I was inspired by SamuelWilson and decided to make some hot stuff! I've always loved jalapeno poppers so I wanted to make a raw version, so here it is...sorry...no pics.

one recipe Avocado Mayo (courtesy of www.living-foods.com)
1 cup pine nuts
1 large avocado
1 tbs. lemon juice
2 tbs. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. Celtic sea salt
6 medium pitted dates (3 packed tbs.) (I didn't use these though)
1/2 clove garlic

cut the tops off jalepeno and scoop out seeds (I found cutting a slit down the side of the jalepeno makes this and filling easier.

next take avo mayo and fill jalepeno's

dehydrate @105 for approx 5hrs or until somewhat soft.

I used about half the avo may recipe with about 8 jalapeno's

These are great! especially if you like spicy stuff. I didn't use dates in the may recipe because first I forgot and then when I tasted it w/o them I liked it so much I decided not to add them...I don't care much for dates anyway.

Hope you guys enjoy!

What a great idea! I will definitely give these a go. I bet you could even bread them with ground flax so they'd be a little crispy on the outside, just like the real thing.

I was also thinking these would be GREAT filled with a nacho cheese type filling. I know I have seen such recipes before. I will have to look in Alissa's book when I get home. But does anyone know of a good-tasting nacho cheese recipe?

Wow, this recipe is GREAT! I stopped by the store and picked up jalepenos on the way home and whipped this recipe up - quick and easy, I like those!

I sat down and deseeded my jalepenos, which were quite large, but very pretty! By the time I was finished my hands were in FIRE!!! Oh well, rinsed in cold water and rubbed some baking soda on them to neutralize the burn! LOL Well, I have my jalepeno poppers in the dehydrator now... a few hours left. I did just snitch one out to test it  and they are GREAT. My jalepenos are very, very spicy, but that is nice, I won't have to worry about any one else eating them! I am going to try to find some sweet peppers too (or mild peppers) and make this recipe again for my wimpier friends and family to try!

RawMedic - this recipe really rawks! Thanks for sharing!!!

LOL, the "real" ones resulted in one of my last downfalls... I'll have to give these a try!!!

But, KRISTA, these ARE the real ones. Real ingredients, un-denatured, and no rancid oils. ;)

I still need to switch my own thinking when it comes to the difference between an FF ( fast food ) recipe and the REAL THING. I think I've had a problem with that in the past ( my own thing, I'm sure ). Too backwards. The REAL THING.. isn't COKE. It's WATER. :)

LOL@ Ursula... so creative! I totally get you, Krista... when coming out of Wal-Mart ( hmm.. think I can make a case to dh not to shop there but in a _have to or die_ situation? )... and full of fresh fruits and veggies in the bags, you are assaulted by the smells of 4 or more restaurants...one of which is Sonic. Last month my husband sort of offered to jaunt across the street with me and get some.
We talked ourselves out of it and instead I broke into the cherry tomatoes. I ate almost the entire large container by the time we arrived home. I felt so wonderful from the fresh fruit, that my mind was off of the bad.

Now, restaurant salads have proven difficult...

LOL@ Teri.... ouch

I thought I would share my pics of my pesto mushrooms and jalepeno poppers that I made last night. My ony 'boo boo' was falling asleep with them still in the dehydrator. Thankfully the temp was soo low and they turned out great (mushrroms are just a bit softer than normal, but taste great) and are sooo yummy! For those jalepeno popper lovers out there... these taste better than the real thing!

yay! I'm so happy you guys like the idea, and those of you that have already made and tried them, thanks! I may turn into Samuel's shadow  making up recipes for the masses! lol

I also was thinking that some flax cracker batter or some other type of raw bread would make a great "outside" to the popper, to make it a bit closer to the SAD version.

Glad it was a hit!

I have to share a "funny" about my popper making experience. I got the prettiest jalepenos and seeded them and such, but, like I said before my hands were on FIRE because they were so hot. Well, today all of a sudden my fingertips started burning again a lot and I could not figure out why! Apparently I touched the telephone with the juice on my fingers and it got back on them today! It gave me a good laugh when I figured out what the burning was from!!! Make sure you don't touch anything with jalepeno juice on your fingers!

maybe I should add a disclaimer on this recipe...lol

...Make sure you don't touch anything with jalepeno juice on your fingers!

LOL, now you tell me!!! I did wash my hands after cutting the peppers, but they're still burning... then my eye itched, so, yes, oh-so intelligent me, I stuck my finger in my eye!

Luckily that subsided rather quickly, but my fingers are still burning :(

Can't wait to try the poppers though, they're still in the dehydrator.

Oh Kmik! I thought I was the only "blonde" one! LOL Yes, the burning does subside.. and rubbing a bit of baking soda on my hands helped! OH LORD, am I glad I did not touch my eyes! woo hoo... oh well, they are well worth the burn! :D

Okay, I found jalepenos. Truly, they're not something I normally buy because of the HOT'Ness Factor, but.... I've been Sameul Wilson Training for about 5 days now...and I think I can hang ....

....hopefully not out of a window..

He did WHAT?? Oh dear... that's scary. LOL

I'll give it the Ol'e College Try in a few minutes.

I know everyone here will want to try them. I know there's 'posta be a trick that pulls the capsasin out...or nuetralizes it, anyway. I just can't remember what that is besides high-temp heating.

Warm water?... I was thinking of submerging these in a warm water bath...

My mouth is watering.. lol

kmik
11-08-2005, 08:36 PM
OK, my hands are still burning a little... surprisingly enough, clapping helps them  They were burning while I was driving home from kickboxing, I started slapping my leg along with the music, and it started to feel better... so I started clapping (don't worry, I still had control of my car... with my knee  ) and they're still better. I wonder what my family will think when they hear clapping in the middle of the night, lol!

Anyway, the poppers rock... so far. I made 8, and ate three, they've been in the dehydrator for 7 hours and they're really not softening. It's almost bed time, so I'll have to decide if I should leave them in over-night or what... course that may not be an issue, cuz I want another one now!

But this is a GREAT recipe, thanks so much Ursula for posting it! I even love just the avocado mayo, I'll use that more for other things!

Oh, and Renee, after mine have been sitting in the dehydrator, I think they're getting less potent. The one I just ate hardly seemed spicey... to help you gauge - I'm a "moderately spicey" kind of person.

ReneeSC
11-08-2005, 08:55 PM
What a WIENIE I am - blalalalalala

LOL@ Krista. Uhmmm.. Hon... next time you start clapping whilst driving, use both knees. Remember.. 10 and 2 position. :D

My hands, after almost 3 hours, are finally not burning like hot oil was poured over them. I had a worse problem, though: I cleaned the peppers in lukewarm water. However, I increased the temp, and when I did, it released the capsasin directly into my bloodstream through my hands. I started feeling dizzy, and my heart began to race a bit. I'd totally forgot the _last_ time I'd O.D'd on capsasin.... ( a hurting back creme with capsasin as it's main ingredient )... I sat on the floor for like an hour trying to gain my breath again.

This wasn't near as bad, but.. man, that was DUMB creating open pores so the oil could penetrate. SCORE ONE FOR RENEE!

I didn't have avos; I had no idea I was out, so I made up my own NOT YO' CHEEZE ( turned out a nicely-colored red/orange like cheddar ). I filled all peppers ( almost an entire tray )...and I've eaten two so far. The first was FAB.. OH FAB. The second burned like hot tea.

HOWEVER...all of this being said.... THEY'RE REALLY GOOD! Methinks.. too good, because even after almost hospitalization.. I still want 'em!!!

If I ever do this recipe again, and I probably will, I'll use GLOVES while prepping. I must be allergic to the oil. Why can I eat it, though? Weird.

I made these up today and I snuck one before it was dehydrated.

It was so good. A little hot at first, but not too bad.

I added dates to mine though, so maybe it cut down on the hotness factor.

Oh, also I added oil to my hands and my hands did not burn from the jalapenos!

They are so good.

And the mixture that goes in it is wonderful as well.

I ate the rest in 2 stick of celery.

Yum, I have my appetizer tray for Thanksgiving all figured out! :D

Raw_Medic

Is everyone's jalapeno's really really hot?

I only get hot spots when I've left a few seeds in there.

So, next time I make these (and I will make them again for sure), I am going to keep some seeds in there to help with the hotness factor.

I love these. Thanks for inventing this recipe!

I was hoping for really spicy and it's moderate.

Maybe it's my jalapeno's that we have here.

But, I love them. I have eaten 2.5 of them. One before it was done and 1.5 when they were warm and 1/2 done.

I can't wait until the 5 hours is up. I am going to save some for dh to try though! :)

Raw_Medic
11-09-2005, 02:31 PM
5 hours was my gestimated time, Pam, and I noticed that mine were hotter down near the end. I definitely think if you leave some seeds in it will make it hotter...you could always use habenero's if it's not hot enough for you! (disclaimer: for those of you who may not know what a habenero pepper is...this is a huge joke and if you made these with habenero's you would hunt me down and kill me, and then your mouth would still be on fire!)

maybe throw some seeds in the mayo too.

I'm so happy these were such a hit! You guys have made my week :-)

vegggeeemom
11-09-2005, 02:41 PM
Oh, great idea about putting some seeds in the mayo.

Ugh, why can't I just think of simple alternatives like that?!

Will be making these again very soon.

I was craving something hot and crunchy and when they are 1/2 way done they are very crunchy and warm. Just hit the spot for me.

Now, I need to stay out of the dehydrator until they are done.

These will be going to ANY event that I have coming up. Baby shower, church Christmas Party, just going to a friends house. Any place that I can take food.

Some day I'll be inventive.

RM, I do have to tell you this, I posted in my journal a little bit about this, but I had been feeling kinda just blah doing raw.. I was eating only fruits, very little veggies and salad.

Well, Rawadventures (Teri) told me how good these were and I was going to hold off on making them.

But, went last night to get the stuff.

When I tried that mixture it hit the spot for me.

I had not really been excited about the raw journey, just kinda here and reading and not posting much and just doing the motions with no emotion behind it.

As strange as it may sound, I feel this little recipe brought back some "fire"---yes pun intended! LOL

But, really, I feel so alive and excited again about the raw journey and am just so thrilled that some day I'll invent a recipe that was this big of a hit! LOL

Thanks again. Not only for the recipe, but for the excitement makeover that I have been given! :)

Okay, I too have some of these Jalapeno Poppers dehydrating at the moment.

After reading about jalapeno burns, I still disregarded any precautionery measures and yanked out the seeds barehanded. Then, the urge came for me to urinate and I did so before I remembered what the heck I was doing...
[I'm a guy...]

So, up to the tub I went with some skim milk (wife eats SAD) and was careful to pour this on me to relieve the burn. Here's a picture of my hand. Obviously, I didn't supply a picture of the other burn area.

On a positive note, the Avo Mayo was absolutely delicious. Even my wife loves it!!! Thanks so much for posting this recipe. Next time, I'm wearing gloves!!!

Oh Fiddler, I'm so sorry. Similar thing happened to hubby and I when we first used Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile soap in the shower, lol.

Nice picture there. Yours and my hubby's hands are musclelorically similar. My hubby plays guitar. They say to drink milk to relieve mouth burn so it only makes sense to use it externally.

I'm going out to buy my jalepenos now too. Will wear my food handling gloves left over from my Pampered Chef days. I hope this will be a hit with hubby. Sometimes it takes quite a few tries before he really enjoys a raw recipe. I wonder what this would taste like breaded with the Fried Onion Rings breading?

Whoever else makes this, if you don't have problems when deseeding bare handed, please post.

I was not bothered by it AT ALL. But, I did put olive all over my hands first and that helped I guess.

Then washed my hands 3 times.

The stuff is so good. Dh ate 3 of them and wants more. So, he's going to stop at the store on the way home and get more stuff to make this wonderful treat!

Will be adding seeds to the mixture this time to make it hot! Yummy!

So so worth getting the ingriedents and trying this out.

Holy Guacamole I put on gloves and the fumes *still* got to me. I sneezed repeatedly, coughed and had a lot of irritation in my chest/eustasion tubes. I can't believe how powerful those tiny little seeds are.

Now I have to wonder, or question myself: "...so *why* are you about to put this thing inside your body?"

They're dehydrating now, which is where they'll stay, until they are thoroughly done.

Note to self: If you think you are too small to change the world, try inhaling the inside of a tiny jalepeno.

Ok, I take it back, I take it all back!! :)

Kmik - I am SO glad that I am not the only one who did this! I had mine for breakfast twice! (maybe they'll help burn some fat!! LOL)

By the way... in case anyone is interested, I picked up four poblano peppers yesterday when I got more jalepenos. I was curious of how they would taste. You know, they are the ones that the mexican restaurants use for chili rellenos. Anyway, I stuffed four of them last night and had to sample it for breakfast! :p They are great!!!! They are milder than the jalepenos, so if the thought of the jalepenos being too hot scares you, I would fully recommend this pepper!

What I found helped for working with hot peppers.

A) (now we know) wear a protective barrier - gloves, oil, whatever suits you.

b) if hot pepper juice gets on your hands, wash hands thoroughly with cold water. Cold water with a splash of vinegar helps dissipate the pepper juice and cools down the hands, soak in that. liberally apply aloe vera juice.

I did all of the above for myself, and it helped.

Ariannah
(I think I'll also try those poppers!)

C) Wear a gas mask

This morning I tried one, it was good. My hubby thought I was nuts to eat one first thing in the morning.

Wasn't too wild about it, and I think it was because I'm not a big fan of creamed up pine nuts, and prefer the taste of them whole in recipes. I think straight cashews might be more pallete friendly for me.

I'm thinking about breading them and sending them back to the dehydrator.

I tried this recipe the other night and also made the pesto stuffed mushrooms for dinner. Mushrooms were awsome--could be addicting, actually.
I wore gloves to clean the jalapenos and removed all seeds and varied the level of removing the ribs. Discovered after that the peppers that I left some ribs in were YOWZA! hot. The ones I removed were zero heat and rather disappointing. Anyway, I made the Nacho cheese filling instead of the avo mayo (didn't have a ripe avo) and dehydrated per instructions. The filling was awsome. Ate several peppers--half were hot; half were not. I used the last of the peppers tonight for dinner as a burrito rolled in a collard leaf. I cut up the cheese filled peppers on to the collard leaf, added tomato chunks, avocado, and cilantro. Yummy! I will definately use this wonderful recipe again. Thank you for creating the great recipe!

I'm not Renee, but the cheese filling I used was from Alissa's book--Nacho Cheese on page 319. I made a half recipe, which filled 12 jalapenos and two large halves of a Pasillo (sp?) chile. I cut the garlic back to one clove and just did a light squirt on the Bragg's and added a couple shakes of paprika. Followed the rest of the recipe. Is definately on my "make again and often" list.

Yikes, what a hard time I had breathing while seeding the peppers, even with gloves and under running water.

They're recently into the dehydrator, but I notice the filling is drying up, too. Has anyone tried dehydrating the jalapenos first, then adding the filling when they're done? I think I'll try it next time with some of them.

Very yummy though! :)

Hi Blessed.

I also made a version of Alissa's Nacho Cheese; which I call Not Yo' Cheeze.

I used dried red peppers ( not the hot kind, and not the red bell pepper sort, but another species I can't remember ). I think the other ingredients were basically the same. I also switch around seasonings according to how I want something to taste or what I have on hand. So... I wish I could be of more help to you on that one.

I've yet to make the avo-mayo.. but I have kids who love avos, so I should make it.

You and me both! My lungs hurt for quite a while. I was wearing gloves too. Kinda makes you wonder why the heck you'd even want to try to digest the things, exposing them to the inside membranes and all.

I tried the recipe and wasn't too keen on the filling. It was probably the pine nuts. I don't care for them creamed up, but I did have an awesome recipe with whole pine nuts, marinated portobellas, and sun dried tomatoes (in oil) all mixed in with some zuchinni angel hair. That was definately the bomb.

Yeah.. me, too!
I was SCARED by what they did to me. But, shortly thereafter, I was able to down Master Cleanse Lemonade with Cayenne without ANY problem. LOL
But, you know, even after DAYS of cleansing my hands, I could still rub my eye or nose and feel real PAIN. I must have gotten ahold of some peppers on acid or something.

I don't think I will use the jalepenos again, and it certainly nothing more than a totally personal choice at this point. I will look for different sorts of peppers since I like how the Nacho Cheese tasted in them... but.. to make sure the peppers aren't too hot for me, I had to dehydrate them at too high of a temperature; that sort of missed the point.. but.. it surely got me thinking!

I made these to take with me to my parents tommorrow for our thanksgiving dinner (I'm working at the Fire Dept today :-P) I'm pretty sure that no one else will want to eat them and that's fine by me :)

Sedona Sun,
My filling dries up a bit too...that's a good idea about dehydrating the pepper first and then stuffing it...and fyi for those who've not been able to get it as soft as they'd like, I dehydrated mine yesterday started them at 10pm and took them off this morning when I got up for work at 6am. They were pretty soft...but you might try spritzing them with some nama shoyu...or some other liquid...SamuelWilson suggested Alissa's vinegrette for the mushrooms in pesto mushrooms, and it made them so juicy...I wonder if it could do a similar job with jalapeno's. I'll try the jalapeno's this way soon and let you guys know!

WOW!! I just made them today and holy u know what!! are they good. They are HOT but really good. I like the dates because they take away some of the jalapeno heat. I did use gloves, thanks for the warning:) Great recipie:) Much appreciated, even my 12 year old likes them:)

OKAY:)
I ate them all in one day!! Incredible, thank you so much!! I did use the dates and they helped with the heat. The mayo also makes a great cole slaw dressing as well. :p

Im making these tonight for sure. Anyone have any suggestions on ways to tame the heat just a little? Like could you soak the peppers in something for a couple hours??? Would that help to soften them up a bit?

EEEEEeeeee cant wait!!!!!

I just planted a jalopenio plant so I can try these. I can't seem to find them in stores here in Australia!

What's the *best* filling for these? There are a couple of variations. Sounds like the nacho cheese one is favoured... is that true?

Cheers,
Sheryl

The one I did was the Avo-Mayo, which came out good. It was "ok" on its own, but has taken on a new, even yummier taste after being dehydrated. I want to do these again and start experimenting with the filling to see how they come out.

Also, next time Im going to use the onion ring breading thats floating around here with the jalapenos. Should be verrrrrrrrrry yum.

These are TOTALLY worth it. I just gave some to some of the people here in the office who are quite the opposite of raw and everyone was completely impressed. (as per usual!)

Holy moly!! I wish I'd found this thread before trying to make this!! I'd been given the recipe, and I've never handled jalapenos before ... I guess y'all can guess what's happened ... lol ...

Man oh man, are my fingers on fire or what?! It's been about three and a half hours. It's getting a bit better, but still pretty stingy. :( And I still need to get the fixings marinating for the lasagna that I'm taking to my parent's home tomorrow for Thanksgiving. I'd have done the poppers last if I'd known! I'd planned on surprising my dad with them, but guess the surprise was on me! lol ...

Hi! I really wanted to see rawadventure's picture of the poppers (page 1 of thread), but all I see is a box with a red X in it. I right clicked on it & went to "show picture," but still nothing happened. Any ideas? Maybe my computer or software is out of date? Thanks! Jen

That post was made over a year ago. The photo has probably been removed from its original location. I too was disappointed that I could not see the finished product. I like to have a point of reference when I make a new recipe. I'm still going to try this one though...it sounds too good to pass up!

I have never made these, but am making a grocery list, and if they turn out good I will take them to our women's ministry Christmas brunch on Saturday. I hope they are as good as everyone says they are. Something you may want to try is, I have a small utensil (I think it hulls strawberries) I cut down the middle of my jal. and then "hull" out the seeds. I did this when I was slicing the jal. to put in my salads...it really was quick and easy. I would like to find the "fried onion ring" recipe and figure out how to add that to the poppers....if anyone reads this and knows, I love to hear about that too.

Oh my gosh these are HOT!! I mean, barely able to eat them kind of hot. I put them in the dehydrator for 4 1/2 hours and then filled them, and just put them back in - since someone said the filling tends to dry out a bit. They were definitely getting soft & shriveled, and just a *teensy* bit less hot. But still very hot. I tried a small one, a tiny one that I could barely put any filling on the little sliver of shrunken pepper, and I had to chew really fast and gulp it down with ample filling in order to not burn up. Then I had a drink of water.

I hope they calm down a bit - I'll probably dehydrate them for another 2 hours and see how they are...they're not something I could just sit & casually eat, BUT they are definitely spicy hot, and I'm not one who is shy about eating hot things.

They seem pretty good though - I made the avo mayo but I think my pine nuts might be a little bit rancid, they tasted kind of funny to me & I've
had them for probably 6 months.

i have the jalapenos in the dehydrator... and i'm going to fill them with "da bomb cheese sauce" as that's my hubby's fav.

i'll let you all know how they turn out!

i made raw chile rellenos from Cafe gratitudes book, and they were awesome.
try this for "batter"
the key is totally drench them in batter & make sure it is really thick.
i made these about a year ago and they were crispy & soft in the inside.

1 cup mac nuts
1/2 cup coconut milk
1 t. chopped jalapeno(probally omit since the peppers you are using ARE japenos!)
1/2 t. chopped garlic
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t.cumin powder

process in blender until smooth. put in container deep enough for dipping.
then dehydtate!

thanks! i put the peppers in the dehydrator for two hours and they were... well... paper pencils. :( so i grabbed them and blended them into the "da bomb cheese sauce" and am serving them today with cut up veggies.

tastes just fine. how do you all keep your peppers looking like peppers???

I have a batch in the dehydrator right now. I was so excited to try these, but now I am afraid that the filling is going to taste too much like mayo for my liking.

I made the avocado mayo w/o the dates. I sampled it and it was like eating straight mayo. Hopefully it will change flavors while in the dehydrator. I now have about a cup of the mayo left that I am not exactly certain what to do with. I am thinking maybe I will add something sweet to it and use it in a waldorf salad.

I made these over the weekend and they were really good. I liked using the mayo on other things although it came out too sweet for me. Next time, I will use waaay less dates.
I used gloves as someone suggested, but my jalapenos were'nt that spicy :)

i've been making these like crazy... actually just finished some *wipes chin*

i've been stuffing them with da bomb cheese sauce... and added in a whole jalapeno to the cheese sauce... then stuffed the jalapenos and put them into the dehydrator for an hour.

really good!

i used sunflower seeds, cashews or almonds. all work equally well!

Wow, you totally speak my language. Jalapeno poppers used to be my #1 vice. Seriously, Jack and the Box never even saw me coming. I think I'm going to finally have to invest in a dehydrator because of this recipe.
