Does the frequent fasting lower the metabolism further?

Have you noticed any weight gain after the initial 30 or longer fast?

Longest I fasted was 13 days. I did gain weight back but I never gained all of it back so my metabolism obviously improved slightly. Other times I broke the fast badly and ended up bigger so with a slower metabolism.

It does, but you have to control and adjust the way you transition from fasting to eating again.

I agree with Seed.

Fasting is not a proper solution for weight loss. It is however a fact that not all of your burned fat returns when you switch back to solid food but lowering the metabolism too much will eventually make you weak and once you return to solid food, you will feel that you want more and more just to make yourself feel stronger which eventually make you fat.

For myself, and many others I've heard, exercise while juice fasting helps to increase metabolism during an extended fast. Funny thing I can't help but move by body while on a juice fast because I have SO much energy! Another thing with long fasts (so I've read somewhere but don't hold me to it) the cleaner your body gets and the better your metabolism will function. Anyone else hear this?

Your liver is responsible for eliminating/burning the fat stored in your body, and also in charge of detoxifying everything that enters your body (from food, water, air pollution, etc.). Because of this, almost everyone's liver is clogged and overloaded with the toxins we are putting into our bodies on a daily basis, and so you cannot lose fat easily. The major reason your body stores fat is not because of excessive calorie intake (in a healthy body, your metabolism would regulate itself to burn of any extra you ate, or slow down if you don't eat enough), but because you actually store toxins in your fat cells in order to prevent them from killing you when your liver and other elimination organs are overburdened. This is why so many people lose lots of weight when they do cleanses. I do not advocate water fasting, but juice fasting is great for detoxifying your body while still providing optimal nutrition. Your body is given the rest it needs to break down your fat cells and be able to deal with the toxins that were stored in their. A clean body is a healthy body is a fit body.

An important point is that people who fast or attempt to lose weight on the SAD often lose far more muscle mass then fat; this is because their body is actually choosing to break down the muscle instead of the fat, because burning their fat cells would result in a toxic overload that would kill them.

Excellent information! Thanks!

I did three long water fast and i maintain my normal weight for my size. This is all depend of what you eat afterward.
Fasting upgrade your body not only water fasting, but fasting. I am not a doctor but i do know that it repairs and rebuilt.

I'm pretty sure your metabolism slows down when fasting. (I am juice feasting at the moment, which is like a light version of a fast.) According to what I've read recently, slow metabolism is actually healthier than a fast one, as your body can make better use of nutrients. It will, however, make better use of unhealthy food, too, thus you can gain weight more easily when your body's metabolism slows down.

David Wolf says that his body is in such good balance that he doesn't lose any weight when fasting anymore. I am at my ideal weight now and haven't lost weight in the last week while juice feasting. But I think I get enough calories from the juices.

Tonya Zavasta has a good article on this on her blog (and more info in her book - I can dig out info from the book for you if you need it)...

"First let us consider: Is it good or bad to have a slow metabolism? It depends on why it is slow! Is your metabolism slow due to deterioration of your faculties and inefficiency of body processes? Then…it is bad. Very bad. Or could it be you had something to do with it? You slowed it down intelligently and intentionally because your body is so clean and tuned that you gradually trained it to thrive on fewer calories (less food). That is very good."
