^ Really!? I have some in my cupboard! I was once given it to help with migraines (massaging it into your temples was suposed to help somehow).
What is it used for? Maybe I could take advantage of it...

If true, the following:
It may be surprising for you to learn that the naturally occurring saturated fat in coconut oil is actually good for you and provides a number of profound health benefits, such as:
• Improving your heart health.(3)
• Boosting your thyroid. (4)
• Increasing your metabolism.
• Promoting a lean body and weight loss if needed.
• Supporting your immune system. (5)
Coconut oil even benefits your skin when applied topically and has been found to have anti-aging, regenerative effects.

I love it. I crave it sometimes. I generally eat at least a couple teaspoons of it a day and usually eat it off the spoon.
You can use it in recipes that you need to firm up (in the fridge or freezer), like the raw cheesecake, etc. Can't think of any other things at the moment, but I know I've seen heaps of recipes with it in it. I just love it off the spoon and so don't really think about making stuff with it.

I've also read that it can help protect against Alzheimer's also, 4 tbsp. a day I think the study reported.

I use it sparingly in food because the flavour is quite strong but it is useful to set things with as mentioned already. I also eat small amounts from the jar and I have rubbed very small amounts into my skin.
I can believe it boosts metabolism because it's a stimulating moisturiser!

Now I did some fast "research".... and I am NOT saying I agree or disagree, because I really don't know.... but many legitimate websites don't really think all that highly of coconut oil, including the Mayo Clinic website. And a few sites that are popular - though I don't know how medically professional they are - actually give coconut oil very poor "grades". And those that did love it, obviously had a self serving interest in promoting it.

I don't think it's a superfood or all that important. I have a jar that's been in my store cupboard for 8 months and it's still more than half full.

I wanted to add, and this was REALLY FUNNY to me.... one website claimed that coconut oil is becoming SO POPULAR these days because it has less calories than other oils... well, no.... it's 100% fat, so it has the same calories, though when I read further "less calories" to them was FOUR CALORIES per serving, LOL.

I'm a huge fan!!!
I wash my face with it and use it as a skin moisturizer.
I use a teaspoon a day for oil-pulling -- it's whitening and healing my teeth!
I use it in my hair as a conditioner and in place of styling wax or gel.
I couldn't live without it! I have a big jar I keep in the bathroom that's almost gone. I'm going to get another jar soon for the kitchen so I can start using it in dishes. It's supposed to be great in desserts and I want to start adding some to my smoothies too!
I love coconut meat, too......... YUM!

Does it make the skin on your face hot? I find it moisturises really well but makes my face really hot and almost sweaty. After a while it goes down to normal again and the results then are very good. Just wondering about the red/hot/sweating thing.
Thanks

I use coconut oil on the back of my hand. I get a bit uh... obsessive about washing my hands and in the winter the skin cracks and bleeds a bit then itches like crazy. This winter I've been using small amounts of coconut oil to help moisturize and heal the cracking. For the most part it does really well though if it gets too bad I use a zinc cream instead.
I'll have to pay closer attention to how my skin feels after I use it next time. It's such a small area I usually just put it on and forget about it. But now that I think about it, I seem to remember it did make my hand feel a bit warm for a while. Interesting...

It doesn't make my skin hot -- but I'm very fair and I notice my skin momentarily turns red when I first put it on! I kind of LOVE that it does that -- but I thought it only happened to ME hahahahhaaa!!
I use the hot washcloth-steaming method and I have to say that when I'm done, my face glows and my pores look smaller..... it's like getting a facial!

I love to use coconut oil as a facial moisturizer. I put it on at night after washing my face. I've never noticed any hot or red reaction.
Qwerty, how are you using it to make your teeth whiter? Do you use it instead of toothpaste?
Coconut oil is good in smoothies too, but I don't do that too often because I fear I am eating too much fat already!

Qwerty, how are you using it to make your teeth whiter? Do you use it instead of toothpaste?
It's a wonderful ayurvedic practice called oil-pulling. You swish it around in your mouth for 15-20 minutes in the morning before you eat anything.... it whitens and strengthens teeth, draws out infections, in some cases regrows receeded gums and even cavities and chipped teeth!
If you do a search on this site, you'll see lots of threads about it!
I LOOOOOVE it -- a friend just asked me how I got my teeth so white!

l personally think that coconut oil would be best had with either chia seed greens (sprouted chia seed) or sunflower greens (sprouted sunflower seeds on soil) because these two foods have almost all the omega 3 & 6's completely broken down by the fat splitting enzymes, so the two plants will be able to help the body break down the highly concentrated and acidic coconut oil, + even take a digestive enzyme high in fat splitting enzymes to help further. So if you have food high in certain concentrates, always make a match by consuming a predigested form of that concentrate so it helps take the strain off the body. Eg, high concentrated acidic fats = having alkaline sprouts high in predigested fats. high concentrated starch = having alkaline sprouts high in predigested starches via carbs (eg, wheatgrass). And we now do know that food enzymes are very important, because new science has discovered (via tagging therapy) that food enzymes can survive the stomach acids and be found in the feces, but not only that, the mouth also absorbs them and probably other places. Us raw fooders always knew that raw was best, now we have the science to prove it, and now science has to take us seriously for the first time ever.
Please try and use coconut oil very sparingly if you insist on having it. Over the last 19 years Brian Clement has been observing people who eat large amounts of coconut oil (hundreds of people), and 100% of all of these people have high cholesterol problems. Brian suggests it is o.k for people free of liver and gallbladder problems to consume it in moderation (a tablespoon a day 4 or 5 times a week), but says that people with liver and gallbladder problems should definitely keep it very minimal.
Brian's commentary on coconut oil is from 4:14 - 5:18 on the link below:

True. Definitely good to look into. Glad I only have a couple teaspoons rather than a couple tablespoons, just to make sure. :) I had blood work done about 2 months ago and my cholesterol was 118, but I am concerned about cholesterol due to family history.
I will check that link out and do some research. Thanks for the info, Mr. Raw. :)
I used to do oil pulling and then got lazy. I've done it with both olive oil and coconut oil. The coconut oil feels lighter to me overall. I need to start back up.
I also need to start using it at night again as a moisturizer. I got lazy with that, too. I found when I used it in the morning, my face felt oily and shiny and I feel like I have to wipe my face (even with a little bit) all the time. I actually now wonder if it is from perspiring (glowing because we women aren't supposed to sweat, lol). Glad you guys mentioned that!

And then we have Dr. Joseph Mercola who says coconut oil is incredibly healthy (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mercola/coconut-oil-benefits_b_821453.html) and you should use it in your diet. Note references at the bottom of the article. Also see this article on coconut oil and Alzheimers (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/12/13/can-this-natural-food-cure-or-prevent-alzheimers.aspx).
One "expert" says one thing, another says the opposite, and both are saying something completely different than the government (who I generally disregard anyhow but that's a whole different topic). Guess that's what makes life interesting.
And yes, I know Mercola advocates eating animal based foods (responsibly) too but that doesn't automatically discount everything he says. Keep researching all sources of nutritional information as we as a human race still don't know everything (or even close to) about the subject!

Thanks for the info on oil pulling Querty!
Never heard of that before but ive gone and done some reading and will give it a go shortly.

I have sensitive skin and not only can I wash my face with coconut oil, I can moisturize withit and leave it on all day and all night with no breakouts!
My skin LOVES IT..... I never thought I'd actually be washing my face with oil! I use the hot washcloth-steaming method and my face isn't greasy at all from it -- quite the opposite, I can't do it every day because it can make my face too dry!
I think it's an individual thing, but I'd definitely recommend trying it and seeing how your skin reacts to it. I've thrown away all my skin products and only use coconut oil now for everything!

Adobegirl,
I'd be concerned with such a low total cholesterol -- 118. Anything below 150 and there may be a danger of hormonal imbalances due to not enough cholesterol to help your body make hormones.
Mr Raw, I think those are really good thoughts about the chia and sunflower greens. I already grow and consume the sunnie greens, but not the chia greens.....Good idea.
Also, re the digestive enzymes along with it, this also sounds good, but isn't fat digested in the intestine, therefore the digestive enzymes may? be best as enteric ones, while ingesting the coconut oil?
Again, I'm considering doing a coconut oil cleanse of sorts....Now you've got me thinking I should be scientific about it...get blood testing before, during and after....Hmmmm.

Thank you so much for your information. I periodically get checked by my herbalist because I am under so much stress that he is concerned about my health. He has started checking me every month to try to get everything balanced. Unfortunately stress (and stress I can't seem to get out from under due to other people) really does a number on the body, raw or not (though things definitely are better on raw). :(
Last time he checked, he did see that I do in fact have a hormonal imbalance so it's really interesting that you said that. He did not say anything about my cholesterol (I can't remember what the other numbers were but the bad was in a good range and the good was a little low). He is having me use a cream called Ostaderm (http://www.helenpensanti.com/prodinfo.asp?number=101A) to help with this. I will definitely ask him when I see him later this month if it is causing some issues with the cholesterol. My cholesterol has always been under 150 for as long as I've had it checked, but I do want to be as healthy as I can while I'm around. He also has put me on some liver cleanse stuff and thyroid stuff since that blood test. Thanks for telling me that. :heart

Oops, after re-reading your post that I wrote, I see I wrote it wrong (however, I think you got the gist of it anyway).
It should read: Anything below 150 and there may be a danger of hormonal imbalances due to not enough cholesterol to help your body make HORMONES (I wrote "cholesterol." )
Best of luck to you Adobegirl. Hope you get to the bottom of it all. High stress often = low progesterone. And with your cholesterol being too low, you have the possibility of diminished progesterone too.
Just some thoughts....`will go and edit my first post to read correctly....

Also, Coconut oil when used as a hair conditioner before shampoo gives your hair shine, strength and volume. Coming out of the hair is also not a problem as it helps your shampoo lather. Just let the shampoo sit for a bit and rinse. All natural soaps made with coconut oil can lather in the ocean which is pretty hard to achieve with commercial soaps.
Also when coconut oil is mixed with certain essential oils they together made an excellent scalp stimulator for hair growth.
I bet it would be good in a pudding recipe to add creaminess.

applying coconut oil to face for those that creates a firery/heat tension and/or flames face up pink or red...i'm only aware of this doing to those who have seb-derm. it's dandruff to the face generaly caused by candia. and some cases of rosacea to which usualy has seb-derm hand in hand.
however those effected by seb-derm and rosacea are usualy okay applying everywhere else on the body besides face and are safe eating coconut oil. i've never heard of a single case not able to use elsewhere.

I'd also like to toss out... unless you are a grade schooler only getting perhaps 2 bucks a week to spend... coconut oil is very cheap!!!! you can buy raw organic of lovely brands for about 6 bucks a bottle. no need to buy the same jar size for double the price.
also coconut oil rids fleas and ticks off of cats and dogs!!! all one has to do is feed it and apply it to their fur. fleas and ticks can not tolerate the smell and they also slip off the fur. i'd imagine if humans apllied more to their skin and hair and ate it often it would rid the tick concern.

Coconut will irritate and dry the skin of a small but substantial percentage of people.
I diligently applied it to tiny cracks on my hands (that were from wearing gloves at work) every night for a good six months and never got any healing or relief. I ended up getting better results from vaseline of all things! sometimes you just got to use what works.
