View Full Version : Are there benefits of eating low-fat on a raw food diet?
Hey all,
I'm curious to hear of people's experience on eating low-fat vs. medium/high-fat raw food diet.
There seems to be plenty written about the harmful effects of fats, even raw fats, when eaten in excess.
I felt much better when live juice fasting than when on a 99% raw diet. I wonder if this was because I overate fats? Has anyone found that excess fat consumption on a raw food diet would cause/ worsen hypoglycemia (blood sugar swings)?
Also, are there other good raw calorie sources than fruits in raw foods, if I do decide to restrict my fat intake to 1/2 avocado a day?
Thanks!

I need the fat. I don't do too many nuts but I love coconut oil and avacados. I feel better when I don't have alot of nuts. Listen to your body. P.S. My sugar is steady. I tend to snack on grapes cuz I can sneak them at work. You have to go by what your body tells you it might take 2weeks or so to figure out which foods make you feel better. I think if you restrict it too much you will be hungry.

anything eaten to excess would cause harm. trying to define excess though seems tricky and will vary from person to person. Plenty of people on here follow low-fat raw and get on with it fine. More probably than those who eat high-fat raw for extended periods.
If you ate half an avo a day then I would suggest that made a diet low fat - depending on the size of the avo!
There is a difference between a low fat diet and a diet where no overt fats are consumed. Which are you most interested in?

I'm interested in eating low-fat raw, which would be 1/2 avocado or a handful of nuts per day. But up to now I have been eating plenty of fats, without worrying, including raw cheese, lots of nuts, olive oil etc.

My "feeling best on raw" times have been when I've been eating 1-2 SMALL avos a day plus olive oil (about a litre every 1 to 2 weeks), very few nuts and nut based foods. I have no idea what the %age is per day or week or month but it works for me. I also eat a lot of fruit and veg as well with no dehydrated foods and lots of water. I add very little salt (in dressings) and find I crave black pepper more.
So I guess that a "perfect day" foodwise would be
1 Piel de Sapo melon
1lb strawberries
1 head romaine
kale
carrot
cucumber
tomato
watercress
1lb tomatoes
1-2 avos
1-2 handfuls of sprouted seeds
some salad dressing made with organic ACV, Raw EVVO, Raw Honey, salt and pepper and maybe some sundried tomatoes.
That would keep me very happy and full. If I wanted to cut down on the fat intake then I think salad dressing would be where it took the cut but I've not had a problem with the level of fats I consume.
I don't like nut pates and cheeses much and usually only have them if making raw sushi and that fails a little because it isn't as light and clean as the traditional Japanese dish which is one of the best things about real sushi.

I think every person's body is different and metabolizes fats, carbs, protiens differently. Maybe experiement with low fat for 2 weeks and maybe medium to high fat the next two weeks to see how you fare? Good fats like coconut oil, nuts and nut butters, olives and avocados may be okay in moderation. Experiment and see how you feel.
Personally speaking, I do much better on a low fat vegan diet. I didn't think I was overeating on the fats earlier on, but for my body and being hypothyroid (sluggish metabolism) I could not maintain my weight and always gained.
Now I can eat 1 avocado per day and call it good. I have a wee bit of oil in a few recipes, but that's limited to perhaps 1 tablespoon every week or so. Works for me.
