View Full Version : Hypothyroidism

Ok, I read article that suggested the thyroid requires red meat to create thyroid hormone. :(. Is this true or made up?
I didn't have hypothyroidism when I went raw in 2006, but was diagnosed two years ago. Since then I've been put on hormone replacements and gained 63 pounds back. I can't seem to get back to raw. After that article, I panicked. Is raw for those with hypothyroidism ?!
Someone told me to talk to Deb B. Any help out there?
Hi ShelShel ~ I'm also hypo (after being hyper and having my thryoid ablated/killed). I've been raw vegan for the past 4.5 years.
I was hypo before going raw vegan... It is a challenge maintaining my weight. I do have to watch what I eat (doggone it! - wink - )
I was on 3 separate prescriptions (2 of them compounded and 1 was generic synthroid), but now I'm on a detox program through Dr. Robert Morse ND and have gone off my RXs and am taking herbs and glandulars to hopefully regenerate my thyroid (as I do still have living thyroid tissue and maintain some thyroid function).
What hormone replacements are you on? For your thyroid?
I can't honestly answer if red meat is required to create thyroid hormone since I was supplementing mine while vegan with the above prescriptions...

Nope; what can you get from red meat that you can't get anywhere else (hint hint - nothing)? The thyroid needs many nutrients, especially iodine, but there are none that it needs that you can only get from red meat.
Iodine is very important to thyroid function, and a big cause of hypothyroidism (other then having your thyroid irradiated or getting thyroid surgery) is actually fluoride from toothpaste, drinking water, and many other sources. Bromine (found in bromated bread) and chlorine (drinking water, chlorinated pools, showering in unfiltered water, etc) are other culprits. These substances block the thyroid from absorbing iodine because they, like iodine, are all halogens (very reactive elements with 7 valence electrons - look on any periodic table to see this). Very many people today are actually deficient in iodine because they are exposed to so much fluorine, chlorine and bromine - and eating food from such mineral-deficient soil doesn't help either. Sea vegetables are one of the best sources of iodine there is.

Thanks for the replies. :)
I'm currently taking: levothyroxine.
And in the afternoon: super b complex and
Master gland (herbs for all of the glandular
Systems)
I was just shocked when I had read that article
Because I wasn't diagnosed with hypothyroidism,
Until after I had been raw for years. Not that I wasn't
Tested for it before, they just never found anything.
I was on birth control and have stopped for a full week.
I am trying to eliminate anything that could affect my
Thyroid and blood pressure.
Deb B how are your energy levels raw? Mine use to be fabulous.
:). But I'm not 100% right now so I am really tired all
The time.
I'm trying to learn more and eat 100% raw again, but again
I didn't want to be sabotaging myself
Thanks for the replies. They are greatly appreciated.

Ok, I'm going to start supplementing this and start back to raw tomorrow. I'm going to take this one day at a time. Raw always feels best. Always. So I know it is right for me. It just is. That isxwhy I keep coming back. ;). Thanks for all the info it is greatly appreciated.

Hi, ShelShel,
When I went off of raw, I started suffering from hypothyroidism. Well, I have all of the symptoms of it. Including the palpable swollen throat thing going on. I know a lot of raw foodists/scientists say there isn't really a link between goitergen food suppressing thyroid function, but I gave up kale smoothies and the like because whenever I consume them I feel this awful, cold, swollen feeling in my throat where the thyroid is.
My budget is just awful right now. I do well to buy my raw fruits and vegetables. I can't afford to get to the doctor right now, and when I do it will be a naturopathic doctor. So for now I'm struggling through this figuring it out on my own. Definitely my symptoms are greatly relieved eating raw. Lately I've been craving sauerkraut and from what I understand, the offending element is broken down in the fermentation process, so I'm going to go ahead and make a batch. I need to work on incorporating more seaweed into my diet.
Please let me know how you're doing with this!

Hey, Stina. :). Yes, I actually THRIVE like nothing I have ever done when I am 100% raw. The weight falls off. The energy spikes. Mood is great. Skin is glowing. Don't you wonder how I could walk away??? When I think back it was a slow slipping back into old SAD habits because of lots of extra socializing and this need to make others around me feel comfortable while eating. :(. Couple that with a loss of income. I couldn't afford to eat raw with the rest of our family eating SAD. And I just gave up. Now we are steady again financially. My new job in leveling off and less stressful. I'm ready to start getting back to what I know is right for me. :). Keep trying RAW really works.

Hey Shel SHel same here. Doesn't that suck when you need raw the most (stress) we do it less. I hope you will be thriving again soon.

Yes, there isn't a day that goes by I don't think that. Why was it so easy for several years and then....agh! It makes me crazy! :p. It is ok. We can always come back. ;)
