If this has been asked before, please forgive me! I promise to make better use of the search function! I want to start a water fast this coming weekend and have hypoglycemia. Is water fasting safe for people with blood sugar issues? Have any diabetics or hypoglycemics done a water fast with no complications? I only want to do a three day fast and transition into orange juice for 20 days, then go into smoothies for a week. Are there any precautions I should take first?

Both my parents are diabetics, and I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending a water fast to them. A juice fast I think would be great, lots of smoothies perhaps, but I don't think just water. For any diabetic the most important thing I can recommend when experimenting with diet is to check blood sugar frequently to make sure any detox feeling and hypoglycemic situations don't get mixed up. I think to be safe consultation from a nutritionist experienced with fasting diabetics would be a good idea.
I just watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead (http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/) and I highly recommend it. In the movie two people go through 60 day juice fasts with incredible success.

I would start the other way around to get your body used to it a little better. Work your way to water fasting. At lease with smoothies or juice you can maintain your sugar. Maybe mix a little at the beginning if you feel week and sick with water drink a little juice until you get more comfortable.

Sadly, i read this isn't recommended if you have your condition.
What i suggest is to go by stepping stone. Meaning first 100% raw food, then a detox perhaps with greens and fruits, then fruit fast and then maybe one day water fast down the road, then 3 days water fast and when you are ready 1 week water fast. Once you get to do a fruit fast (acid and semi-acid fruits), it will help you in so many ways.
I am not a doctor, please research.

I've done several water fasts which I've found to be pretty helpful. However, if you have blood sugar issues, I'd definitely check with your doc first. I could be wrong, but it seems like juice fasting could also be dangerous for someone with blood sugar issues (big spikes of sugar every time you drink juice). I'd say the safest way would be to follow a simple raw diet with lots of greens & veggies, but if you're insistent on a water and then juice fast, at least check with your doc first to be sure it's safe.

Thank you all for your input. I think I am going to just do raw and see where that takes me. Maybe a semi fast down the road. Michigan Roman, thank you! I am going to read those links when I have time. :)

Please research before going to fear about fruits. Many diabetes condition and high blood sugar condition has been reverse with fruits. White sugar, cook sugar from food is the one that you need to have fear about. High concentrate process fat isn't a great news either. Fresh ripe fruits heal and help to restore your organ, nervous system, gland and lymph. Your first goal is to get your lymph moving, having a good GI track, rejuvenating your gland and organs.
Doing 100% raw food is an excellent approach, down the road you will be able to upgrade your diet and you will get there. Without question, once you are ready for a water fast, you will benefit so so much from it. Use only raw gourmet food as a way to transition to raw food, focus your goal to go with as much live and fresh whole food. Juicing will also be beneficial for your digestive system. Green juice with fruits is so delicious and beneficial in so many ways. You can introduce gently your body with wheat grass juice.
I wish you all the best and to find all the answers that you are seeking for.
