever I indulge in cooked/baked treats, I seem to most of the time want to keep eating. Part of it could be the addictiveness of refined flours/sugars, and the fact that these are not nourishing to the body, but they are stimulating. I noticed how very different I feel when consuming a raw dessert vs. a cooked one. I feel such a sense of calm and delicious bliss when eating a raw yummy, but when I eat a cooked one, it's almost like it's a drug that been injected right into my bloodstream! And not a relaxing one! I can immediately feel my heart starting to race, and I can't seem to concentrate on anything except what I am eating.
Anyway, I don't know if any of this fits for you. But I have been thinking about this since last night, and your post brought it up for me again.
Thanks for posting this topic,
Christine

DITTO !!! I also do not have a the processor to make the Ice Cream. There is a Raw Restaurant in NYC that makes it & will ship it to you on dry ice next day delivery in NYState. I am sure it is $$$ but worth it for a once in a blue moon treat. I am thinking at Xmas.

I don't have a food processor yet either. What I do is put fruit in the freezer for an hour or so to just where it's starting to freeze then I put it in the blender and then I put it back in the freezer to freeze. Works pretty good.

This is why SAD eaters over eat. Your body sees that there is food infront of you and it want's (vitamins/minerals) what it knows (from sight/smell) is in it. But when your eating SAD food your body does not receive the nutrition it is expecting, so you want more, and more and... are never nutritionally satisfied.
On the other hand ... raw foods have ALL the vital nutrition that your body needs, expects and receives. What a concept ! :p

I know when I used to order SAD food from Philadelphia to be shipped to Alabama, it cost $32 for the shipping alone.
I bought my food processor for $55. Soooo, depending on how much this restaurant charges, you may be able to just add a few dollars, get the processor and make your own any time your little heart desires! :D

Absolutely. Sometimes when eating SAD in the past, I would almost watch myself, like being outside of my own body, eating more and more and more, and not being able to stop. It most certainly is like a drug.

Good Point. I saw a Cuisinart for 100.0 (lower level model)...a few on ebay...but I needed to find out which would work best at a reasonable price.
Which did you buy ?

I have a Hamilton Beach Big Mouth 14 cup. It has big rubber suction cups on the bottom so it doesn't jump much at all, no matter what you put into it.

I notice the same thing with the raw fudge from Alissa's book. I could barely finish licking my fingers which got VERY sticky. If this were the sugar/butter/chocolate variety, I'd have to make a double batch just so I had "enough" for myself. My children happily ate a couple of pieces each.

I'm a cheapskate. I kept watching the local thrift stores until I found a food processor and a blender. I ended up getting a workhorse older Oster blender for 2.50 and an older food processor for 2.00. I figured at least they would get me through until I could afford something else and they have so far! I'm sure they aren't the BEST, but they are certainly working fine for me. I still check in regularly to the thrift stores in case I find something better. I spent my money on Alissa's book and dvd instead!
So, maybe making your own ice cream isn't that far out of reach...

Bretta,
Great going!! I am always checking out thrift stores and flea markets as well, but I was afraid of buying an appliance because I thought I'd bring it home and it wouldn't work. I sure have found plenty of other things there-so much that hubby tries to keep me out of them. :D

I'm new to this. What's SAD stand for? I know it's cooked food but what do the exact stickers stand for? Also, I live in Philly so what restaraunt was that that shipped?
Thank You,

I got the $10 Walmart special, no brand, food processor and it has been working fine for me since April. I am going to have to get a new one for Christmas though as this one is beginning to show my abuse and has a crack in the plastic where the blade is attached.

1-icurn,
SAD stands for standard American diet and the restaurant from Philly was a cheesteak place (before I became raw). There are no cheesteaks (nor hoagies, cream soda, peanut chews, soft pretzels or Jewish delis) in Alabama, so I used to order the food to be shipped ocassionally from Philly (or relatives would send some to me as gifts). However, now that I'm raw, I realize how awful I felt eating those things and don't miss them at all!! :D
