I have never used one before... I bought the square Nesco one....

What would make a good first thing to dehydrate?

LOL, I do have 10 pounds of bananas...

Yes, and nutritional yeast to make it cheezy if you have any!

(Note nutritional yeast is NOT a raw ingredient.)

I love making banana chips and you there - with all those bananas! Just slice them evenly as you can, so they'll dehydrate pretty much the same and get that dehydrator dehydratin'! ;)

Or if your bananas are really ripe, all nicely brown spotted and you have a food processor - I just made banana crepes 2 days ago. They're like banana fruit leather. I simply processed the bananas, all by themselves, until smooth. I used 1/2 cup pureed banana and spread to about 6" on a teflex-type sheet. Dehydrated most of the day. They were yummy.

question, since I am new to this... can I spray olive oil Pam on these and still be raw?

And dang, I was at the health food store today, and saw nutritional yeast. Didn't know what it was used for, so I didn't buy any.

not sure if that olive oil spray is raw, but it definitely is not a whole food or whole...look at the ingredients. you could always get a spray bottle and put oil in it if you're trying to control how much you use.
Have you transitioned to 100% Raw yet? Because if you have, there is no need to control the oil like you might if you were eating cooked on a diet.

I'll NEVER be 100% raw Juli.... I'm just doing the best that I can. :)

I'm with Deb. Do a bunch of banana chips. You can take them anywhere to munch on! Sweet and crunchy... yummy. :D Then I'd start on other fruits and soaked nuts and soaked sunflower seeds, then some type of raw bread, kale chips... I'm afraid mine would never get shut off if I had one. LOL

With the nutritional yeast, I'd buy only a small amount first. Some people love it, some people can't stand it. And each one tastes different as far as I know. We have Redstar I believe. It's okay but I wouldn't want to use it in a large quantity on something. It's not really cheesy but more nutty in flavor and slightly reminds me of the "fake chicken" flavor of some processed foods like instant Lipton soups.

So, I guess I need to skip the "jerky maker" part of the recipe book, eh?

Also, because I was clueless, I ordered a book off of Amazon on dehydrating. Hopefully it gives me some great ideas... should be here on Wednesday.

Check out the recipes for eggplant bacon, yum!!!

I don't have a mandoline slicer, so I cut my eggplant in thicker slices and call it "eggplant jerky"....... it's SO DELISH!!!!

I also made some VERY decent cookies a few weeks ago -- my first ever dehydrator dessert -- and the ingredients were simply cashews, dates and fresh lemon juice......... they were GOOOOD!!!

I think Qwerty just became my RFT BFF, LOL....

I made the kale chips, and I didn't love them, but I did enjoy them... and I am no fan of kale. I did "cheat", and used organic olive oil PAM, plus salt and pepper. I'm really happy that I can finally eat kale.

I'm curious Papa, have you ever tried raw eggplant? I haven't yet but I'm curious to see what it's like. Especially the eggplant jerky. I don't like cooked eggplant either and I've tried it several different ways. I find it interesting that some things are actually pretty good raw that I couldn't stand cooked, adds great fun to the journey. :)

It's really great as a spicy-sweet kind of jerky snack. Kinda chewy... I love it!
