I have a Nordic Track that I exercise with a couple of times a week and an exercise ball.
What are you all doing?
Today is day #15 for me and I'm sticking with it WOW it's easier the second time around.

I use several different things because I like variety :)

Leslie Sansone's Walking Away the Pounds ( not a cake walk as it sounds )

Still in beginner's Pilates - ready to begin Romana's Pilates

Louise Solomon's Yoga-Pilates mixed

Tai Chi - just started yesterday.

Brisk walking when we can get out there... been on hiatus since foot surgery.

Lotte Berk NY - flab kickin' isometric dancer-like muscle building system. Oh... my muscles ( whhooo... you FEEL this one )

I'm still looking for other things I've yet to try. My youngest daughter, not the aerobic type, enjoyed Tai Chi with me yesterday.

T-Tap looked interesting!

sadly, exercise is a rare part of my life. I hate to exercise on purpose. I love to go for long (fast paced) walks and ride my bicycle around just to think and get "fresh" exhaust fumes, oops! I mean air - fresh air - but I don't go as often as I would like to cause my neighborhood isn't very pedestrian friendly. :( I probably/definitely do need more exercise even though I don't need to lose any weight and my energy is spring loaded. :p

My routine is similar to tglasco4's routine with the exception that my weightlifting days usually last 45'. I basically do what is taught in Click here - BodyForLife (http://bodyforlife.com/exercise/weighttraining.asp). Of course, I eat only RAW plant-based foods so obviously I do NOT subscribe to Bill Philips diet program.

I like this exercise routine because it varies from week to week. One week I do Upper Body twice and lower body once; the following week lower body is done twice and upper body once. So, on Monday after a hard upper body workout, I think to myself -- glad that's over until Friday :)

I do tend to run longer than 20' --- usually about 30 - 50 minutes.

Here's what I do:

kick box 2-3 times a week

What I do find interesting is how much all us raw vegans exercise. How ever do we have the energy??? Hmmm, maybe there's something to this ;)

I don't exercise. I've tried it, and I don't like it.

However, I love to run with my dog, and play catch and fetch, of course I do most of the catching and fetching.

I walk in the gardens every day, picking weeds, chatting with wild critters, picking fruits and veggies.

We build on our home, decks, docks, walls, we hoist huge rocks, and wheel barrows, dig dirt, and compost, we are very active in our yard and our remodeling.

We are always building, hauling in lumber, carpet, windows, french doors, moving furniture, etc.

We love to dance, and we often dance on our deck, just for fun.

and the best for last:

My hubby and I are very active together (and that takes a lot of energy) and is so much fun, and no need to buy a gym membership.

I love the outdoors, so I get as much of my exercising done outside. And since I personally don't like exercise either, right now my reasons for doing it are so I can be in top shape to enjoy things like hiking, kayaking, backpacking, and cross-country skiing. Getting up in the morning to push myself is not my idea of a great wake up call, but getting up in the morning to scale a mountain with a group of friends is exciting. It's all a mind game I know, but that's what I have to do. I also do resistance training. How will I be able to hoist myself up that cliff with a rope if I can't lift my own weight?

ReneeSC
11-04-2005, 09:14 AM
Resistance training - makes awesome muscles and you'll be surprised at how quickly it strengthens you're body and ability to finish tasks you previously just couldn't no matter what you tried.

I love resistance training. I do a lot of work with my own body weight...sans heavy equipment, and I've noticed faster results.
I'm still watching Romana's pilates, because they look hard  , but Tai Chi, while being very fluid, is actually a low impact resistance training.

My arms have ached after doing Tai Chi. :)

I LOVE MUSCLES

I'm a FIRM addict. ;) So I create rotations that are a mix of cardio, sculpting and cardio/sculpt working out 5-6 days a week. Actually, I'm turning into a rotation junky, as I've created a lot more rotations than I can use, because I keep finding or making up ones I like better.

I get up at 5:30 and do a short workout with hand weights, then I do the Lotte Berk dvd everyother day. On the off days I do just the dvd. They have 4 different dvd's (high round assets, basic essentials, hip hugger abs & muscle eats fat) so I route those also. Let me tell you when I get done I am shaky and weak. Which my husband says is a good thing. :)

Pushups, squats, lunges, pullups, crunches can all be done with bodyweight. If you are just starting I would do one or two sets of each only. Each of them can be looked up on the net so that you can be sure you are correct on the technique. Technique is the key to great development.

Peace.

golly! i don't think one of you mentioned rebounding. doesn't anyone like to jump on a trampoline? i want to get one for christmas.

Cardio bores me to tears....so

I do a hard 20 minute interval training program on my elliptical machine MWF and I lift weights (bench and dumbbells), alternating upper and lower body on TRSat, Sundays are for being lazy or doing things outside when it's nice. Right now in Ohio, it's 0 degrees and we're covered in snow and ice!

I also follow a 99% raw food diet (I add oil and vinegar to my diet).

I was out of it for awhile, because I'd get off late at night and wouldn't feel like going over to the gym plus I'd rather be outdoors walking, but it was already dark by the time I got home. However, I just got totally committed to exercising again (my 1st day back at the gym, I wondered why I had even let the gym thing slip up) So I do HIIT 3 x a week (I do HIIT for 15 minutes, slow down for 8 minutes, then do another bout for another 15 minutes - this feels soooooo good to me right now) and then with warm up and cool down, that makes it about an hour. Then I weight train 3x a week but for no more than 40 minutes. (it's usually about 35 minutes) And then I get in walking outside whenever I can and whenever possible. It's finally 40 degrees today so I might go do an hour walk outside today. I'd rather be outside than at the gym as I am an outside person, but if it's too cold, rainy or snowy, I'll stick to the gym. AT least now, I have my dh working out with me which makes it really fun! I'm just trying to get more toned before bathing suit season appraoches and what better time to start than now? (no need to worry about putting on weight since I don't eat junk anymore)

sorry.. messy keyboard... body weight exercises; they can be things such as push-ups, sit ups .. or ab-ups, and using your balance, finding your center of gravity....and slowly exercising one muscle group at a time while in balance .... oh.. that can do it for ya. lotte burke is good with this, too. there's a leg, hip, ab, glute exercise i used to do all of the time to get off baby weight; go into the kitchen step back from the counter about 18 inches facing the counter go up on your toes while you have your hands or fingers on the top of the counter for balance rotate your hips a bit forward on purpose and lift one leg out sideways as high as you can go without painful discomfort..and push up to the ceiling through your heel. push up... push up.. push up.. until a bit weakened and allow that leg to go to the floor as slowly as you can.... rest... and switch sides. do this until 'muscle failure'. remember to push your energy -not- through your joints.. but consciously push your energy out of the center of your body ...that being your belly..... through your muscles. visualize this as you're doing this exercise. What makes this exercise work is that you do not grip the counter - i got to the point where i could lean towards the counter and balance on one or two fingers. you want your bodily muscles to hold you up and in balance. it takes practice. staircase calves; again, using as little support as you can... go up on one step of the stairs. slide your feet back so that only the balls and toes are on the step..leaving your heels to hang off. practice going up on your toes and then slowly lowering your heels and then up..and back down. go slowly..... use your bodily muscles to balance. Chair Thighs; while stitting in a chair normally, place hands behind your head.... raise your legs to hip height... pull your knees into your chest.. and push back out through your heels.. do not put your feet on the floor until you absolutely have to. and then... raise legs back up to hip height... and while smooshly your knees together, lower your legs to the floor once through your toes and once through your heels over and over again. back, ab, and leg toner; get on the floor with your back on the surface. knees are up, shoulders pressed into the floor, arms are flat on the floor, palms down. raise up your buttocks as high off of the floor as you can get it while also raising one leg pushing through that heel into the ceiling. push up.. push up.. push up through your buttocks towards the celing in slow, but small movements. you don't want your rear to touch the floor at all. switch legs when one is tired. there are so many!! sorry.. dumb keyboard!

Hi, misslinda, :)

Well, I was supposed to have cut back :o ... I'm currently running about 6 days a week again. I find it *very* difficult to cut back; however, I do know the setbacks of overtraining only too well! I'm best at 4 or 5 days of running if I'm regularly doing another sport to fill in my excess energy gaps! I just have too much energy and need to get rid of it or I will literally be up all night! But, at the moment, I confess to having slipped back into too much. I'll be cutting either my distance or my days...both are difficult! I run about 10 miles at a time; this is probably the only time I've really limited myself.

A fellow addict I see ;)

What is your favorite running shoe? I'm curious since you seem to be a distance runner; is that correct? I like to change it up, and I'm due for one now. I could use some suggestions for a good distance shoe that's comfy and durable. I also need good stability.

Jaurequi: not an addict at all----just typical normal, compulsive, pain enduring runners as usual :p ;)

I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yes, i am working back into my running having been out on injury for 1 1/2 years. i too use to be 10-15 mi runner but i ran everyday without rest days.....i just had rest moments. :) i always rationlized......."well at least 'm not sitting and watching tv for an hour!"

Shoes are the hardenst part for me...............i spent the last 2 months looking. seems like either you pay alot for a great shoe or settle for cheap quality. the base on the average priced Nike is not very convincing to me. my feet tend to feel comfortable in Adidas response----shape,weight and comfort. i have a pair of nike airmax that i have run to the groundd but i've gotten the best mileage so far..........most marathon runners seem to be loyal to Asics but again, my feet have never done well in them. NB feels like foam and have no cushion to them although they make one of the best walking shoes---running shoe is not their forté. that's how i feel about the shoes out right now---'bout you?

Hi,

Interesting topic, it's fun to see what others are doing for body movement. I always tell people who say they hate exercise, to just find something they enjoy doing that moves their body. I have been exercising in many forms, regularly for about 18 years. At 42 I feel better than I ever did in my 20's. I am healthier, stronger, and more confident in my body.

The exercise I do on a regular basis nowadays includes: cardio, such as walking, hiking the mountains, aerobics classes, and cardio machines. Also weight training, using weight machines, and also free weights. On occasion I will use resistance bands, to add a little something different.

I have also dabbled in some other things over the years. I was very into bellydancing years ago, taking classes at least 3 times a week, and ballet, several times a week as well. I was also heavily into yoga years ago, practicing almost every day. I really have missed yoga, it was such a huge part of my life, and I guess situations came up where I just didn't have the time to do it, and before I knew it several years had passed by, and I hadn't taken a class. I have been on vacation from work this week (and next week, YEA!), and took a yoga class the other day at the gym. It felt so wonderful to be in that space again, although I could certainly feel how tight my muscles and tendons have become. I do still do some poses on my own, but nothing beats taking a guided class. I really miss bellydancing and ballet, too. I wish there were just more hours in the day to do all the things I love, but that is part of life, isn't it? In order to do one thing, usually something else must be sacrificed. That is the nature of choice.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading about everyone's exercise routines. Moving our bodies is SO important, not only for physical health, but for our emotional and spiritual health as well. Our bodies are built for movement, and I feel sad that so many people deny themselves this basic necessity and pleasure. I work with people in their early 20's, who are mostly concerned with smoking, drinking and partying, and it astounds me that I am 2 decades older than them, and in much better shape!

...not an addict at all----just typical normal, compulsive, pain enduring runners as usual :p ;) ...?

O_kay?! Lol! Don't I know it. We love the punishment -- you gotta :D If it doesn't hurt you ain't doin' it right.

I, too, would rationalize, "I'm young; I can handle it." "I know I'm overtraining ~and defeating the purpose! lol~, but I *need* to run!"

i was out on an injury too. I got back out there very soon, though. I was lucky I had a surgeon who was a runner :). He totally understood me. He recommended I do as much as I could as soon as possible to build my bones and the muscle around my bones (had a spinal injury). He was incredible. Anyway, I know how tough it is to sit out when you're an athlete; so I sympathize with you. I started out walking, then sped up gradually (slowly); and it helped because at least I was out there. Eventually, I did a slow trot, then jog, etc.; went to the gym to ride the bike occasionally.
Were you completely incapacitated or were you able to do some exercise?

Yes, I find choosing shoes an ordeal. I think my favorite overall brand is Saucony. Unfortunately, my favorite model of theirs was discontinued about 4 years ago. So I still experiment. Not a New Balance fan, eh? :) I have had good luck with them; I've gotten a lot of their shoes. I think the value of one shoe versus another is mostly individual; we all have different needs and body, feet structure. Nike is off my list; wouldn't touch them. All the shoes are pretty expensive, but I pay for the quality. I mean, what else can I do? lol. Anyway, I'd rather save my feet than a few bucks if that's the way it has to be. I can't afford to damage my joints.
I think I've only tried Asics once...I think I'll check them out again and look at Adidas too -- do they have good synthetics? Originally, I bought synthetics because I'm vegan; but realize I prefer them anyway -- they perform better and longer.
Do you buy running socks? I love the double layer socks by WRIGHTSOCKS (http://www.tworoadsfitness.com/wrightrunning.html)
They are not bulky but keep the blisters at bay. They have an even thinner one there that I like for summer.

Thanks! Oh, and here is a good guide: CHOOSE YOUR SHOE (http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=481).
THese guides always help, but I always find myself saying, "Yea, but..." ;) I'm more of a "normal" foot, but find characteristics in the other shoes desirable too!

AWWWWWWWwww i'm sorry, I hate NB  I realy like those new $300 Adidas :D but i know i will be settling for some average........I go thru my shoes so fast that financially i'll settle for something in the 80-120 range. Yeah, I really think Nike is losing the purpose of their shoes. Ona serious notte though, I really want to see how my feet change thru raw......have you noticed a change in feel of your feet when running or needing less cushioning???

I think I've only tried Asics once...I think I'll check them out again and look at Adidas too -- do they have good synthetics? Originally, I bought synthetics because I'm vegan; but realize I prefer them anyway -- they perform better and longer.

It kills me all maranthon runners I have ever seen or talke to, wear Asics...........i'm beginning to think I have a foot/body problem. Hmmm. Honestly, I've never paid attention to "Synthetics" I just buy what feels and repsonds well to my running. I really cannot answer that question for you.

Some of the shoes in the $80-$100 range are good quality; and many times you can find the $150 shoes on sale for $70 or $80. I know it's expensive for the high-end shoes, but it's important to protect your tootsies! Not all the expensive ones are good, though price isn't always an indicator of quality!

I've only had foot pain issues recently -- got a bad pair of N.B. LOL! that'll teach me ;); but it's nothing permanent or too serious. Nothing before that except an occasional pulled muscle in the foot (isn't that a nightmare?!)
I did however, have ugly runners' toes! My nails were disgusting and bumpy, I always had missing nails, as they would come right off. I knew this had to be a dietary issue as well as overtraining; it took me a while to really get myself eating properly to heal them. They really, really, really have improved. They are mostly smooth and healthy looking; no missing nails (couldn't wear sandals!); no purple, red, and black nails! I attribute it mostly to my green smoothies -- my consumption of greens was the "missing link" as I've said here many times before, to reaching my penultimate eating plan. They absolutely balanced me. I was eating well, but was still out of balance; the smoothies were the answer. :)
I still need good support from my shoes; nothing about comfort has changed since cleaning up my diet.

I'm in my thirties; I've been running for about 17 years now...

The WrightSocks are great; very comfy.

theresann, that's pretty funny about the videos; I'm the same way -- I just can't do them! It's just too boring. I have to go do something. I often think I should start setting up my own home gym, but then wonder if I'll even use it!

Jaurequi, that's baffles me, i have never had a fracture, pulled muscle, sprang or anything to my foot. I did have caluses and occssional stinky feet! :D

Running 3x per week
Weights 3x per week(no more than 30 minutes a session)
One day off per week.
Tod, I'm getting back into the weights. Do you keep your weight training to 30 minutes a session to avoid overtraining? What do you eat or drink after your workout?

I bicycle to work--20 minutes to and from. Planning on doing more swimming, possibly running.

I learned long ago the key to maintaining my fitness committment is doing activities I genuinely enjoy. I used to think people on treadmills looked hilarious, so I took up walking ... then power-walking ... then race-walking ... then jogging ... and now I run. As my body grew stronger and the weight came off, my motivation increased by leaps and bounds. 4x a week I run the 30 minute trip from my house to the local Y ... there I swim laps for 20 minutes, then my water aerobics class is 45 minutes ... after class, I run the 30 minutes again to come back home. I do this twice a day, four times a week; once in the morning before work, and again in the evening.

When I tell you the weight fell off, I'm not kidding ... my old college roomie recently came to visit ... when I went to hug her as they all came off the plane, the poor thing didn't know who I was and walked right past me ... truly a moment to savor ehehe ... basically where exercise was concerned, the more I did it, the easier it got; the easier it got, the more I did it :p ... for me, I love the water, so I've gotta swim. I also run now (still a wet-behind-the-ears novice but I can hold my own) and am finding that equally addictive. Between swimming laps, water aerobics classes, and running ... yeah ... consider me done :D

Generally I have fruit (breakfast) prior to my workout. If I am running I may have fresh fruit and also a fruit-date-nut smoothie for energy. I usually don't need to be as careful with my resistance training. I just have fruit and then workout when its digested (usually about half an hour).

After a workout I may eat another piece of fruit (a banana or two). The key for me is to make it efficient, which is getting the most out of a small block of time.

Peace.

I do an active and strong 2 hour yoga class 3 to 5 times a week and walk on the beach while my dogs run 4 times a week. I would do both more but my work schedule does not allow it. I work 3 12.5 hour shifts per week add the commute and there is not much left of the day.

Hi, Lcampio1 :)

Are you looking to go vegan or raw vegan?
If you're planning on going raw, are you looking for a slow transition or going 100% now?

Although this changes probably monthly, right now my routine is...

Monday-1 hour step class and 1 hour weight training class
Tuesday-1 hour treadmill, 1 hour mix of recumbant bike and elliptical
Wednesday-1 hour cycle class, 1 hour treadmill
Thursday-30 min. weight class, 30 min. step class, 1 hour weight class
Friday-1 hour step class, 1 hour Yoga, cycle class if I want
Saturday and Sunday are at home using either stair climber, exercise bike, treadmill, rowing machine

Monday through Friday are at the health club.

I do lots of stretching, ab work, and Yoga at home too.

I love my exercise time and wouldn't trade it for anything, not even food. Yup, I'd give up food before I'd give up exercising daily!

Vegan
Participant in a lifestyle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifestyle) characterized by 1) abstinence from use or ingestion of animal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal) products, and 2) avoidance of items tested on animals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_testing). While vegetarians may not eat meat, many consume and/or wear/use animal products: milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, honey, eggs, etc. A vegan does not. Vegans also do not wear or use animal-based items(leather, fur, suede, silk, wool, etc.)

Raw Vegan
Vegan who does not consume any form of cooked food. Items like baked potatoes, stir-fried vegetables, and many types of (cooked) beans would not be eaten. Steam is also a form of cooking, thus steamed products are avoided.

Transitioning to veganism
Eliminate animal products as well as animal flesh from your lifestyle. Eggs, cheese, yogurt, honey, leather items (sneakers, handbags, wallets, etc.), silk, or anything else that was made using animals or manufactured by animals would be avoided.

Hope this helps! http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c193/emoticonsgallery/smiley_aim.gif

I've got to rebuild endurance and strength. I did fall off the exercise wagon, I went from working out 6 days to maybe 2 or 3 times a month. I really have learned to like working out at home and will just start doing it at home. Previously, I was a student and used the university gym. I really prefer working out in the gym or another environment outside of the home. But, I am no longer a student and do not have use of the gym and financially, cannot afford a membership and so I have forced myself to embrace working out at home again. I do like pilates and yoga in the morning at home. It has just been a challenge as far as the cardio and weight training goes. Eventually, I'd like to join some sort of kickboxing class or something... I like the movements and the energy. I trying to get back on track.......

I dont know. For me veganism deals simply with dietary issues and not my feelings or beliefs about animals. That definition seems to include things that are political/personal in terms of the treatment and/or use of animal skins. To each his or her own for sure, but I personally don't ascribe to that definition of a vegan, maybe Webster does :p .

I agree with Ann...I'm finding it easier to stick with it, than the first time I went raw. It might be a stronger resolve, or maybe it's the "easier" detoxing phase. I haven't had the terrible withdrawl headaches like before. Haven't made it into the gym yet, but it's on my list. I'm a full-time student, and I also work, so I'm finding it very hard to fit in a workout time.

Best wishes,
Charity

I think I posted in the exercise section that I havestarted running. And to avoid embarrassment I hope it wasn't this thread.

But I am still at it 3-4 days a week. I cross train with a Schwinn Airdyne and am looking, this summer, at buying the new Schwinn hybrid road/mountain bike. Living in a rural area I'd like a nice road bike, but am afraid of tire problems, etc. Schwinn seems to have dealt with this problem...

I got a four mile run in the week before last (first time in ten years). Last week was finals (lots of correcting, grades, etc.) so I didn't have as much time to just run so I got on the treadmill and ran as fast as I could for two miles 3 times (different days of course). I also ski-ed yesterday and Airdyned Thursday.

I noticed yesterday my skiing was much better, legs stronger, and a lot more stamina since I switched from the weightlifting to the running.

For strength I do sit ups and push ups 2-3 days a week after a run.

I am sorry this post turned out to be so long.

Soccer, I play on a couple of teams...love it to pieces, but admit the transition to raw has made the after game get togethers a little weird...no more beer and pizza parties!
I also rebound everyday, such fun and it gives me an excuse to watch movies, I pop one in for 30 minutes and then pop it out....so it takes me a couple of days to see an entire movie, which makes recall a little strange, ( I tend to fill in the movie with dreams and whatnot, so "my version" of the show has fairly little to do with what most of the world saw!
I'd love to get into more running and back into weight training...
it's so cool to see what everyone else is doing with all their energy!

running 5 days per week (20 minutes)
weights circuit 5 days (25 minutes)

I live in NYC and the weather is so unpredictable that I had to get a gym membership finally. I replied to this thread because of a few things.

1] I'm struggling with raw! As soon as I started working out, I felt hunger on a level that raw wasn't satisfying. (I predict it was some kind of false hunger based on ingrained SAD misbeliefs). But... I started eating some cooked foods again once per day. Then twice... then... I was hardly eating raw at all. My weight has gone up three pounds, I feel heavy, and my skin looks terrible.

2] There is a sabotage factor to exercise for me. I think that if I work out, then I can have a little more of this or a little more of that. It's strange game I play with myself, where I am always the loser. I am hurting only myself and sabotaging all my efforts... all the cleansing when I first went raw... all the hard work I put in at the gym. I am not sure if this is the wrong thread to post this on, but I needed to post SOMETHING.

I went to the gym this morning and had a good workout. And now I feel vulnerable because I've had enough of my food/exercise games and will go back to being raw today. Of course, putting down the tricks brings the emotions flooding forth.

ah, I KNOW who you are, I'm with ya. The games we play with ourselves.
I do the same thing, try not to be so mean, like I said above, but at the same time, I want to treat myself, or think I can. Ha, I can't, it's a slippery slope back to where I was. I really want to follow this through.

The emotions are tough for me too....I've been FEELING so much lately. In general, just feeling. Lonely, and hurt come up often. Emailing acquantainces and getting nothing back is just killing me....where normally it wouldn't be such the huge deal. I don't want to come across as desparate, because that's not it, I'm just lovin' people and want to be loved back...make any sense? It's like I LOVE everyone now. So hippie chick.

I run 60 minutes a day and lift weights but my weight hasn't really budged. It is b/c I am not 100% raw and I love ice cream and eat it just way too much.

I know if and when I go raw the weight will peel off if I keep up this exercise routine.

I understand b/c I do the same thing. When I workout I am almost ravenous afterwards and feel that b/c I ran 6 miles today I can eat durn near whatever. I initially go for the raw fruit but after about 1 hour I am HUNGRY! A smoothie doesn't satiate it and downstairs I go looking for ice cream or popping something in the oven to fill that hunger that fruit and water just doesn't fill (at least that is what my mind tells me).

It is a never ending cycle and I KNOW I am sabatoging my workouts.

I wake up at 5 am M-F and run on my treadmill for 30 minutes.
I go to the gym after work at 3:30 pm and run for another 30 minutes on treadmill and 30 minutes of weight lifting

On Saturdays I will run 1 hour consistently on the treadmill.

I would love to incorporate more variety but I love the running. Plus I need to burn the calories from all of the food I eat.

I LOVE The FIRM too!!! Once you start, you can't stop! ;) Nice to see another Firmmy! What series to you enjoy most?! I'm definitely lovin' the TransFIRMER!!!
