I just ran across this on the Eden Organic foods website and thought I'd pass it on since
I didn't know of any other raw vinegars except the apple cider, so was
excited to find another one :D

That is a great, I really was not liking the apple cider vinegar. The only problem is it is wine based vinegar and I am very strict not to consume any alcohol or aspirin or anything of that nature. I don't know what to do here. I definitely could use it in recipes.

Samuel, I don't consume alcohol either. When something "vinegary" is called for, I often just squeeze lemons or limes. The one time I'd used alcohol was with the raw apple cider vinegar in a recipe or two, but I stopped buying that.

I use to love red wine vinegarette before raw (I was buying pre bottled salad dressings then) so this really appeals to me. I even use a little balsamic vinegar to whip up QUICK salad dressings now(NOT raw) so this will be so cool to have on hand for me and work in my lifestyle.
If avoiding any wine products, than I agree with the citrus recommendation.
I think what your really looking for is the acidity of vinegar or citrus in these recipes.
I made an excellant dressing yesterday with some fresh grapefruit juice, key lime juice, Himalayan sea salt, raw honey and cold pressed Macadamian Nut oil. It was soooo delicous and NO vinegar.

Samuel, I don't have time to look into it, but maybe you could check... does red wine vinegar actually have any alcohol in it, or is it all dissipated by the time it's vinegar. I know when you cook with wine (not that we'd be doing that ;) ) all the alcohol is burned off. Maybe it is released by the time it's vinegar?

Good point Exurb. I don't think there is any alcohol in it anymore, but one could write/email the company to verify.
Here's a blob from the web-site about the vinegar:

Red Wine Vinegar

Red Wine VinegarEDEN Red Wine Vinegar is made with patience. After the primary fermentation changing grapes into wine, a secondary fermentation uses oxygen to activate the acetobacter present in wine that changes the alcohol into acetic acid. This natural process takes about 100 hours until the acidity is at five percent. We never speed up fermentation with additives and never add sulfating agents. When fermentation is completed the vinegar is bottled in amber glass to protect its flavor and nutritional integrity. Perfect for salad dressings, marinades and for pickling.

EDEN Red Wine Vinegar contains 'mother' of vinegar, appearing as cloudiness in the final product. Its presence indicates raw unpasteurized vinegar, a traditional health food. Mother is actually cellulose produced by the harmless vinegar bacteria. Most manufacturers pasteurize vinegar to prevent these bacteria from forming mother while sitting on the grocery store shelf. This needless cosmetic practice kills the bacteria and denatures vinegar's health qualities.

'Vinaigre' in French means sour wine, reflecting the ancient discovery that a cask of wine gone past its time had turned to a wonderful new product. Vinegar has provided good health and zest to people for over 7,000 years. Rich in organic acids, raw natural vinegar has been shown to counteract the effects of lactic acid build up in the blood that contributes to fatigue, irritability, and stiff, sore muscles. Hundreds of folk remedies call on vinegar for its soothing and antiseptic properties, from easing a bee sting to calming a sore throat.

Most commercial vinegars are highly denatured through the use of extreme heat and chemical solvents. Most wine vinegar contains sulfating agents. They are formulated rather than fermented and are not fit for human consumption although they make a fine window cleaner. For the flavor and benefit of true vinegar choose EDEN.

I doubt it has any substantial alcohol in it, I just am real strict about this kind of stuff. I mean yesterday after working late in my office, I got a headache. It was a bad one, but I refused to take aspirin. I just dealt with it until the pain passed. I am the same way with wine and I know the bible makes reference to Jesus drinking wine. I feel that if I give an inch, I will lose a mile. I even ordered the frontier vanilla extract just because it was the only one I could find that was alcohol free.

If someone can convince me that I am not some great sinner for using red wine vinegar in my recipes, then maybe I will do it. I currently use lemon or lime now, but would like the taste of real vinegar.

Samuel,
I respect your convictions, as I do not take medicine or drink alcohol either. And I completely understand "if I give an inch, I will lose a mile." If you chose not to use red wine vinegar based on that, that is fine.

However, please don't deprive yourself of using it because you think you're "some great sinner" if you do. You are a very gentle, loving and giving soul. You share all your recipes with us, and your enthusiasm about them, and even when you go back and tweak them just a bit, you make sure you update us all about that too. You gave away all your raw agave to your friends. It seems like you're running a raw cafe/hotel at your home, making raw food for your friends and family in your attempt to convert these people to raw, or at least for them to get a taste of how great it is. We all know that a lot of fancy raw recipes can be pricey, yet you seem to spare no expense when making these fantastic menus for your friends. You treat everyone with respect and kindness and are a pleasure on the board. So have some red wine vinegar if you want. I promise you God won't mind. :)

Autumn, you have tempted me with red wine vinegar? You must be a sith lord. Only sith lords use red wine vinegar. Autum, I ask that you turn away from the red wine vinegar because I know there is still good in you.

What is a sith lord? It better be good, after all the nice things I said about you. :p

Autumn, a Sith Lord is a lord of the dark side. I was quoting some lines from Star Wars III. I just finished recording the DVD movie onto an SD card for my palm pilot. It was on my mind when I replied to you.

I've picked up this red wine vinegar at my local Wild Oats...I haven't used it yet because I haven't finished using my raw apple cider vinegar. My convictions aren't yet quite as strong as Samuel's. (they will be one day :-)

For those interested in using this, check your local health food store, you should be able to get it there and not have to order it.

I'm really strict about this also. I have been for a long time. I would check a label and if it said alcohol on the label I wouldn't buy it. I've never been a red wine vinegar user, but I know I still have a lot of learning to do when it comes to eating raw.

I **am** the Sith Lord tempting everyone with the red wine vinegar!

;)  :D

I just picked up some at Whole Foods today (cheap too) and it
doesn't say it contains any alcohol. If in doubt and concerned contact the company.

I really didn't mean for this thread to bring up people's personal convictions
or religous views with alcohol use. I respect everyone's choices, but the thread was really intended for those to be informed that it was available and that's it.
I didn't know it was such a HOT topic
Now all red wines do contain natural sulfates that happen naturally.
Some people are sensitive to these and get headaches.
Use your intuition on what's right with you.
As for me I have no guilt using it.

Peace, Love, and Cheers
to red wine vinegar. :)

Punky, then Obi-Wan was right about you. You killed younglings and you use red wine vinegar in your raw food recipes. :)

Punky, I am glad you let us know about this. I went ahead an ordered some from Eden. However, I have not joined the dark side.

Okay, got an email back from Eden foods, i asked them for the alcohol content in their raw red wine vinegar...here's their response:

Dear Ursula,

Thank you for contacting Eden Foods and your interest in Eden products.

In the process of making any fruit vinegar, fruit sugars convert to
alcohol that convert to acetic acid (vinegar). The residual alcohol
in Red Wine Vinegar is .5% maximum by volume. The residual alcohol in
Apple Cider Vinegar is also .5% maximum by volume.

If you should have any further questions, please contact Customer
Service.

WOW, there is alcohol content in Apple Cider Vinegar???? You think they'd have to put that on the bottle! 0.5 percent doesn't bother me personally, I don't see myself giving up all vinegar over 0.5 percent, but it is still something that I think a consumer has the right to know when they buy a product!
