I used to make watermelon juice. At first I only used the red part - yummy! Then the last couple of times I tried it, I put the whole thing in, including rind and seeds. It did not taste very good but I was thinking that it would be more nutritious. Am I right? I am wondering if I juiced a beet or a couple of carrots along with it, if it would compensate for the bitterness of the rind.

I always juice my watermelon with most of the white part of the rind. I do cut of the very slim part of the green. I think it tastes wonderful this way..

Last summer was the first time I tried juicing the rind too - I was so surprised! I thought it would taste bitter, but it didn't.

I'm sorry you found it bitter - maybe it depends on the type of watermelon or something. What would you think of cutting off most of the green and trying that? Just get a nice big slice of melon and cut the rind off the slice. It's very manageable that way.

Melons are a class unto themselves and there's a general 'rule' about them, "Melons - eat them alone or leave them alone." I try to follow that for the most part. When I juice w'melon, I only have melon in there.

I didn't like the rind either. Now I just throw the red part in the blender for a slushie.

You know DebB, I TOTALLY believe in eating watermelons alone too. I freak when I see picnickers having watermelon for dessert after ingesting a hard-too-digest picnic dinner!

However, I believe that when it's juice, and when you combine it with other VERY easy to digest juices, like carrot etc, then it's okay to combine it with other things.....

Oh, and to the OP, I would not juice the very outer green part unless I grew it myself. Even organic stuff can be waxed/coated with some junk in the stores.

Just my thoughts!

That's a very good point Mary Kay about loosening the 'melon rule' when it's been juiced! I'm glad you shared that - thank you!
