View Full Version : Green Smoothies Gone Horribly Wrong!

I'm really hoping someone can help me out here, because this is really distressing me.
So, I'm not really going full on raw (nor even veggie), but I have been replacing all of my meals and snacks (except dinner) with green smoothies for several weeks now. I started with regular store produce but wanted to transition to organics only. So last weekend I went to the supermarket and the famers market and purchased quite a bit organic-only fruits and veg.

For some reason---and I just can't figure out why---something is seriously going wrong ever since then. My green smoothies every day are turning super rancid almost immediately. Up until today, I thought it was the water bottle that I was putting them in, that maybe there was something wrong with it, or it was having some kind of reaction with the produce I bought. But this morning I made another one with apple, orange, and spinach that, in less than five minutes, started to turn from a bright green to a darker shade, and smelling like very, very strong rotten onions.

I hadn't even gotten this morning's concoction near the old water bottle, so now I know it can't be that. And it can't be my blender, because I made two "treat" drinks this week with just spinach and banana and almond milk and ice, and those turned out fine. But I've used so many different combinations of produce this week, I can't determine at all what the cause could be. I've had a kale and melon smoothie go bad, a spinach apple and pear smoothie go bad, and this morning's spinach apple and orange, and at least one or two others I can't even remember now.

Has anyone else had this happen before too? If so...any solutions? I've wasted at this point over $50 worth of organic produce and I'm having to turn back to typical SAD foods because my awesome organic produce is rebelling against me. :=/

maybe use just the hard fruits like apple, pear, etc. most of the fruits we use are frozen so they are not in the soft form. Typical smoothie for us is carrot, ginger, water, kale or spinach, frozen fruit, nutritional yeast, agave or honey, and banana. Maybe freeze the fruit before adding.

could you need to take apart and super clean your blender?

I took apart my vitamix once and there was ungodly awful sludge that the whirring in soapy water wasn't cleaning. My own fault for sometimes not cleaning right away and leaving it overnight....

If your blender will cope with frozen fruits or ice then maybe the cold of those will help. How long are you blending? Is the smoothie getting too hot?

What kind of plastic bottle? I use either a manson jar or bubba keg cooler (only to show you the picture, you can buy this anywhere and any colour: http://www.shopbubba.com/ )

I no longer use frozen fruits. I typically use mango/banana.

Keep cold, very cold. (If i bring it to my work, i use a cooler with ice pack)

Don't over blend your smoothie either, it will heat up and oxidize faster.

When i make my smoothie in the morning, i usually drink it by lunch time.

All the best!

ps If you smoothies is foamy, you can use something cold such ice. Apple oxidize quite fast, you can use something citric such lemon to neutralize it. Or drink immediately.

I have been making green smoothies for about 7 years and I have never had this happen.

I do ALWAYS use something frozen in them (usually a fruit), but occasionally just ice.

How awful for you!

I didn't know you could take apart a Vitamix. How did you do this?

Mine is in the "shop" right now being fixed, so hopefully I will get it back just like new!

When you replace your container, they send you a tool to do this. But i think you can use a ranch. Look for a dvd instruction that comes with your vitamix. If you don't have it, try with youtube or google.
