Hi,

I am wondering if anyone knows if your tongue can swell up if your detoxing? I started the 30 day challenge on Thursday. I am a nursing mother of a 5 month old son and have been partially raw for months. But I have a background of fast food and junk. Just last Wednesday I gave in and went to McDonalds and had their fish sandwhich and fries and a root beer. Anyway I was raw Thursday and Friday morning I wake up to a tongue that is swollen and very sore. It is hard to talk very much and when I made my salad on Friday the dressing was a killer. I was also tired and shaking all day Friday. Anyway all I wanted after the salad on Friday was something bland. So I ended up having brown rice and avocado. Saturday you do not want to know. I am also having for months some times worse than others (this is embarassing) foul arm pits. There are times that I scrub them several times during my shower and still come out smelling. I am detoxing I think. Does anyone know how to make it go faster or easier? Its Sunday and my tongue is still the same. And what about nursing? Am I just screwing around to much! :(

That is an odd detox, the swollen tongue. I would sugesst maybe a food sensitivity or allergy vs a detox ? I would seek a Dr advice on that if it still a problem.

The foulsmells are detox. I have a problem with that but it only lasted a week. I used crystal rock, and Toms deo...and tom's mouthwash on a very regular basis. Now I am fine.

Wow, that sounds like some wicked detoxing going on...

I found this article good reading:
http://www.hacres.com/diet/articles/Detoxification.pdf

And this same site also has more information on Detox:
www.hacres.com

Alissa's book also covers detoxification.
I like to plug Alissa's book and dvd for two reasons:
1. It has been helpful to me.
2. She sponsers this here forum :-)

I think I read some of your conditions recently on this forum (mouth sores).
Just enter "detox" in the Search box of this forum and you'll get
of slew of results.

Check this link out (http://allergies.about.com/od/oniontestimonies/qt/uc_onions_km.htm)...

I agree it may be an alergic reaction. This reader above went to McDonalds, and is experiencing the same thing you are, but thinks it was based on onions. Also another common allergen is Soy, which can give you similar reactions.

The biggest allergen you may have run into at mcdonals is MSG! Its a nasty one...

Because you are still nursing, I think it is important to not do anythign wildly drastic with your diet because I have read that when you detox, some of that will make it into your milk. Now is such a key time though to be giving the right nutrition to your darling baby, so perhaps focus on getting in as many nutrient-dense life giving foods, and less on being 100% if you don't feel ready. Especially fresh vegetable juices, fruit smoothies, green smoothies, coconut water, and powdered green supplements are great. Cutting out allergen-foods though will likely benefit your baby more than anything, so getting out the wheat, dairy, soy, etc, is key.. go slowly though and only as fast as you are ready. good luck!!

Oooh! I feel your pain, I truly do. I have had the swollen tongue thing several times. Somtimes I feel it's due to food sensitivity (for me tomatoes, onions), sometimes it's a dehydration thing (which in your case may have been brought on my Micky-D's), and sometimes it's a detox thing. Usually the rule of thumb is, if you're doing everything "right" and you experience distress, it's a detox and will subside and you'll be better than ever. If you have slipped and put something harmful into your body, it's the natural consequence of doing so. The solution is the same for both cases...If it's a detox, you need to ride it out and keep fueling your body with wonderful raw food. If it's a consequence of slipping up, you need to continue to feed your body with wonderful raw food!! I, like others, am concerned that now may not be the ideal time to be starting the 100% raw thing. The detox you go through is good for you, but not necessarily good for the precious child you're carrying. All the "yuck" being pulled out of your cells, tissues, organs, etc will affect the vulnerable little dear, too. How about "cleaning up" your diet by eating healthy whole food including some cooked so you are healthier than SAD, but protecting your little baby from the detox distress? There will be plenty of time to go 100% after the birth. These are just my thoughts...I'm not a qualified expert or anything, but I am concerned about detoxing while pregnant.

I so apologize, Rawmomma!! I was under the impression you were still pregnant!! Forgive me!!! Even while nursing, though, I would be concerned about detoxing. Maybe some one else who is more knowledgeable would be able to offer some advice. The only thing I have first hand experience with is the "swollen tongue".
