during green smoothie or juice feasts? Even if you drink green smoothies with bananas every 2 hours, there's no way you'd get enough calories to prevent starvation right? how does this work?

^ I don't know much about fasting yet but I think it probably does go slightly into "starvation mode" but that doesn't slow the cleansing and healing processes which is the point of detoxing fasts.
I think the starvation mode idea is why people ease themselves in and (especially) out of fasts.
It doesn't actually matter if your body enters starvation mode or not.
I did read more on the effects of fasting and how it works but I've forgotten it. I'm sure someone with more knowledge on the topic will jump in though!

Why can't you get enough calories?
My smoothies are about 500 calories.
Juice feasts are different, in my opinion, because you are putting nutrients straight into your blood. The body just gobbles them up and begins to heal itself. Still a person should be able to 1200 calories of juice in them a day on a feast. Carrot and orange juice is especially high in calories!

My smoothies are about 380 cal. 5 cups of spinach and 3 cups of fresh orange juice. So good.

If it's a green smoothie I start with a pound of organic baby spinach. Then I add frozen pineapple, frozen mango and frozen peaches. I have looked at the calories on the packages of spinach, pineapple, mango and peaches and it's well over 500 calories.
If it's a cacao shake (or I call it a chocolate malt) it is more like 800 calories. It has a couple of cups of fresh coconut water, 5 frozen bananas, cacao, carob, lucuma, maca, vanilla and agave.

If this can give you faith, you can go on a 40 days water fast, lol..... They study people doing a long fast this way and their protein level were almost the same and nutrients. Don't get me wrong, you cannot just go on a water fast this way, without first doing 100% raw food, researching, practicing short fast such 1 day, 3 days and 7 days.. It cans be dangerous if you don't do this right way such taking a supplement with that. It needs to be 100% pure water. You need to meet the criteria (some condition aren't recommended). OR IT CANS BE very safe if you do this right and brake your fast right. I researched for two years before taking the plunge and my last fast was a 16 days of water fast. I only gain benefit after the fasting.
Green smoothie is rich of amino acid which are what you need for your body to make the best protein for you. Eating one tomato or one apple has all the essential amino acid for your body. If you do a juice fast or green smoothie fast, it is so safe for your body not to count that you will nourish your body with life force. Just expect benefit and great result. You could go to extreme detox depending how have been your life style before and your choices, or it could be not too bad. Either way, take the plunge, have faith and expect wonderful result.

p.s I use to use frozen fruits and fresh fruits with my smoothie. Now, i only use fresh fruits. Frozen food is also armful to your body but if this help you to transition, it will be ok. Dr. Graham discovered that frozen food is a nuisance to B12 in your intestine. I buy couple pack of mango from Costco and i let them ripe before i put them in the fridge. You know when they are ready, when you can smell the sweet or mango smell. I am not a doctor, please research.

You can develop to a stage where under consuming calories will be sustainable behaviour, because the ultimate truth is, calories are an antiquated concept...it's a man made understanding that isn't universal law. The key is for a person to be able to access the cosmic vibrations of sound and light, but not all people are ready to do this. You will find that if you are sincere and ready and full (not completely full, but you still must have these qualities in some degree in this illusionary life that we call `real life' ) of unconditional love and compassion and have less attraction to the physical, you will be able to live on green juices and sustain weight, but be careful, most people aren't ready for such a thing.
Many animals in the wild live off grass and don
't consume alot of calories for the size they are and the energy they put out, so obviously the calories v's energy output shows mankind's typical theories are amiss here.
You need to be in touch with your inner self to be able to do this properly and minimise physical distractions and negative vibrations that plague us in everyday life. lf you don't believe, you aren't ready. lt take small steps to be able to work up to this. Many people get sick trying to do this because they don't understand because they aren't ready. But when you are ready to do this, you WILL KNOW.
Try consuming lots of fresh green juices from vegies straight out of the garden. But better still, consume lots of freshly squeezed wheatgrass juice, sunflower green sprout juice, alfalfa juice, kelp, chlorella, blue-green algae, sea vegetables, and other sprouted foods. You will find after a short while that you will be able to live on very little food, that's because the electromagnetic vibrations are sustaining you, not the calories.
Note: if you are trying to live long term on green juice only from store bought vegetables, the long term prospects of health aren't so good unless the being consuming such a lifeless food is highly evolved and is able to feed off cosmic food. But to live off cosmic food, one must realise that the physical life we all live in is only an illusion and not real life at all, it is all man created by our karma. So the key is to minimise our exposure to the physical and live more in the spiritual, so...minimise our distractions like idol chatter, t.v, most music, limit sexual activity, sever our love with materialism, and getting over the emotion involved with living in the physical world and all the other lowly physical stuff we have cluttering our lives. When we are able to see the illusion and clean up, things become alot easier with diet and everything else.
But if you choose to live and believe in the illusion, the rules must be: consuming green foods high in sunlight, amino acids and electromagnetic vibrations. This is as close to cosmic truth as you can get while living in the physical illusion.
If all this means nothing to you, forget about it and just do a short term juice fast instead. *wink*

limit sexual activity
This is completely off topic in regards to the thread, of course (shame on you Mr Raw :D), but sexual activity can actually be extremely beneficial to health, and many believe it to be necessary.
In regards to the question asked, when you consume less calories, your metabolism dramatically slows down and you require far fewer calories then if you were eating more. This is also why many dieters on the SAD diet fail to experience much weight loss (although that's really because the body isn't willing to liberate all of the toxins stored in their fat cells...but that's off topic too).
