Chedda Onions Recipe:

Description

Crispy sweet "baked" onions with a creamy, cheesy, sunflower seed sauce that mimics the flavor of cheddar? Yes, please! This is another incredibly creative recipe by Callie England that will satisfy those cravings for any snacky, cheesy, savory, oniony type foods. Callie tells us, "These crispy onions are a great addition to salads and soups. Plus, they will store beautifully in the freezer, so make extra and you’ll have them for quite some time." They are crunchy, light, and oh so yummy!

Ingredients:

3 lbs onions (Callie used purple)

1 cup sunflower seeds, soaked 3 to 6 hours

.5 red pepper

2 T nutritional yeast

1 T olive oil

1 T lemon juice

1 T tahini

1/2 garlic clove

sea salt to taste

Methods/steps

1) Slice onions about .24-.5″ in width. Set aside.

2) Sauce: In a blender, combine the remaining ingredients. Blend until smooth.

3) Prep: Pour sauce over onions and mix until well coated. Place onions on a teflex dehydrator sheet, or a baking sheet. Dehydrate for at least 24 hours until crispy. If baking, use lowest temperature and bake until crispy.

Enjoy!

I am making these tonight! The sunflower seeds are soaking right now! Yummy! BTW, the 'cheesy' part of this recipe is almost exactly he same one I use for my jalenpeno poppers. The only difference is cashews instead of sunflower seeds. Give it a try, they are delicious!

I have every ingredient except for tahini. Is there anything I could possibly substitute for tahini?

Just leave it out, it should be fine! (It's just 1 tablespoon, so I can't imagine that it will change it that much).

I rarely have raw tahini, so I would be leaving it out anyway.

If you have raw sesame seeds and a coffee/herb grinder you could always make a tablespoon of finely ground sesame seeds and add them to the recipe.

If you do make it without, please report back on how it worked for you! Ü

These are good! When I first made the "cheese" I tried it and I wasn't too impressed, but after mixing it with the onions and letting it dehydrate over night, I must say that these are yummy! They almost remind me of those 'bloomin' onion' fat bombs that chain restaurants sell...but sooooo much better for you.

Also, about my comment above concering the jalapeno popper "cheese" being the same...please disregard...it's quite different.
