View Full Version : Struggling with being RAWesome, but I know it's the best way.

My problem with being raw, is that my tastebuds are not accustomed to it. When I wake up, I don't quite crave fruit, perhaps I just haven't been exposed to things my tastebuds want.
Also, when I try and find raw recipes, they are so complex! All I have is a blender and my family already thinks I'm a freak and would never get a vita-mix, dehydrator, or food processor.
I also have some concerns. Is eating too many nuts bad? I find that I need walnuts as some fat. I don't think anyone could be healthy without fat. If we were cavemen, we would have surely found sources of fat.
I'm just confused, overwhelmed and upset because I have had acne and keratosis pilaris for 4 years now. Ever year, I say, "this is going to be the year I shall rid myself of these maladies," and it never is! My senior prom is in a couple of months, and I just want to at-least by college have a handle on this! I want to live! Not live behind my computer screen searching for the cure!
I don't fancy olive oil or any processed oil for that matter. I don't want to consume flax, seed because I have heard of it's hormonal effects, or is that just the oil for some reason?
Any delicious easy salad dressings? And easy recipes that save you? Thanks so much guys! I'm new, 18, and delicate!

Eating too many nuts isn't bad as long you don't react to them or you are doing great with them. Everyone is unique and goes also to different phase. Maybe your body needs the good fat at this time so don't worry about them, unless they are giving you problem. Generally, this isn't good to do too much nuts but again, everyone is different. Make sure you soaked them and they are truly raw and you will be ok. Personally, i don't do well with nuts unless they are truly raw and soaked.
Nut slow down detoxification and they over taxed the kidney. If you have weak kidneys, it may be best to be careful with them and to eat them in moderation.
Since you have acne condition, it may be best for you to slow down with nut until your body heals the source of this problem. You can consider avocado as a source of fat. Coconut also.
All the best

Hi and welcome! :heart
It can seem overwhelming at first.... just relax and keep reading about raw and you'll be fine. It takes a while to figure out what foods you like and how to prepare them -- it doesn't have to be complicated at all.
A blender is fine to start with -- you can make green smoothies, raw soups, salad dressings and sauces right now!
A simple salad dressing I've been enjoying lately is;
an orange, peeled
one roma tomato
one stalk celery
a few TBS extra virgin olive oil
salt to taste
Whir that up in a blender and YUM!
Have you tried green smoothies yet? Super simple, satisfying and delish. Take a few bananas, add some ice cubes, a few handfulls of spinach or whatever greens you have on hand, if you feel like it add a few strawberries or any other fruit you like and blend it up..... voila!
Raw will have your skin glowing in no time! You don't need to use a lot of nuts if you don't want to. Avocados are a wonderful source of fats too.
Btw I don't like fruit in the morning either. I usually have a green smoothie or a salad.... sometimes a nice creamy raw soup like tomato or mushroom.... sometimes guacamole on flax crackers or even miso soup. The beauty of raw is, you can eat whatever you like, whenever you like! Your tastebuds will adjust and you'll find yourself craving raw dishes.
This is a great site for support and information. Alissa's books and dvds are very helpful too!
Again, welcome -- have fun!

l find that the best way to get into the taste of raw is to eat a big bowl of alfalfa sprouts each day before the main meal (sprout them yourself). The alfalfa may even burn your mouth the first few days, but stick with it every day because they will start radically changing your taste buds within days. After a few weeks of doing this eating raw vegetables will become very easy. + eating the alfalfa before any bad cooked food will diminish your taste for the bad stuff and make you question whether you really want to eat the bad food anymore. ln other words, alfalfa sprouts will train your taste buds towards healthier choices.
I also have some concerns. Is eating too many nuts bad?
Yes, but don't worry about it for now. Raw is a process.
I don't think anyone could be healthy without fat. If we were cavemen, we would have surely found sources of fat.
l believe fat is very important, but not straight concentrated fats, it must be pre-digested fats. ln other words, fats which have been converted to fatty acids via the sprouting process. This is the safest way to consume fats. So eating things like sprouted nuts and sprouted seeds is ideal.
I don't fancy olive oil or any processed oil for that matter. I don't want to consume flax, seed because I have heard of it's hormonal effects, or is that just the oil for some reason?
best to get your oils from sprouted seeds and nuts via fatty acids.

Eating too many nuts isn't bad
What about the acid condition it often brings on? How about the high phosphorous? How about the high concentrated fat levels being well over recommended levels when eaten in excess? What about the hemorrhoids that many nut eaters complain about from over consumption?
Generally, this isn't good to do too much nuts
The two statements appear to contradict themselves. ???
Sorry Raw Angel Mum; l normally bite my tongue with much of the stuff l read, but l couldn't let this one slip past.

hello and welcome.
i am very new to raw myself and yes it is very overwhelming. my tastes buds were all jacked up from SAD food so when i went to eating raw that was very hard. i craved nothing that i should be eating and at some points i would eat cuz i needed to not because it tasted good. (at that point all i wanted was something fried and smothered in cheese!) but i stuck with it and feel great. i to prefer salty rather than sweet so fruit was not really an option in morning. so i do the green smoothie i also eat tons of guacamole prob everyday if i dont have flax cracker i buy these rice chips there r not raw but there gluten free so there good lots of salads and try out different dressings so u will never have same salde twice. like sunflowers and red pepper one of my favs or avocado dill. and for dinner raw soups r great for me cuz im still new i dont have time to make complex things that takes days to make. u will have set backs but dont think about those just try to be healthy =)

Eating too many nuts isn't bad as long you don't react to them or you are doing great with them.
Generally, this isn't good to do too much nuts but again, everyone is different.
- Wrote this by respect of Alissa philosophy of freedom...... I personally for myself feel that i have to be careful with nuts but unless someone has kidney problem etc... if they want to eat plenty of them, this is up to them as long they feel great with this. It isn't because nuts don't agree as easy with me that everyone shouldn't eat them.
Raw food is a truly a journey and everyone is wire different because of DNA, past food choice etc.... At some point the body restore to balance and will heal. I feel that eating sprouting nuts for breakfast is far more better then a sad breakfast pack with chemical etc... So whatever Alissa's philosophy about freedom is what makes the most sense. The mind is the number one to convince that raw food is the way, and if you feel repulse by fruits in the morning then you shouldn't force it. The body will gently send the perfect craving for the food it needs.
All is well

^ I'd like to slowly learn and work up to eating my "optimum diet". Finding high quality sources of nutrition, controlling my sugar, growing my own food, not eating many nuts, finding out how certain foods affect me, acidity levels and so on.
For now though staying completely raw is hard enough as it is without going all raw nazi on myself! Little steps like introducing new foods and cutting down nuts are good but I can't do everything at once. It'll take time.
I have other things to concentrate on too so I'll just keep working on it little by little. I'm only just starting day 21 haha. I've learnt a lot in three weeks.
For the first month I think Alissa is completely right. Eat whatever you want and go for what you feel like eating as much as you can. As long as it's raw don't worry too much. Even if your eating two bags of nuts a day it's better than eating a huge fast food meal or something. It's a learning process. You can't expect to know everything at once and while you're learning your diet doesn't need to be perfect. It's still a good deal better than a SAD.

l didn't include the entire context because it still doesn't make much sense.
Eating too many nuts isn't bad as long you don't react to them or you are doing great with them.
So can you still eats 3 cups of nuts each day if you don't have any bad reaction in the short to medium term? What about the effects of all that fat in the long term?
Generally, this isn't good to do too much nuts but again, everyone is different.
-
So l take it some people can eat many cups of nuts each day and be healthy in the long term. Really??
Anyway...no big deal, just bringing up points that don't appear to make any sense in the real world. Just sayin'...don't want people getting all crazy over it. l don't mean to be difficult, but it brings up more questions than answers.
Were these quotes your own words, or were they from somebody else?

Go to youtube and watch some really easy recipe videos. Rawdawg Rory and the Monarch's (The Raw Food World TV Show) are some good ones! Once you find some recipes you love it will be really easy!
I find I eat a lot of the same things... green smoothies, cacao shakes, raw tacos, sushi (with carrot "rice), salads, coconut water, kombucha, raw pickles, olives and sauerkraut. It really does get easier!
Hang in there and best of luck!!!
