I've been about 98% raw for 3 weeks now. The exceptions I am having are some organic mustard, brags, and the occasional decaf coffee.
But now I am starting to get some real cravings. When I think about doing this forever... Eek... it is seeming like a sacrafice, but I know that this is the best way to eat so I don't want to do back...
I am having a particular craving for chips and dip. You don't understand how deep this goes. I have had chips and dip every Friday since I was a little boy. I don't have a dehydrator so I can't make any. I am wondering - what if I had baked potato chips and some kind of raw dip once a week. How bad are baked chips? When they are dehydrated aren't they essentially dead anyway (i.e. no enzymes).
This is big for me.. I NEED chips and dip. In Canada the dip is made with cream cheese and there is this dill pickle dip that... Oh help me :(

Hi! Great job on your transition!! I could totally understand.. Have been a chips and dip addict all my life. Now I've become a kale chips addict even though I can't have any as I'm detoxing. They are soo delicious!!! Go to a local Whole Foods and get kale chips by a brand called Rhythm Superfoods kale chips - the best flavor is zesty nacho... Tastes like pizza, I've been hooked. Another brand that's really good is Alive and Radiance kale chips - best flavors are southwest ranch and chipotle. : )

its a huge long war adjusting to raw veganism
sticking to it all week then making healthy cheats
on weekend is rock solid strategy to me
i added in my weekly fasts (24 hours to start), monday fasting club ,
in order to help get tighter grip on appetite .
plus clean tongue / taste buds . after you get into
5 days or more raw per week along with fasting the
next step is you'll find the heated cheat foods to not
taste as good as raw stuff

They are simply the best!!! My friend who eats a SAD diet is hooked on these kale chips, especially the Rhythm Superfoods zesty nacho flavor. So easy to make too if you have a dehydrator.

Thanks for the replies! So not sure if we have kale chips up here (no Whole Foods in Canada) and I am very partial to the potato chips. Can you tell me, do you think baked potato chips are a bad cheat? Should I endeavor to find a raw alternative or is it worth doing if it keeps me sane.

I've been told by several raw food health experts to totally cut out potato chips out of my diet, even the "healthy" ones. It clogs your system up and feeds candida/bacteria. You can find kale chips at any health food store. The two I recommended are the best kinds in my opinion.. And not as pricey as other ones. Order them online or invest 30$ to 50$ on a dehydrator and find some simple and easy recipes on how to make kale chips online.

You can find very inespensive dehydrators too. You don't have to fork out $100 - $200 for the Excaliburs, for example.....But if you do get an inexpensive one, make sure it has a thermostat on it, so you don't end up cooking your food. Or you could even leave your oven door open and turn on very low and try some kale chips to begin with. And if you can't get it low enough, well then at least you can taste what kale chips are like, for example.
I have three dehydrators...LOL, I did upgrade to two Excaliburs, but before them I have had an American Harvester --round one---for a dozen or more years. This can at least get you started, then you can upgrade if you enjoy doing it.
Then there are flax crackers, and there's some nut cheesy spreads/dips...you can even combine them with avocados, or just do plain avos/no nuts for some guacamole etc.
This is a raw food forum, so if someone does highly recommend something cooked, it may be deleted...So keep that in mind.

I appreciate that but because I was able to ask my question and hear some responses that has persuaded me to try the raw alternative. This Friday it will be a raw sour cream dip (with some dill) and kale chips!

people take plain box fans like at link then use paper furnace filters stacked about 5 high , between each layer they put things to dehydrate . they tape / tie all filters into a stack then tie to fan with fan on bottom pointing upward then let fan run for like two days in order to dehydrate stuff . maybe it works to make potato chips , i dont know . only thing is if it me i wouldnt trust the paper furnace filters to be healthy / clean . ide have to read more about it to make a decision . ide prefer to take furring strips to make frames to which i then staple un dyed cheese cloth to for drying trays . link : http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-3733-Box-Fan/dp/B002YIAH6S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334028876&sr=8-1

You could make Alissa Cohen's onion dip, but instead of onions use raw pickle's...Bubbie's dill pickles are raw! I have heard that her onion dip is just like sour cream and onion dip. I personally haven't made it cuz I don't do well with raw onions, but it should work!

but this does bring me to the question: can you dehydrate potatoes?? I can't imagine that it would taste very good..anyone tried this?

If you have a dehydrator, raw corn chips and sprouted hummus is a quick fix for missing the chips. Also fruit roll ups are soooo easy and can fix the sweet craving. Another personal fav is mixing cacao and coconut butter with either a little honey or agave and rolling it into little balls for little chocolate treats. All kinds of recipes on the internet. Good luck and you'll eventually hit on something that makes you go mmmm.

I mix soaked/ground flax with vegetable pulp (from the juicer- I usually use carrot, tomato, kale, celery, garlic and onions), blend it together in the blender til it's a pancake-batter like consistency (*add however much water to do this, plus salt and what not, whatever herbs or flavors you want the chips to be). Then pour it onto a flat pan on top of wax paper and dehydrate. I use the oven on low and don't really fret about it because I'm not 100% raw anyway, but I'm sure with a dehydrator it would turn out even better.
You will end up with a tortilla basically. Keep dehydrating for a crispier one (and break up into small pieces for chips). Or you can just use it as a tortilla. It's great!

I have tried a couple of recipes for raw potato chips - one was salt and vinegar. I tried... really I did - but I thought they were horrible! Maybe there is a better way, but I found them to be starchy and I did soak/rinse, etc. as instructed.

How about a salsa as dip? any good ideas out there on that? Then it's only the chip you have to worry about.

Zucchini slices get really crispy in the dehydrator!

Do you have a health food store near by? If not you can order from upayanaturals. They have chips. You need to try kale chips.
You can go to Lowblaws and asked them to carry them. They have organic produce now and organic food.
What kind of appliance do you have? If none, get a cheap food processor and make your own dip sauce. You can use cabbages as chips until you get your dehydrated chips.
Raw chips are so much tastier and more satisfying then the dead chips they sale. I cannot do that anymore, i preferred my raw chips.
Check for a few recipe to make a dip. One easy one, is macadamia nuts, with red sweet pepper, lemon juice, enough water to blend, piece of garlic or green onion and Himalayan salt. Feel free to add anything else for more flavor.
All the best

Hey, there, are Bubbie's dill pickles _truly_ raw? I keep hearing different things. At my health food store, they told me they weren't. Would like to know one way or another for sure.
Thx.

Sorry I'm coming to this thread a little late, I only got my Vitamix last Saturday and I just started a work contract last Monday, so doing all my searches today for chips and dips! The chips part is actually pretty easy.
I know of 3 types.
I haven't made more than one kind but I found Abeba's Krazy Krackers last spring doing a search for chips. And with the Vitamix they're so easy to make. The various flavours I think will take care of my chips cravings.
And for 2 other types of chips, I've made kale chips several times and they're easy.
I also used to make potato chips by slicing potatoes really thinly and then coating them in lemon juice/oil with salt, at the time bringing in salt just for chips after not have salt for many, many years. That's probably why I only made a few batches. I was afraid of having too much seaweed after a clerk in health food store warned me but Hippocrates said no problem, so now eat seaweed with hardly any worry and still don't eat a lot anyway. So I plan to try again using seaweeds powder instead of salt.
This time I'm going to try with things like sweet potato instead of potatoes. Rawmazing also has a recipe for ones done with red and yellow beets so that will be good to try, too.
And I'd use a combination of dulse and kelp instead of salt. I'll slice them with a mandoline, put in a bowl with lemon juice and oil and dulse and kelp and then dry in dehydrator.
Baking/cooling racks
The thing that I never liked with chips is how they curl up. They cut the top of my mouth a bit too much. I bought regular cake cooling racks way back when to make the potato chips with and I use them by turning them upside down so the "feet" face up. They hold the cut veggies flat so that they dry without too much curl. I remove the cooking racks at the same time I flip the chips and remove the parchment paper linings from the trays.
Abeba's crackers don't have this crinkling problem, btw. They dry curved exactly like Pringles chips do. It's pretty neat.
So there are 3 chips choices - kale chips, sliced veggie chips, and batter chips made like Abeba's that you blend up from various ingredients into a thin better that you then spoon onto lined dehdyrator trays.
The next, harder, step is looking for cashew-less dips!
On with my googling ... :D

instead of using a metal rack... i would simply use another of the mesh sheets on top - pushing it down so it sticks to the chips and keeps them from curling.

I dehydrated jicama chips tonight for the first time - i sliced it really thin, put a sort of bruschetta mixture on top and put them in the dehydrator for 12 hours or so. They got crispy and delicious and i would guess i could put any sort of topping on them like a raw sour cream and onion or salt and vinegar or ranch. definitely hit the 'snacky' spot.
