Dr. Mercola's website sells a good one. Dr. Becker, the veterinarian shares the site with him. Then, Herbal Healer Academy, Dr. Marijah McCain's preparations are all very good.

Their products will be more in the 'preventive' line as opposed to assault and annihilation, if that's what you're looking for. What kind of bugs?

I've used Orange Guard for large bugs & Terro Ant Bait. A few other natural remedies: diatomaceous earth, peppermint essential oil mixed with water.

I live in northern Iowa and during the summer we get a lot of misquotes around here and also ticks in taller grassy areas. I am concerned about protecting my family and me from other harmful chemicals. There are so many options out there and of course all of them say they work, but who really knows how good they work. That's why I was thinking some people on this forum may use a more natural repellent. Any ideas on one that would work really good for this?
PS I heard a couple years back on NPR (national public radio) that they have extracted some chemical from oranges (possibly oranges I can remember) but they wanted to try and put it in soaps and such so that you are always using the repellent.
So I'm just looking for something healthy that can absorb into my skin that wont be harmful to me. Thanks!

I haven't tried it yet but I am really interested in CedarCide. They say the active ingredient is Pure Cedar oil. I don't know how well it works but they claim it is all natural. Must be toxic to the bugs though!

Is this to spray on my skin though? Its seems like more of a yard spray to keep bugs away, which isn't bad either!

Here is the link to the news article that I heard on NPR. Very interesting Link (http://www.npr.org/2011/04/18/135468567/repelling-bugs-with-the-essence-of-grapefruit) The active ingredient is nucatone which is in grapefruits and is safe enough to drink. Though I can't find any product that actually has it in it.

Nice, that doesnt look to bad at all. I've been doing some searching and it sounds like lemon eucalyptus oil works very well. Mix that with carrier oil and your set to go, might be cheaper also. Here is a decent guide on it here (http://chemistry.about.com/od/healthbeautyprojects/a/naturalinsectrepellent.htm). I found 32oz of lemon eucalyptus oil on ebay for $50 which would last a lifetime I'm betting.

I envy that but I don't think my son would. If he's out the bugs will eat him up like crazy.

Others have mentioned various essential oils and here's one that is a blend of essential oils, by Young Living: It's called Purification. I mix about 20 drops to 1/2 cup water in a mister and mist it in the area, and also on my son's skin.
It is made by Young Living.

Oh, and I alsmost forgot. Every year the carpenter bees start drilling into our cedar siding (LOL, I thought bugs didn't like cedar!) so I put about 20 drops of the essential oil, peppermint in some whater and spray it up there. It does seem to work. However, I need to reapply it a couple times during the summer.

Internally, I found the best repellant is garlic. I use to get tons of bites, but when I'm consuming garlic, I don't have any issues with them. Also diatomaceous earth can be safely used on the skin too for both types of bugs. You can powder your clothes with it too as long as you don't mind that look. You can try making a spray with water.

I remember Skin so Soft by Avon working really well to keep bugs off of me when I lived on the east coast.

Skin So Soft has a bunch of junk in it though, doesn't it? It's probably like using dryer fabric softener sheets, which keeps bugs away --due to the sheer toxicity of it.....
My thoughts anyway.

Just ordered 16oz of lemon eucalyptus oil. Its an over kill amount but was one 25 so the price was way cheaper than buying a smaller amount. 16oz at 25 drops per mixture of spray should last like 375 mixtures. Like I said overkill bit cheap and if it works I'm contemplating selling at the local farmers marker along with other raw food ill make up with my new dehydrator. Any tips please let me know, oh and I hope the bug spray will work lol

I noticed now that i no longer need bug spray since doing raw vegan. They leave me alone, yeah..... BEFORE, i would have a dark cloud of mosquitoes above my head.
I would use Skin so soft from Avon. Research the ingredient to make sure it is safe, in that time that i used that, i liked it and i wasn't concern about it.
I love the idea to use lemon eucalyptus oil, seem like good idea.
