I was raw for 3 yrs before I discovered green smoothies – this happened a week ago… and it’s been somewhat of a revolution (or is that revelation?)! I always felt good on raw, but never as ENERGISED as I expected I should. Well, this week I’ve been going off on green smoothies (possibly too much so, but things will settle in time!) and my NRG is sky-high. This chlorophyll-thing (and all else greens have to offer) is not exaggerated. It was clearly what my body was craving.
So… why did it take me 3 years to discover green smoothies? I went raw after meeting 2 pure fruitarians here in South Africa and was inspired by their natural lifestyle and glowing health. I had never bothered connecting to the Internet etc to network with other raw-fooders – I was just content to do raw quietly by myself, knowing it was natural and good. Also, rawfood-ism isn’t big in South Africa… yet (so if there are any out there, please get in touch!!).
So, I am busy spooning up a banana, parsley and spinach smoothie and thinking: This is seriously yummy. And my body is going: nice one, Murray.
Thank you, precious Earth. And you too, Baba, my dear Friend. And of course, all of you out there for keeping this great board rolling.

I'm reading "Green for Life" by Victoria Boutenko... yes, it's true, and you probably can't overdo them. She says you should have up to 2 pounds of greens per day in your smoothies. I just today actually, am upping my intake from 1 smoothie (using usually about 5 oz of greens) to 2, so I'm gettin' there!

I'm sure TimmyC will chime in. He's a big green smoothie advocate!

But to anyone who hasn't tried them... seriously, when you drink them (fruit and greens mixed, I add about a cup of water and some ice too) they just go down so easy! You KNOW your body is diggin' it!

And don't kid yourself if you think "I eat a big salad" cuz #1 it would take you forever to eat this many greens, and #2 you probably don't have the patience to chew enough to release as many nutrients from your greens as when you vitamix or blenderize it :)

I have this book on order too, I've bought so many of Victoria Boutenko's dvd. + books but missed this one. Just love the way she or her kids decorate the box when it arrives, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :p

I'm not shy of green juice's for all the nutrient packed chlorophyll , for me it's an instant feeling of uphoria. It really does work.

The only smoothie i've tried has been spinach and banana, I hope there's a few recipes. I don't really like to mix my fruit and veg all the time, but sometimes I want tasty... And green juice isn't that!

I just made a berry banana and spinach smoothie as suggested in another thread. Wow. I can't taste the spinach. I really like spinach. Earler today I wrapped several leaves of spinach around an almond. Yum.

Two questions-What is NRG? Why does the addition of greens in a smoothie up your energy? Tying energy I realize what NRG is. LOL. Anyway-I eat bunches of spinach in salads. Will adding the same amount in a smoothie really help my energy?-Nina

GlimR, SamL, Vegggeeemom, I just finished the book today, wow! Great stuff!

SamL, the way Victoria explains it, greens are different from veggies... with fruit - mix away!

And I was thinking, there's so many combinations in the recipes, I guess what ever you have on hand goes! Tonight I'm drinking Kale with an apple, an orange, juice of a lemon and a bunch of strawberries. Mmm, mmm, mmmmmm!!!

Green smoothies are almost addicting, because they make me feel so good. I'm almost wondering if I should up my smoothie portions from 32 oz to 64 as I've been kind of down the last week or so. I'm not at two pounds of kale a day.........that would be rediculous IMHO....it would be about an entire plastic grocery bag stuffed with kale...I seriously couldn't eat that much. I don't know how any stomach could eat it. That doesn't mean that I don't use a lot. I use 5-7 huge leafs of Kale, or a couple of handfuls of huge pieces of broccoli (big handfuls) in my smoothies. I feel great after drinking them mmmm...my favorite is 2 green apples and kale.

So I'm a big advocate of green!

I am a Green Drink Advocate. If someone would of told me I could live on Green drinks I would of said never ! Wrong..I can.

I buy only the Organic (prefer the flat) Kale and it is the base to all my drinks. I use a bunch each day...and cucmber or celery...a head of Romaine, Apple and Lemon, Ginger. Sometimes I add an oddball thing if it is seeing the end of its days and must be used....red cabbage, tomato whatever !!

Tomorrow is Wed...green drink fast day. I will weight train so I will add hemp powder to a few of them.

The energy from them is awesome !

Question-
I have always had my green smoothie in the morning before but last night I had one for dinner w/pineapple, mango, banana, spinach and parsley. I was so tired a couple of hours later I couldn't keep my eyes open. I woke up six times last night and couldn't sleep, was restless. Do you think that had anything to do with the smoothie, sugar in the fruit, etc...?

Sounds like a Blood Sugar Crash to me, tired after food then waking up hours after going to sleep. Everyone is different but yes I would have a crash if I ate sweet fruit in my Greens. So greens at night would be best, IMO, sans the fruit.

I food combine and do not eat fruit with anything. My only exception is a small apple in the moring green drink. Another suggestion is to use the low sugar fruits..like pear and spinach or kale and apple.

I think there is a thread on here that suggests a 60%/40% mixture. Not sure if that was from Arky or MAK, but I believe one of them told me about it.

That is 60% greens to 40% fruit.

Actually, according to the http://www.rawfamily.com site the 60:40 recommendation is fruit:greens. But if people like it the other way around that's good too.
