View Full Version : Essential Oils
Hi :) was just wondering, does anyone here use essential oils as part of their lifestyle now they're raw? I'm only just getting into them and I'd love to hear some positives about essential oils. I'm thinking of using them in my homemade skincare "products", well, that's once I figure out how to make natural soap LOL. I look around online for natural skincare products but they often have preservatives and cost a lot. I want something 100% natural, if possible, so that's why I'm trying to make my own.
Any ideas for incorporating oils into skin/haircare? I started adding 2 drops of tea tree oil into my salt-honey face scrub. Also I add a couple drops of lavender oil in with my coconut oil for hair conditioning. Has anyone come up with any yummy ideas? :D
Have you ever smelled peppermint oil, orange oil, red raspberry oil (which I didn't know existed until just now)? Do they smell good? Haha :)

My understanding is that red raspberry oil is a carrier oil, not an essential oil. I've got what I use on my Bodacious Living site. Some of my favorites are peppermint, lavender, sweet orange, lemon. I use them in my bodywork business, in my drinking water; bath water and just neat on my skin to assist in memory, concentration, sleep, etc.

Amii,
I studied aromatherapy extensively in college (2 semesters of a class focused solely on essential oils) and have to say that essential oils are wonderful yet powerful. Some essential oils are toxic and should never be used, some should not come into contact with the skin, some are mucous membrane irritants and should therefore never be used on the face or in the bath (unless you don't mind your genitals burning!) and there are many more factors to consider. A 2% concentration in a carrier oil such as almond or grapeseed is a safe concentration for safe oils, while lavender is so gentle that it can be used without dilution. Lavender is known to heal sunburns like magic. I use it every summer for that purpose.
Here is a good website for information: http://www.aromaweb.com/essentialoils/default.asp
I hope you find something you really love! I use essential oils both in my face wash and as a facial moisturizer. :) And in massage and meditation as well.

I thought they are not good for your skin and you need not to use them either way.

Thank you for the link thenewamanda! I'm interested in essential oils, but I know very little about them. I'm impressed that you've had 2 semesters about them in college! Wow!

Hello Amii,
My Husband and I love to use essential oils in our raw food recipes. One of my favorites is our raw food apple pie with lemon essential oil... here is our blog with the recipe: http://www.doterrahealthtruth.blogspot.com/2011/11/raw-apple-pie-recipe.html#.TzTQAhvlmjg

I've made a hair conditioner spray and then use another mix for aftershave moisturizer. Ive also just added herb to oils for another version of facial moisturizer.I think rev mentioned rubbing on the temples. I employed that with relaxing scents, one which was called grey matter batter during air travel (prone to motion sickness). I felt it did help take the edge off my tensiion or nervousness regarding the rough air.
