Hi everyone,

Hello Raw wife, Welcome, I am also from upper state NY. You familiar with the Lockport area?

Welcome! I'm a newbie too. The main tip I can give is not to let yourself get too hungry. In the past, when I tried to eat more healthy, I was not eating enough. EAT! I really believe that especially in the beginning, it is important to have food available at all times. Alissa's stresses this in her book as well. I munch at my desk all day with my raw food. I pack my lunch and snack for work. I keep fruit in the car with me. I buy the Lara Bars and keep them in my purse. And I still get cravings but not as much as I would if I was hungry. Also, when I get cravings, I do alot of self-talk to myself. I remind myself of why I'm doing this. How I will feel if I eat whatever it is that I'm craving. And I tell myself if after 30 days, if I still MUST have "whatever I think I want" we can discuss it then. ;). Hey, whatever works :p
Hi and welcome ! I am in NY, Orange County. Are you anywhere near ?
When I first went Raw I started off by staying Raw until dinner then having a really healthy Vegan dinner. It was maybe 2 or 3 weeks until I was ready for 100% but go at your own pace, you don't have to change your life style over night. Lara bars are great,as mentioned above. I buy the pre-washed organic salads to make life easier. I always keep frozen bananas and other fruit for afternoon smoothies, so quick and easy !
I encourage to get Alissa's book and DVD. Seeing her prepare the food makes things so much easier !
Don't give up, just do what you can and take it one meal at a time.

Raw Wife..where in NY ......
Sass...you live in Lockport not too far from me. I work in Rochester NY (and our Regional Ofiice is in Amherst I go there for meeting from time to time). I live south of Rochester in the Finger Lakes. I am the only raw person in my area that I know of. Not much of a Raw Community. There is a Vegan Community but Raw is not a popular idea..Yet !

Hi Twinee1, I have X-inlaws that live in Penn Yann, I've been there a couple times, it's a beautiful area out that way. Rochester isn't too far from me, I also don't know anyone around my area that is raw. it sure would be nice to have raw get togethers around here. :)

Maybe over time it will grow in this area. We may find there is a handful number already on the Board.
We have been on that Lake for 11 summers now. It is our favorite Lake in NY, we are into "Lake life". You mention Penn Yan, soon I will be living 3 miles from town and that is where we are building our home overlooking the Lake.

I just found this old thread for something to do as I gazed out the window at the most recent snowstorm  ....glad to see there actually are raw fooders in northern new york! I live in Jefferson County...right outside of Watertown...Is Lockport near Rochester??? I am about an hour from Syracuse...just wanted to say hi to all....we'd have to drive to do a potluck wouldn't we all....but maybe we can plan something this summer (when the snow melts!) and meet in a central location???? just a thought on this cold winter day!!!

When do you have potlucks? Monthly? Weekly? I may have to make the trek come summertime (there is sunshine and warmer weather coming eventually right??) How many people come to these get togethers????
Would anyone be interested in coming to my neck of the woods? I have a cottage on Lake Ontario (we own a seasonal boat marina) and the weather is actually gorgeous for a couple of months right? :D I am also a runner and race director for a 10K race the first Saturday in August....any takers on that??? Maybe you all can come and run/bike/walk/in-line skate it and then we can all have a raw buffet the next day!!!! (Sorry, I have cabin fever today and am DREAMING of warmer weather!!!) I have a website for the race but am embarrassed to say it is currently undergoing a makeover....2 years outdated....I just forund a helper though to take over...(maybe she can even help me post a picture here! :D Someday) Here is my website link....she is working on it this weekend but it should be good next week?

Diantha, the potlucks are monthly...the 3rd Sunday of the month in the evenings. Very kid friendly too if you have kids. I've only been to one so far but there were about 10 adults there and it was great fun (and the food was so delish!).

Hello! I'm new to this sort of forum...
I just finished 25 days 100% raw after being VERY inspired by Alissa's book. But I found myself getting really depressed so I stopped. I think it was because I wasn't getting enough living foods. I also live in New York state and even the organic veggies from wegmans didn't feel very alive. I just ordered a sprouter and some sprouts and so I am going to try again.
Another issue I'm having is that everyone is telling me that I am too extreme or rather the 100% raw goal is too extreme. So it's hard to get support.
One last thing: is drinking Mate as bad as regular caffeinated tea?

NIIIICE! I will be moving back to Ithaca this summer (I attended Ithaca College from 2000-2004) to help with the development of an Eco-hostel. I'm psyched to hear that there are other raw foodists in the area (although I'm not surprised, it is ITHACA after all. . . :p ). Ahh, can't wait to return there. . .I-town in the summer is Bliss. Let me know when you're having potlucks this summer! :D

Get used to the criticism. People don't feel comfortable when they feel you may be on to something! That would mean changing their whole perspective and most people are just not willing to go against the grain...Stand up for yourself and be strong! It took me 4 months to transition to 100% raw and I've only been 100% since 1/1/06 but I can tell you that (for me) 100% is easier than transitioning because it's either raw or not right so you either eat it or you don't...My only cravings now are for certain raw foods so I go with it and listen! My friends and even extended family sometime question me but I use it as an opportunity to educate rather than be embarrassed anymore. Good luck!

Raene-
I'm heading to Ithaca to visit my parents in a couple weeks (I grew up there), and am wondering the best place to get raw goodies when I get home? I'm only going to be home for a week but will certainly have to do my own shopping. Green Star/Wegmans? Is there anyplace to find young coconuts? (I can find NONE in Vermont). Also, is there anywhere that sells prepared raw snacks, juices/smoothies, etc?
Thanks! And yes, Ithaca is totally upstate. At least I always refer to growing up in "upstate New York."
