so, does soaking it make it more digestible? I see all these recipes for crackers with whole flax seed and it scares me. My mom always said that I should never eat whole flax seeds!!
I know that soaking nuts wakes up the enzymes and makes it more digestible so I'm just assuming it's the same with flax...or hoping...

I think that it works more like a super broom. A lot of fiber. It is not that it is dangerous, I think any unchewed or unground seeds will just come out the same way they went in. I think some have said that they get constipated if they eat to many flax crackers. Would have to do a banana search.
I mostly grind mine before using. I do make crackers with some whole seeds. Never bothered me in any way. I really like them.

If you don't want to grind seeds then look into chia seeds - also super high in Omega 3's - and, from what I've read, you don't need to grind them to get the benefits. I started buying chia seeds a few months ago and I like them better than flax, they have less of a "flavor" and are more versatile.

When I make flax crackers, I soak the flax seeds and then blend it up with the water and it makes a paste kind of liquid (and breaks up the flax seeds) and I dehydrate that (with spices or at least salt). I'm not as fond of whole seed flax seed crackers as I am this way. I don't think you get all the goodness flax seed has if not been broken up, but I don't think it would hurt you. :)

I use both. If you sprout Quinoa and make flax crackers. You will see it all on the other end. :)
I usually mix both in my crackers.

don't be scared. You can't digest the structure of plants (fibre) but you aren't scared to eat plants are you.

I make flax crackers using whole unground flax seeds. I don't blend them or do anything to them other than soak them for a few hours. Then I add juice pulp and spices, spread out on sheets and dehydrate.
I eat these just about every day and I've never had any kind of reaction to them.

Nope!
Whole flax seeds will pass right through you. You need to grind them to get to the good stuff and digest them!
I've often wondered if the flax crackers I make end up being calorie free! Food for thought.. (I know we don't count calories). Just wonderin'....

I haven't been successful making flax seed crackers. They never came out crisp enough plus I found the whole seeds got stuck in between my teeth. I grind golden flax seed in a coffee grinder every morning and add it to my green smoothie. I will try grinding them after the soaking as the other person suggested and see if they turn out any better in the dehydrator.

You soak them to get them to release their mucilage which helps bind dehydrated crackers, breads, wraps, etc. After you soak them you will notice that they are slimy, this helps to bind those items. To get to ALL the good stuff in them, though, you need to grind them up!

I can't believe I've waited so long to make these simple treats! I tried blending these after soaking and my vitamix died after about 30 seconds!!! I've only had it a year! I guess it was too thick. I just poured the mixture onto parchment and put it in the d. I thought after the vitamix cooled down a bit, it'd be back in business, but 24 hrs later, it's still down :( Guess I'll have to go through the hassel of trying to get it repaired. For the crackers, I just added about 3 tablespoons of left over marinara for flavoring and they turned out great. On the positive side, they digest very well.

Yeah, you can eat the whole flax seeds for fiber if you want, but you're missing out on all their other nutrients. Grinding works well, and you can also sprout them and eat or juice the greens.

I tried! But, I failed. At any rate, I let my teeth do the grinding this time. Btw, excellent customer service from vitamix. Emailed me a return shipping label and it is packed, ready to get repaired. It will take up to 2 weeks, though.

Grrrrrrrrrrr........... so sorry to hear your blender's out of commission.
Hopefully they'll have it back to you sooner rather than later! Do you have a back-up blender?

Thx! I wish I had a backup, but it died before I bought my vitamix. Perhaps my sis will let me borrow her ninja for a couple weeks. I'm gonna pass goodwill on the way to fedex, so I'll see if I can find any hidden treasures.
