View Full Version : What percent am I???
Okay, weird question.
What percent of raw food am I consuming?? I hear people are 80%, 90% etc...
The only cooked/un raw food I consume are about 7-12 ounces of steamed veggies at lunch and dinner. The rest of my diet is raw fruits , all veggies, some roots etc, leafy greens, flax and hemp oils some soaked almonds and 2-3c. of some veggie juice with lemon. I am no light eater either---I eat 4-6 times a day and good healthy meals which maintain my 5'3" at about 110-115lbs.
Thanks---

I really think no one really knows. The percentages are just guesses. Someone may actually be 100% one day; a different per cent another ~ does it really matter? Not to me.
Actually to me it's like ~ either you're pregnant or you ain't. That one is working/playing towards going total is commendable in and of itself.

Hey Rev... so.. when was your last EPT?
----------------------------> runs
Well then I guess I am confused,,,if the goal is 100% raw...then percentages are important to me in the sense of keeping track where I am in my journals etc... I do not want to be raw one day then not the next because I will not truly know the gains from being 100% raw. I hope I am making sense. I am basically trying to figure out my percentage to answer ?'s when asked and how to track my progress. There are also books that highlight benefits/disadvantages of 75-85-90-95% raw ~so again I am just trying to figure out where I am personally on my journey.

You can figure out your percentages pretty easliy. For example if at dinner, 1/3 of your meal was cooked, and you ate raw the rest of the day (3 meals) then you ate 1/9th cooked. Thus you would be 89% raw. If you are eating cooked food twice a day, then it sounds like you are at a great 80%. Perhaps a little higher since you eat a lot of raw snacks & juice too.. it is not something overly important, but its good to keep in mind when working on eating a high raw diet.
If it is working for you awesome! Any percentage raw is a good percentage. :)

Thank you for actually answering my ? It was important to me. Technically I know it does not matter but I am really trying to get to 100% consistently but I swing back to my steamed veggies at nighttime. Man I miss the summer heat!!:)

Well it is easier to say "high raw". There are so many different ways to define a percentage and everyone does it differently, it may not be worth it to try.
Some people define it calorically. How many non-raw calories? How many raw calories?
Some people define it by volume. How many cups of raw vs. cooked?
Some by meals.
Some by size.
Then what if you think you are 100% but you inadvertantly lick a spoon when you were preparing food for your family?
What if you used honey but later found it it was heated?
What if you used a spice and realized it wasn't fresh or raw?
How are you going to calculate that from your 100%?
It can just get so confusing, it's better to say you are all raw, high raw, or mostly raw.

This is how I did it, when I was trying to justify my non-rawness, as more rawness LOL
I would look at my total consumed in a week, I figured I ate on average 28 meals a week, give or take, so I said 30, just to keep it simple, with snacks and all, then I took how many cans of black olives, or whatever I was eating that was not raw. (basically it was probably canned black olives, I was certainly addicted to those little guys, and easy to justify too. being olives and all)
So, i figure if I ate 30 meals (on average 3 cups per meal) about 100 cups per week, and one can of black olives is about 1 cup, that was about 1% non-raw.
But if I ate 1 can of black olives each day, that was 7 cans out of 30 meals, hummmmm not quite so good, and a little harder to hide -- even to myself.
What you choose to eat is the easiest choice you can make in your life, it is a given, it is natural, it's not like which stock to buy, it is easy, just pick the raw, it is that simple.
So, when trying to figure out how much raw and cooked, I'd go by total meals in a week, based on volume.
But that's just me, when I'm trying to justify my non-raw choices, which aren't actually choices, they are addiction reactions.

Now about the warm veggies. Instead of steaming them, have you tried placing them in either warm water to warm, (not what I do, but I hear it works) or dehydrating them to warm and soften, they are excellent when marinated in olive oil and some garlic (if you like it) and some braggs, or nama shoyu, or just some celery sprinkles, etc.
You might really like it, and it would be totally raw.
Sharon,
Thanks for your input--it makes sense.. I weigh and measure my foods so I would go by volume and what amounts for that day was raw..since the amounts are the same almost daily...(ex- 2 apples 2TBSP hemp oil etc etc...)

I think the hot water idea is good for some--personally I am a mushy food addict and liek things soft. I am getting a dehydrator for Xmas so in the meanwhile I am stuck. Unless I put the veggies in the oven on low with the door open--someone told me to do that???
As for marinading any other suggestions besides saltier things I am sensitive to most even apple cider vinegar kills me. ?? That could be helpful esp for green beans and carrots which i love and raw baby spinach?
Thanks

You could marinate in the juices of other fruits and veggies. I love making "sauces" with tomatoes and mixing in other fun tastes. I just discovered the awesome consistency of blended avocado last night!!! I had so much fun experimenting! I made chocolate pudding with some carob powder and other fruits. If you like "mushy" sort of foods try chopping or blending some of your favorite tastes! Keep in mind that you balance sweet/sour/salty/bitter - I think it was in V. Boutenko's book 12 Steps to Raw foods that I read that.
Also, one of my favorite "mushy" meals is Spanish Rice - the recipe is on this pdf document from Hallelujah Acres -
http://www.hacres.com/diet/articles/Transitioning.pdf
Back to the original post, HA says that eating all raw all day and then eating a cooked vegan dinner is 85% raw. They advocate keeping the 15% cooked but Alissa and the Boutenkos have it right when they say 100% is the way to go!!!!
THANKS FOR THE "MUSHY" MEALS IDEA. I OFTEN BLEND RAW CAULIFLOWER, AVOCADO, CILANTRO AND LEMON WITH A DROP OIL...IT IS DELISH!!! ALONE OR ONA BED OF LETTUCES WITH SOME WATER ADDED TO SOFTEN IT UP A BIT. (Opps i just realized i am in all caps--sorry--not yeliing..):)
As I am sensitive to sugar I would not use carob but I will look into the Spanish rice...:)
I KNOW 100% is best--I just crave warmer foods in the winter---and without my dehydrator yet it is challenging....along with my laziness!!
