Can you log in Before you make a post?

I don't see a way to log into the board without first attempting to post.... Am I missing an obvious thing here?

on the right hand side it says login and password above the featured photos on the right.

I don't think I have ever moved my curser that far over, since everything I "needed" was in the forums. It even took me a second or too to figure out what you were talking about!!!
