I guess I'm a bit behind the times here. I just read about Monsanto's Neotame artificial sweetener (approved by the FDA in 2002 with no real studies done on safety) that is made by combining Aspartame with 3-dimethylbutyl, which is on the EPA's list of most hazardous chemicals. It's apparently 30-60 times sweeter than aspartame so very small amounts are used. This puts it under the radar for labeling requirements. The scary thing about this is the 3-dimethylbutyl is that blocks the enzyme that would break the bond between aspartic acid and phenylalanine so they don't have to put warning labels on anything that contains it! They are feeding this crap to animals too. Luckily we don't have to worry about that part other than abuse/neglect of animals (which is a whole other subject).
How much of our organic foods (http://farmwars.info/?p=4897) will end up containing this stuff? We'll be saving for a dehydrator and we will not be buying any processed food, organic or not. We'll simply be making our own so we know what's in our food since we can't trust the government to make sure everything in our food is on that ingredient list. Followup article (http://farmwars.info/?p=4913) to the first one.
