View Full Version : Can this potentially be the cure? Muscle inflammation and entrapped nerves
Hi all!
I have been a lurker for sometime now. i am desperately seeking guidance, so I thought I would join.
I was about 90 percent raw for a 3 month period during college (4 years ago) and have been a vegetarian since childhood.
About a year ago I was diagnosed with radial tunnel and PIN palsy from repetitive sewing and using my forearm muscles too much. It's gotten so bad now that I am off work for four months while I wait for my husband to come home from deployment so I can get this surgically fixed. Today, I learned there are a lot of risks with this surgery due to it's close proximity to the radial nerve. There is also only a 40 percent success rate.
I am currently around 40 pounds over weight and am wondering if a raw diet and weight loss can possibly cure my arm? No matter how much I rest, my forearm muscles are always tight. I've had my b-vitamins, vitamin d, iron and even my skin cartenoids/antioxidant levels checked and all were normal. I've managed to avoid highly narcotic pain pills, but still take a host of other pills for the pain and the depression from the pain.
I would appreciate anyone's input or success stories with muscle inflammation or nerve entrapment disorders. I would also appreciate advice for any other issues that night be causing this.
Thank you in advance :)!
I sent you an email Lynsey :) Big hugs to you!

Fresh ripe fruits (semi acid) rejuvenate your nerve system. Everything is reversible if you give a chance to your body to heal. As long there is life, there is hope. I am not a doctor and you need to research.
Good for you for avoiding theses dangerous substance.
If i was you, i would first go 100% raw food while adding as much fruits in your diet (morning up to lunch), including also green smoothie. When you are ready, then upgrade your diet. When your mind feel happy with raw food, i would do a detox. It might be a good idea to do this now, to help to reset your craving button. I love the approach of simplyraw.ca detox. It is gentle on the body and healing. It won't be enough, you will need to get ready for more deeper cleansing. It took your years to get where you are. Sometime, people see result very fast, and others it is a journey. As you as your start you are there sweet heart and don't give up hope.
I would start with a gentle detox while studying Alissa's DVD. As some point, you will have to eat the nuts in moderation, they over tax your kidney and you so need them to be fully functional to eliminate any acidosis. When your lymph cannot filter or get clogged up, then problems will start to manifes with our body. Ripped semi acid fruits such berries, apples, grapes, oranges, water melon are so healing and amazing. You can consider also to do a fruit fast once you are done integrating raw food in your life style.
All is well and all best for you. Remember that you are worthy to be healthy, radiant, happy and feeling whole. Claim your power back and give yourself permission to be free.
(((((Blessings))))))
p.s When one woman that has M.S. on a wheal chair, took this journey on raw food and finally she did 100% semi acid fruits, she was able to walk after seven months. So you bet that if you give live food to your body, it will rejuvenate. Research for fresh herbs that helps to heal the kidney, unclogg the lymph and rejuvenate your endocrine system. Parsley and dandelion are great, but there are more, just have a look.

try celery and celery juice. Its a natural anti-flammitory.
I went to Whole Foods today and much to my surprise so much more is available in store than my last attempt at going raw.
I found everything on my list;half of which I was expecting to have to buy off Amazon.com.
Thank you for all of the advice! I really appreciate it! I bought a lot of fruits and veggies today, including pineapple, baby spinach, green apple and coconut water to make a green smoothie tomorrow morning!
Thank you again for the advice. I will check back in a week to let you know if I've made progress!
On a separate note Goji berries taste a bit 'brine-y' to me. Are there any recipes that make them taste more pleasant? I want to at least use the ones I bought.

Hey Lyns,
Boy, this is a tricky subject. If you're wondering whether raw foods can potentially help, then the answer is yes. Will a raw diet alone miraculously cure you? It's unlikely, but there are people who have experienced amazing recoveries after radically changing their lifestyles.
I, for one, think it's most important that we find balance within ourselves and think of what we eat as being an integral part of our life philosophy, if you will. I guess what i'm trying to say is that good food, coupled with adequate exercise and rest (but also things like some soul searching and contemplation) can rejuvenate your being from inside out and likely help you greatly both with pain management and depression.
I wish you the best of luck in all your trials. Hugs!

Yeah, this is great news. I noticed also that we have more choice in my town too then when i first went raw in 2004. Raw food is expanding because the demand is there.
Have fun and all the best with this journey!

I'm no expert on your particular disorder but I'm pretty cluey on inflammation. You should avoid sugars as much as you can. Avoid too many bananas as they're highly inflammatory. If you want to have one, mix it with anti-inflammatory foods. Eat lots of paw paw (papaya) as it's anti-inflammatory and healing and is great for digestion. When your arm is inflamed, have some raw garlic or raw ginger. Just chew a tiny piece, it will burn your mouth but do wonders for your arm... usually takes about 20 minutes. Turmeric is also highly anti-inflammatory. You could make some turmeric/ginger tea and sweaten it with a little stevia. I usually add honey but the honey is no good for your condition. Almonds are also very anti-inflammatory so make almond milk. You can make a smoothie with almond milk, papaya, a small banana, vanilla bean or extract and a few drops of stevia (optional). Chamomile, mint and dill will help with tight muscles and will also help you sleep. Coconut water from young coconuts is also very anti-inlammatory but don't have the meat as it causes inflammation. The water may initially cause inflammation because it has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties so if you get some inflammation, it's due to the die off effect. That will disappear over time. Watch out for some seeds as they're very inflammatory too. You can pop into www.nutritiondata.com and check out the Inflammatory Factor (IF) of any food there or add a combination of foods and it tell you the overall IF. If you're going to be transitioning to raw and having non-raw or non vegan food, you can let me know and I'll list some anti-inlammatory foods for you and list the ones to avoid or you can research that yourself (I'm not allowed to discuss it here).
As for the goji berries, I usually soak some over night with a bit of water in the fridge and pop them in the blender with some grapes to make them more palatable. Sometimes I have it like that or mix it with other juices or smoothies.
Cheers and hope you feel better soon :)

Thank you, that is wonderful advice! I started to feel better about two days ago. I meet with my neuro surgeon tomorrow and honestly don't know if I should undergo the surgery now. I still need alieve and my non-narcotic pain pill, but not as many.
It's funny you mention coconut meat and bananas. I ate a ton of coconut butter with raw honey the first day and woke up the next feeling awful.
Thanks again for the advice <3

Thanks Juli :)
Lyns, you're welcome :) One last thing... if you're taking the NSAIDs for the inflammation then take it easy on the natural anti-inflammatories, particularly raw garlic, ginger and turmeric as they're all blood thinning. The turmeric is just as effective as the NSAIDs so you might want to try that instead of the Aleve. At least it's natural and has many other health benefits whereas the NSAIDs cause all sorts of health problems and thins out the lining of your stomach. They can be quite dangerous when taking them for long periods of time. The diet should help you a lot too. I forgot to mention before, stay away from onions as they're very inflammatory, particularly raw onion. Not just normal onions but all the veggies in the onion family... shallots, onions, leaks, chives, scallions etc. For pain, you can add some cayenne pepper to your diet. It's also anti-inflammatory and is a natural pain killer. Cheers and all the best :)

Oh, and you can also try doing a castor oil pack on your arms, that might help too:
http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/dietarytherapy/a/CastorOilPack.htm
You can put some on your arm as well as on your liver. I've done the packs before and they're great for local pain. Not immediately but over time. I've also added the oil, just a bit over my liver after a shower. Not so much where you're oily but rub it in... it will be obsorbed fairly quickly after your warm from a shower or bath.

I read some advice on a knitting forum about cold (icy cold) plunges for pain due to repetitive jobs/hobbies. You get a sink full of cold water and add ice (if you can bear to) and plunge your arms into the cold water for 10-20 seconds. That is long enough and more than 10-20 seconds does not increase the benefit. You do that as many times a day as you can. Once an hour if you can manage it. I can't remember much else about what was posted except that the person who posted it was a health professional of some sort.
I have always washed my hands under the cold tap and I like to think that all these years I have been warding off trouble!
So I would try this alongside the raw diet and see how you go. I hope you get some relief. My mother had a small op for carpel tunnel in her late 40's/early 50's and it has left her permanently weakened in that wrist.

Muscle and/or joint inflammation, exascerbations of conditions like carple tunnel, your condition, thoracic outlet syndrome, arthritis, and a host of auto immune diseases can be triggered by a condition called leaky gut. Leaky gut can be caused by any of the drugs mentioned in this thread. I believe there is a urine test for it and you might want to ask to be tested.
With leaky gut, your dialy foods can quickly become the source of your inflammation. Incompletely digested food proteins leak into the blood stream through a compromised intestinal barrier, deposit in joints and tissue, and are then attacked by your own immune system as invaders.
When my leaky gut was the worst, I had terrible issues with carple tunnel and thoracic outlet impingement (and or sublcavian). Once I discovered the leaky gut, and resulting food sensitivities, eliminated those foods, my arthritis, muscle soreness, trigger finger, carple tunnel, thoracic outlet problems and many other issues began to subside.
