I am interested in people's opinions on the use of activated charcoal. Do you think it is helpful for the removal of toxins, or not a positive addition to a raw diet (seeing it is the antithesis of raw). I'm talking about activated charcoal from coconut shells. (It doesn't get absorbed into the body, but passes through, drawing out toxins. There is contention as to whether it also draws out nutrients.)

Bumping this post up... Does anyone take Charcoal in their diets? I've heard good things, but I'd like some opinions from my raw friends.

Sorry I can't help! But very interesting.
I would think if taken occasionally, having it draw out a few nutrients is no biggie. But that's only a gut feeling....
:) -get it? That was accidental.....LOL

I've never taken it internally, although I read where it will draw out poisons and such.
I have tried brushing my teeth with it, there are many YOuTube videos about it. But I stopped because the brand I have is so hard to open the capsule and it's very messy to do.

Yes
It did help with removing toxins from my system but I wouldnt take it again only because it also draws nutrients out as well which for me isnt worth it. I find the best detoxers to be algaes which also feed the body.

Thanks for the input. I've often looked at them for detoxing. I didn't realize it would have the same effect on nuturients as toxins.

If you have it, keep the charcoal on hand for food poisonings, for sure. Can't address how well it works for detoxing in general. Have you considered bentonite clay instead?

Hmm, didn't really think about this until now. I'd imagine zeolites are very similar to charcoal, in a sense that it removes toxins like heavy metals & mercury. But also I wonder how much of the good stuff is coming out too :-/ boooo. Too good to be true i suppose.

I took liquid zeolite for a couple months. I have no idea if it worked. I didn't feel any different and I didn't do any kind of hair analysis or anything to try to be scientific about it. I have never read anything about it also taking nutrients out of your system.
I've also done bentonite --generally mixed with psyllium before doing cleanses. Again, I never noticed anything either way with it either. Nothing scientific done with it either.

I've only ever used activated charcoal in emergency situations as a paramedic. I've never used it as an every day type supplement...

Based on what I've heard about activated charcoal, I think its a good think to keep in your medicine cabinet or med-kit in case you come across someone who is poisoned. I believe coffee enemas may be more beneficial to perform daily (extreme toxicity) or weekly (city living toxicity) as a detoxification routine.* I just started taking Chlorrella for extra protein (it is 50%) and to help with metal detox, I like it because its giving me good while taking bad.
*Search Gerson Therapy if you have questions about coffee enemas.
