I have been moving towards more raw foods for a while and am trying to do more sprouting but I have trouble with things getting moldy just as they get far enough along to use. Rice, beans, lentils, wheat berries, alfalfa all have that problem for me. What can I do to prevent this from happening?

Please us about the following things:
* your temperiture climate
* jars or trays for growing?
* how long do you soak?
* How often do you wash the sprouts
* is it mold or just white fur around the edges of sprouts? Got a picture you can show us?
* organic or conventional seeds used?

temps have been highs in the 70s-low 80s mostly.
I use trays.
I have had trouble soaking for a day as well as puting dry seeds in trays.
I have tried once and twice a day for the rinse.
It is mold, it has an odor. I know the white fur you are talking about. I usually don't see mold as the sprouts start to emerge from the seed, usually it is noticable the day that the spouts reach a decent length, 1cm or so but this has been a problem regardless of the plant being sprouted.
Mixture of conventional and organic, depends on the seed.

I rinse my sprouts a lot. But I don't have a huge amount of trays going at once. 2 or 3 at a time.

l'll try and get back to this question in a day or two. l have some suggestions, but l need to think about this alittle more because you ask some very good questions.

We rinse 3 times a day when it's warmer out. Maybe you need a small fan to provide some air circulation? I know people have had problem with mold growing on their wheatgrass and a fan seems to help quite a bit.
In the winter we can get by with rinsing only twice a day with no problem but warmer weather they really need more attention or they start to smell badly and we have to toss them.

What effect does rinsing have other than providing moisture to the seed?

It washes away any mold and bacteria that might be growing on the seed.

It also cools them off when the weather is hot, helping prevent spoilage.

mold on your sprouts means it is to hot where you are doing this. Hook up a fan and point it at your sprouts. Anything over 79 f and you will get mold so find a cool spot Doug in Calif
