Have you all seen this movie? Ack! I was shocked at how sick he got in just 30 days. I told my kids they aren't eating there again. They may eat SAD, but there's no way they are eating that poison!

btw, they took it pretty well since we rarely went there anyway. They wanted to know if pizza hut was ok still though.

Rawmommie-

Argh, I have to say I am so bad about MD's and my kids. At one time I got so 'busy crazy' that we were out of control going there. Although I just discovered this way of eating about 2 months or so ago, I had been investigating in PETA for a while and discovered all of the hormones the FDA, WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO PROTECT US, allows farmers to pump into animals to make them grow faster and fatter, and then I discovered the so called diet they were feeding these animals, and I was disgusted! I barely touched the surface of the subject and I was already turned off on meat and that whole industry... We are like a bunch of lab rats here!

Anyway, now my kids eat at home, and then we go to Mc D's to play in the tubes. They also have those apple dippers now, so I treat the kids to that instead of the other 'crap' I used to. I know the caramel still isn't ideal, but the cute thing is, my kids barely touch the dip- they just chow the apples, and because it comes from Mc D's, they think it is 'cool food.' So we are both happy and they haven't given up their favorite place entirely.

Oh, there is a kids show on Noggin I think called Lazy Town that teaches the kids about how fruit and veggies give you 'super strength.' They have a town super guy who eats just healthy foods and he conquers all evil- then there is the bad guy who tries to slip the good guy junk food to get him off his back. They show how the super guy gets weak after eating the junk and he usually collapses and falls asleep until someone comes along and feeds him an apple or something healthy- then he pops up and goes after the bad guy again. It is really cute, and it has helped my 7 year old understand on her level how great eating those things are. Check into it if your kids haven't seen it yet- it is really cute.

Rawmommie, would you say that 'Supersize Me' would be appropriate for children to watch as well? Would a 7 year old understand what's going on? I'd like to watch it with my daughter.

Thanks for sharing... I'd been wondering about that movie for a while now.

Hi Everyone,

Supersize Me was a great movie.
Every parent should rent that at Blockbuster.
Keep in mind, it is a movie about doing something to the extreme.

I loved the part where we learn that the guy's girlfriend is a raw chef.

Peace,
M.B.

Wow M.B. his girlfriend's a raw chef? Too cool!

Also, I think there's a "yacking" scene where he vomits? Just how bad is that? How much of it do they show? That's one thing I can't take in a movie is to see someone yack it up. As a teen, I could watch Freddy and Jason hacking, but couldn't stomach someone yacking!

Rawkinlocs,

Day 3 of eating just crap, the guy yacks right in the drive thru. It's an alltime great. I laughed for a week. My wife had to leave the room.

Peace,

M.B.

Actually, his girlfriend isn't a raw chef, but she is a vegan chef: http://www.healthychefalex.com/index.htm

Rawkinlocs - I can't handle people puking either, but that scene wasn't too bad. You can kind of tell when it's coming too, so you can close your eyes and plug your ears if you need to. (I think he might even say beforehand that he's going to be sick, but I don't remember for sure.) Puking scenes and scenes showing harm to animals are the only scenes I can't watch in movies!

Anyway, it's definitely a great movie. Kids can watch it, but I'm thinking they might get bored with it ... ?

Supersize me was awesome!! Every rawie should make their spouse/SO watch it. It was like a slap across my DH's face...it really woke him up.

I've got "Fast Food Nation" sitting on my bookshelf, I haven't read that yet, but I suspect the same response.

Hey...I love the sound of that cartoon!!! I'm going to have to check it out (except I don't have kids :) )

Thanks M.B. and qetta! Okay, just tell me this, do they SHOW it...do they show it coming out of his mouth? If so, I'll definitely fastforward or as you suggested qetta, cover my ears and close my eyes. Ewwww...M.B. I'm with your wife on this one - and you found it hilarious...just LIKE a man!

:D j/k!

They don't show it coming out of his mouth, but you can see him lean out of the window and hear it, then they show it on the ground afterwards. It's not bad. At least you can't smell anything through the tv. :p

I'm going to let my kids watch it. I think I heard a cuss word in there once or twice, but I think the message of the movie is way more important. I'm not sure if they will watch it all the way through, they may b/c of all the Mcdonalds propoganda that it shows, that might keep their attention. I've already talked to them about it, and they understand but I think the movie would show it better than mom telling them.

OH that's gross...OH that's awful...they show it on the ground??? OH that's nasty!!!

YUCK! Oh man! Okay...*composing myself

Wow...well, I'll have to be on guard to make sure I don't see that scene.

My nine year old watched this movie with me. We both were glad that we saw the movie. I've since read about others who did a similar diet and didn't get so unhealthy. What that says to me is that different people have different needs. Obviously, eating all that fat and sugar was way too much for his body. I was astounded at how quickly he lost his health.

We used to eat at McDonalds once a week. Since March of this year when our whole family went gluten and dairy-free, we've only eaten french fries at McDs a few times. In fact, we haven't eaten there in four months or so and don't plan to again because we don't really like it anymore. We don't really miss it (I have a six and almost ten year old, and they'd just as soon make organic french fries at home or eat out at Chipotle's now).

FEELIN' GOOD - I watched and enjoyed the movie but I will not let me kids see it. There are several sexual references in it, some profanity, and I think I remember a little glimpse of nudity. I found that it is not appropriate for my children. My children are 11, 9 and 6. You may want to find the spot about school lunches and let the kids watch that, I found that a big eye-opener.

The puking scene wasn't bad. We knew it was going to happen and then after he turned his head away from the camera. He was a very 'neat' puker, lol.

It was a long movie and it kept my interest the whole time. However my husband nodded off a few times during the movie!

Sharon, I went to the supersizeme.com site and there was mention of an upcoming "family-friendly" version so I'm assuming it will edit out the nudity, profanity and sexual-references.

Hmm I wonder if these folks were encouraged by Mac to do this.:)
It takes some folks longer to show signs of bad eating. This guy was in shape and had been eating good before he did this so it showed up faster on him.

Rawkinlocs that's great. Maybe I'll rent the family friendly version for the kids to see. It was long though, I don't know if the 6 yo would have the patience to sit through it!

I remember when I was young, everytime I went to Micky D's my stomach would hurt really bad afterward. It wasn't a nauseas feeling, more of a hard stomach ache, a similar feeling I've gotten when drinking alcohol on an empty stomach. It is really so freeing not having a temptation for the place anymore. I've been a veggie 2 1/2 years now and don't miss that place at all. I'm happy that my kids don't like it either, although they have an affinity toward Wendy's. Fortunately we don't make the trip there that much after the movie.

Hubby and I discussed the experiment. I think one of the reasons why his health declined, was that he limited his excercise in addition to the diet change. And he ate their fries so much. There was another fellow on the movie who was in pretty good shape and he ate several Big Macs a day. But he didn't eat the fries or the sodas. The fries and sodas definately added to his health decline, I would say. And he must have had a lot of combos, because he knew they'd ask if he wanted it Supersized. He could have avoided all that had he ordered everything a la carte. However I feel that he tried to eat the worst he possibly could to see how much his health could decline for his documentary ($$).

I wonder if he would do a similar experiment at Subway, like the spokesperson who lost all that weight. How would his health be affected if he ate 2-3 meals a day there?

Sharon I haven't seen this movie yet but I guess I got something different out of it from reviewing the web site than some folks did. To me all and I mean all fast food is bad. We have been brainwashed in this country to think that prepackaged food is healthy and that is simply not true. Even if I ate at Subway every meal for months my health would decline because the veggies are pre cut in the morning and have been sitting out how long before you order a salad? :) And most of us know that many dieases are linked to meat and dairy products.
I guess the more I learn about eating, exercising and health I have come to realize we all want a quick and easy way to eat and be healthy and unfortunately this is a fantasy that puts millions of folks on a "diet treadmill" all their lives and they still end up obese and dying young.

Curtis I completely agree with you but what I was meaning to imply was that in the 'cooked world' had he eaten salads w/low fat dressing and grilled chicken sandwiches and keeping up his normal activity levels most of the time, he may have not had such a decline in health when he was eating all the greasy, sugary, fatty food on a daily basis.

Without a doubt, fresh raw homemade food is the way to go, I was just thinking about his experiment amongst fast food and the cooked world.

Yes I see what you mean. Isn't it amazing how fast when you eat junk one's body declines?

Okay guys, I watched the movie last night... it was AWESOME. Of course his part was extreme, but to learn about all the ways they lure kids to go there with their play grounds and their toys... it really amazed me when he asked several kids who different people were and none of them knew 'Jesus' but they all knew Ronald McDonald! Then there was a group of gals that couldn't remember the Pledge, but they could sing the Mc D's song of "Two all beef patties on a seasame seed bun...."

In 30 days his cholesterol went from 165 to 235! And of course they focus on the Super Size option-who needs a 1/2 pound of fries in their diet at a time? He gained like 26 pounds during his trial. Very good movie...too bad it did have the few sexual comments it did... it really didn't need it. I think the penis comment was maybe to make men think twice about eating junk so they could possibly be better in bed? I don't know- I couldn't think of another reason his girl friend would say all of that... YIKES.

Definitly one for you all to watch if you haven't already- oh, and the puke scene is totally avoidable- you know when it's going to happen, just turn away for a few moments and then you are good to go...

LOL!! Feeling'Good, do you mean ... "Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun"??? :D LOL. I can't believe I still remember that and I don't even eat BEEF!!!

Is that movie available from the video store? I'd never even heard of it before. I'm eager to see it as my husband works for a company whose biggest client is .. shhhh.. Mickey D's (aka McDonald's).

Curtis, I totally agree with you. When I go grocery shopping and my son asks me to buy those prepackaged (processed) sausage bisquits, or frozen dinners, I tell him the same thing every time ... "I'm not buying fake food." I don't know why he keeps asking, probably just to annoy me.

Anyway, my grandmother passed away this past July at the ripe old age of 103. Other than old age diabetes, she had nothing else wrong with her. She never ate fast food. As a kid, I remember she made most of her food from scratch, unfortunately it was all cooked. Can you imagine how long she would have lived if she ate raw??? Ohmigosh! And she used to say, "What have I done so wrong in my life that God is making me live this long?" LOL. Bless her soul!

Anyway, after being raw for just 2-1/2 months, it's amazing how much my perspective has changed when it comes to cooked and fast foods. It just doesn't appeal to me at all anymore. I see people with their toddlers drinking soda early in the morning and I cringe. If they only knew ... but, unfortunately, a lot of people don't care. I've had people comment to me, "I'd rather die young than not be able to eat what I want." And I usually think to myself, "Well, you're going to get your wish." So sad.

Hi NutriMom :)

Yes you can rent it anywhere... Someone mentioned an edited version without the sexual content and foul language is also available.
