I absolutely swear by it!! I highly recommend to try and see for yourself on your cats and dogs.
Years ago my intuition said "coconut oil" to rid fleas on my cat. I thought it strange and tried it and was able to get fleas off easily and notcied they weren't jumping on her any longer. I left the oil on most of night then gave her a bath with coconut soap and fed her coconut oil reguraly as much as she wanted. Problem was solved.
Then on a later date I decided to see on the internet if this has been already discovered and it has been, but it's seldom known about.
I adobted a puppy last year and had been applying it on her then afterwards gave a bath because it's really greasey and people love to pet her... and I also fed some oil regurly to her. I had the only dog on the block that didn't get a tick that summer and she only got a few fleas.
This summer we now live in mountains and had an Indian summer over winter... it's BAD this year with fleas and ticks. Plus I take care of an abondoned outdoor cat and fleas all over porch... field mice in area etc.
My dog does not like coconut oil on her fur so much and she knows this means a bath right afterwards and she doesn't like baths. And also the first 2 times she still got some fleas on her. I feel due to all the wild mice and cat. ( Mice aren't inside my home). Well, I was stumped. She's allergic to fleas and is losing some fur. I broke down and bought frontline. First month worked and I flea bombed. Next month was an immediate attack on her and next dose did not work. I bombed my place twice in one day. Didn't do squat.
I was also out of coconut oil and could not find a place around here that sells it since I moved here. I finaly found some far away... now I can feed it to her and apply.
So last night I was like Sweetie.. I know you don't like this but have to! I applied the oil all over fur... and wala! NO fleas!!! Grant it for days I was picking 10 off in matter of few minutes.
Today while I was out she licked the oil off her legs and I saw about 5 fleas only on her legs where the oil was licked off. I immediately applied more oil on her legs.... and not a single flea has jumped on her anywhere.
Because of the circummstances... I will need to leave her greased up until I can absolutely get all the eggs, larve etc gone. This is a nightmare for my dog and me.
******* So how coconut oil works.... fleas and ticks can not tolerate the smell. Also if they dare try to jump on cats and dogs with it on.. they slip off. If not... it makes them drunk and easy to pick off. They likely will not be able to bite if there's enough oil on skin and fur.
Feeding them the oil the smell goes out through their skin and fleas and ticks can smell it therefore avoid. It's important to feed it to them daily... at least offer it. With my cat I'd dish out about a tablespoon on a plate and she'd eat as much as she wanted. When she refused to eat it this meant she had enough in her system. Sometimes she'd go a week without.
My dog sometimes refuses it... other times she wants a lot and I've stopped giving after so much in a serving sometimes incase is too much.
"WARNING" The coconut oil cools down their skin temp a little bit. Be very careful if A/C is on or is chilly outside. Wrap in a blanket if appears cold.
Be advised that the oil picks up dirt and dust and needs to be washed off soon especialy with cats. ( I have my dog in a lot of oil but washing her tomarrow to take most off and will apply a small amount if need to and will where she licks it off.)
Be VERY careful to them getting sun exposure especialy if they have light colored fur. This may bake their skin a little bit. Try to walk when sun hours aren't peeked or walk in shade, night time or early morn.
Coconut oil is VERY healthy for them. It's loaded with nutitriants and is outstanding for their skin and can help heal some bug bites, rashes and dry skin.
Also for as greasey as it is... It doesn't rub off on my bed sheets etc. I use cotton material. But it will get on your skin if petting.
Do not listen to any vets that tell you this doesn't work... try for yourself. If it doesn't work for people then they aren't doing it right. I'm trying to explain how to do it right. I've also heard a friends vet tell me not to tell people about this so he doesn't lose money on perscribing pesticides for flea and tick control! My vet agrees with me that coconut oil works.
