Okay this kinda happened by mistake, but a glorious one at that. As I have tried to make butters in the past with my vita mix, and it was annoyin, frown inducing, dirt kicking. Because of the cleaning and the digging out and the pushing.

So by mistake I was grinding up some pumpkin seeds in my lil ol krups coffee grinder, maybe half a cup or more, and I drifted off as I tend to do thinking about "stuff", well I drifted far from shore, and I stopped and open the lid and I literally made pumpkin seed butter, and it wasnt dry, like other attempts in larger machines, the oil was released it was really nut buttery and not dry, nice texture. So this has worked for me with hemp seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds. Really really really good texture. I have tried grinding almonds but, eh, doesnt really work well for my machine. I have yet to try walnuts. But it might work. I like more of the seed variety, for healthier choices anyway. Though almonds are the only real nut I get down with anyway. But I wanted too share. Have fun.

How neat to know! Unfortunately out of the 2 coffee grinders we have, both have no capability to turn them on and walk away. They have a switch/level that you depress and have to hold it down the whole time or it will turn off.

About how long would you say it took the pumpkin seeds to turn to butter?

Hi... DebB yeah mine isn't a walk away grinder, I have to press the button. Usually I don't press long enough and I have ended up with bits of sunflower seeds, etc. So this time, I was literally pressing down, staring into space, humming, stopping for a few seconds, then doing it again. I would say a good 45 seconds, it didn't get 2 hot, so maybe longer or less depending on the power of your grinder, mine was an ol krups. But I always have used it to grind seeds for recipes, after my processor broke, and it never seemed to get them to a fine powder, but do it longer and the oils come out and you have butter.

Really! I never would have guessed it would turn it into butter that quickly! And I love the idea of just making a little and not a jar full at a time (the less to tempt me with). Thanks so much for sharing this Davylp - I never would have guessed this :)

No probs! I would imagine it's faster cause as I'm sure you know the coffee grinders can only hold a certain amount, I think I can get in a half a cup maybe more of some type of seeds, so since there isn't this huge amount, it just goes to town. Just keep pressing and you might have to shake it so the top of whatever you put in gets to the bottom as the rest of the seeds oils burst out...

I was never really a fan of using my food processor to grind seeds, though it does it, it just seemed to take longer, and the vitamix was annoying to clean after. So if I was using my processor for a recipe, I would always seperately grind the seeds into the coffee grinder, to get them into a nice powder, then plop them in the food proc, and then mix with the rest of the ingredients. Seems like a lot, but it was always so fast. I wasnt scraping and waiting for all the seeds to get ground in the food processor which is big, and you have to scrape. So who woulda thunk it!

But yes if a recipe calls for say 1 or 2 tablespoons of tahini, it's a breeze to just coffee grind it till the oils come out. Very easy.

DUH, you can also totally make my favorite COCONUT BUTTER. Just get the coconut flakes, or shreds, and there you have it. If anyone knew how much I have spent on those darn jars of coconut butter... smile.

The coconut butter IS pricey, isn't it? I guard mine like Fort Knox. ;)

I know Debs, sometimes I can't believe how much I pay for 'the good stuff'. I'm going to try making coconut butter in my coffee grinder like you suggested. If it works it could take a real chunk out of my grocery bill! ...can't believe I didn't think of it myself.

Thanks. I agree when you say "Whoddathunkit?"

I have an old small coffee grinder I bought at a garage sale for a buck and every time I used it, I thought it was going to be its last run as it was straining! LOL. I seriously doubt if it would do it. But am wondering about my Magic Bullet.....Hmmmmm.

Thanks again,

Mary Kay

And I thought everybody knew this...:woot:

I read somewhere a long time ago....don't make almond flour in your coffee/herb grinder cuz it will turn to butter and sure enough it does!
