I made a huge salad tonight for each of us and we had been out earlier in the day and seen pea shoots for sale in the supermarket. 75p for about 12 - 20 shoots (I didn't count them). Spent a little while laughing at the daftness and came home. On returning I realised I have about 4 packs worth on each salad and about £2 of lentils and alfalfa and bean sprouts on each plate! It is staggering how expensive it is if you don't have a clue about growing stuff but you like gourmet foods. Peas shoots. Growing them is a very cheap doddle! Wheatgrass is another thing that people get big bills for if they buy a tray ready grown. I don't even buy in bulk yet but 1.5 kg of organic wheat was £2.85 in the expensive healthfood shop.
I don't know what the exchange rates are for all the countries represented on here but are the prices similar?

While I am not going to pay that kind of prices I don't begrudge anyone for trying to make a decent profit providing such things. In fact I don't really believe the people providing those items are getting rich. It costs a lot of money to run a business.

I don't begrudge the growers but what they get is peanuts and probably most of the cost is packaging. It does occur to me I might do well to set up a stall at the local farmers' market except I can't imagine growing any more pea shoots than I already do.

I paid £3 for about 6kg of black sunflower seeds with hulls on. I kept forgetting them the previous 6 times I was near the shop so I got lots in case I forget again in the future ;)

I'm not sure what the exchange rates are. But for a flat of grown wheatgrass it costs $9.99 at my local health food store. I grow my own though, and the seeds can be purchased there for $1.29 per pound. I'm pretty clueless about growing other stuff, as I said in my other thread, but I've been thoroughly reading the sprouting thread and hope to learn more. I am one who likes gourmet food, I guess. I enjoy cooking and prepping food, so I'm trying to learn to do this cheaply :). It gets very expensive if you aren't aware of all the little secrets that some of you know!

They are about £20 a kilo if I get them from the health food shop.

l checked the supermarket the other day and saw my exact pea shoot greens in a container. About 15 half grown shoots for about $3.00. They basically looked like sticks without any fully developed leaves. lt's crazy how they con the public.

What's the exchange rate? Your shop sound more expensive than here but maybe it's about the same. What variety do you grow and what is the price you get for 25kg pea seed? I can get 20kg black sunflower seed for £20 locally but it's not specifically organic.

Australian food shops are far higher than nearly all countries in the world. Our food prices are simply outrageous. For the exchange rate, just google `currency converter'

What variety do you grow and what is the price you get for 25kg pea seed?
l have been meaning to get back to you on that, + talk about the ideal length to grow them too.

A = they are snow peas.
A = 25 kg sack for 16.5 GBP straight from the farm.

25 kg of snow peas from a sprouting specialist shop cost 415 GBP. So there you go, sprouting companies are ripping us off.

I can get 20kg black sunflower seed for £20 locally but it's not specifically organic.
l get 20 kg of sunflower for 66.3 GBP

5 kg of Brocolli seeds are usually 365 GBP, but l knock them down to 205 GBP

See...our prices are shocking. lt's like that for everything: houses (some of the most expensive in the world), clothes, rent, shoes etc. People can earn good money, but most are broke anyway. Average rent for a dump is 265 GBP a week. Even people on a 150K salary paying off an average house are cash strapped because all the money goes into paying high prices for EVERYTHING!!! The U.S is sooo cheap to buy stuff, they don't know how good it is. Never live in Australia, lots of corruption and greed.

Gives me hope for my sprouting business. Oz has such strict import rules for seeds etc. That won't help prices. I have been using marrowfat peas as that is what I can source locally without making much effort. They will be coarser and less sweet than snowpea I would expect.

Oh yeah, many of my high priced sprouts come with a 15% discount and then some dollars knocked off the final price. So if l was most customers l would be paying even more. That's why developing good relationships is important. l always go through one person if l can.

The import rules are rediculous, but some people can still get stuff through customs if they know the special methods. All Bolivian Chia seed is irradiated in Oz, but one company in NSW are able to get it through as sproutable seed. And that gives me an idea...l have developed a special contact from that company and l am going to try and get her to get un-irradiated Bolivian sesame to add to the chia order. Sesame isn't prone to bugs etc, but they still irradiate it anyway.

I'm still dragging my heels about asking my farmer friend even though I can see the business sense for both of us. Sitting by the river drinking my 8floz of wheat grass and pew shoot juice. Wheat should have been cut sooner but nevermind.
