So, I just bought 1 gallon of coconut oil on eBay. It is not certified organic, but the seller claims it comes from a remote area in the Philippines and does not have any added chemicals and was mechanically extracted using traditional methods.

The price was very reasonable and I was thinking about buying 3-4 gallons if the first one turned out ok. I just opened it up and ... well, I'm not sure what to think. It's yellow and doesn't appear to have any taste. I just brought it downstairs where the temp is around 70 to see if it gels up like it should. In comparison, my other canister of organic coconut oil is a translucent white color. It melts at 76 and gels beneath the temperature. And, if you smell it or taste it, it is undeniably coconut.

What do you guys think? The expiration date says September 2013. Is it expired or did somebody mix vegetable oil in or is it just another type of coconut?

Thanks,

I figured I would give some pics. The first is the real one and is actually about 1/8 full although you can barely see it in the photo. The second one I'm still trying to figure out what it is.

Here's after four hours downstairs at 70 degrees. I'm holding the original one upside down. The one I just bought looks like a strange margarine-type oil and is still liquid.

It could be refined coconut oil. It has a yellow color and does not have that coconut flavor. It has no taste. But it should still harden up. Yours looks a little iffy. I don't think I would use it if I were you.

Looks either spoiled or not pure to me....I would not risk it! Better safe than sorry!

Coconut oil is white as far as i know.

If you do buy a coconut oil, make sure it says raw coconut oil at the very least and organic if possible.

I wouldn't use that either!
