I'm pretty sure Colgate and the popular brands are loaded with unnecessary chemicals. So this question might sound naive but there isn't much information out there on a good 'natural' toothpaste :)

Seem to be doing well with either food-grade diatomaceous earth, bentonite clay or, when the fam gets fed up with the pasty, powdery clay stuff, using Eco Dent, which has mintiness. although my kids still complain because it's "salty," but I don't care because they have good check-ups so that's my litmus test.
Anything "natural" that's still kind of conventional usually has glycerin and that prevents remineralization, which you WANT because that's what happens, say, overnight, when your teeth "heal/rest" after eating during the day and re-harden and do what teeth are meant to naturally do.

I was also going to mention the glycerin thing...
I just made my own (mostly raw) toothpaste and it is great, but I can't get my kids to use it...sigh.
I used truly raw coconut oil, mixed with just a pinch of baking soda and a few drops of peppermint essential oil. If you have any kind of gum damage you could also use/use instead some Thieves (an essential oil blend by Young Living).
But you've got to be careful how you use it! You don't want to spit it down the drain because the oil can clog it up. So I start by brushing my teeth and tongue etc with water to get out any real funk/bacteria, then I brush with the coconut oil and swallow it. I suppose you could also spit it into a tissue and throw it out, or spit it outside.....
Man, your teeth feel great.
I also think maybe you could sub the pinch of baking soda with DE. Interesting because I buy DE by the 50-lb bag for my chickens and haven't really tried it yet....
Either way though, I wouldn't use much of the baking soda or the DE because they're quite abrasive....

most days of the week im good with just using a cup of warm water to rinse with several times while brushing , sometimes squeeze lemon into this water
then a few times per week i'll run brush under hot water to make powder stick to it then sprinkle some baking soda on the brush to brush with
and when i do use a tooth paste i brush / rinse first to remove major stuff , then i use tiny dab of paste on tip of brush as were used to using way way too much . only tiny dab needed
in terms of brush cleanth i keep brush in utility room , on a shelf in a coffee cup i fill with water plus either dish soap or peroxide after every brushing . brush sits in that mixture til next day
when i rinse brush and cup off in hot water
i also buy like 30 cheap tooth brushes a year at dollar stores or on sale so i can use new brush every week or two , why not when im only paying 25 to 50 cents per brush

You can simply use a natural soap bar at the health food store. IT will last forever.
I purchased a liquid soap "LIQUID Tooth Soap". I love it.
It is a good idea as mentioned to make it yourself.

Thank you for your responses! I bought some 'natural' toothpaste at Whole Foods(Vitacare) and it looks like it has more ingridients than Colgate. I found out when I got home, and it was disappointing. That's one of the reasons I came here, and I'm glad I did :) Thanks again!

I use food grade hydrogen peroxide and sometimes Weleda's calendula toothpaste. I've heard Neem oil is great for teeth and ordered some a while ago, but what I received was not oil but fowl-smelling brown gloop, lol. I've seen proper Neem oil in the local health food shop though, so I might try that soon! :o)

This is what I use http://www.jason-natural.com/product/078522015109 and I absolutely LOVE it!!! It's the best toothpaste I've ever used and it's worth the extra dollars. And I am not left with bad breath unlike all of the other "healthy" toothpase brands I've used.
