View Full Version : Started on raw with strong immune system response. What do I do wrong?
Hello,
I have started raw diet 2 months ago. I am now about 80% raw due to not being able to get normal quality raw food this cold season here. I have two major health issues that I would like to manage. One is Hashimoto Thyroidytis and the other one is undiagnosed problems in my colon. I has run many tests available but no diagnosis was confirmed. After my two months on this diet I definitely feel a big relief in my colon and the way I feel. My immunity got also stronger I felt more energy. My hemoglobin is now up to 128 (it was around 118). My periods got much easier and quicker. My TSH is normal for now.
A week ago I developed a severe tonsillitis, runny nose and cough afterwards. I have had this disease when my immune system was at the very bottom, three years ago. In fact I am having this the 2nd time in the past 18 years at all! My children are sick at this time too. However, I have not been contracting diseases from them since long time ago even when I was not on raw diet. I am very surprised this happened now.
Is there anything I am doing wrong? What are the things I should check? My raw food is not 100% organic, however there is not much choice of organic here. Could it be a reason?
Has anyone had some similar issues?

I got a little sick when I went raw. Yellow mucus was pouring out of my nose. The next thing that happened was that I got clear mucus.
That's what happens when you go raw. You get cleaned out!!!!! =)
Peace

Do you think I am getting cleaned out? I will pray this to be true. I had high concentration of mercury and free radicals in my blood. But I am not very sure if I had much bacteria or viruses. Perhaps I had :) Thank you.
Can increased night sweating be related to cleaning also?

Good reference (http://falconblanco.com/health/crisis.htm) Revell.
Detoxification can be intense. For me my symptoms were cough, lots of mucus, gas, and more. Came with stopping smoking and drinking as well. But it may have just been a cold at the start of my families transition to raw, as they had the same symptoms.

Rejuvelac? No. I have not heard about this before. Do you drink it?
At times I support my immune system with Transfer Factors. They should help to balance my autoimmune reaction also. (When I started taking them my antibodies went from 1300 to 300 in one year. But then for an unknown reason my antibodies went up to 1300 again.) I had also tried different kinds of priobiotics but with little effect.

If you have a problem just with hemoglobin you might try beetroot juice. I think you can mix with apple juice if not tasty. For me it was quite easy to lift hemoglobin by 10 in even four weeks. I did this when I was pregnant. I think at that time I drank 1/2 glass every day or sometimes a glass every second day.
At the moment my colon accepts no juice at all.

I don't know about transfer factors but this is a random result from google, when googling 'autoimmune system raw foods' - maybe helpful:
"Naturopath’s have been aware for a long time, the links between auto-immune diseases, and the incidence of “leaky gut”. Even though the medical profession dismisses leaky gut as a fallacy, science today has proven this condition exists, and that there are many contributing factors to it’s development. [...]
At the congress, they talked about certain foods which contain plant chemicals called saponins and lectins. Saponins have been found to produce pores in the gut lining which increases intestinal permeability, and lectins have been found to cross the gut barrier through binding to specific types of cells. This increased permeability allows large food particles to enter the bloodstream.[...]
Some of the more common autoimmune conditions which are linked to a leaky gut include Allergies, Asthma, Akylosing spondylitis, Autism, Dermatitis, Eczema, Type 1 Diabetes, Crohn’s Disease, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Psoriasis and Rheumatoid Arthritis, although the list includes many more suspected auto-immune conditions.
Saponins and lectins are found in many foods, and if you are suffering from an autoimmune disease, then eliminating these foods whilst doing a gut repair program with your naturopath, is essential.
Tomato
Potato
Soy
Alfalfa
Amaranth
Quinoa
Peanuts
All legumes (lentils, chick peas, mung beans etc)
Grains especially wheat
Dairy contains other damaging proteins"
Again, I don't actually know anything about this topic but I found that googling any health problem with 'raw food' in the end often gives you some good information....
Also, Curezone is quite good for searching through the forums to get information on different health conditions....
http://curezone.com/
Maybe live blood analysis or a visit to a naturopath could tell you whether it is detox or an underlying health issue...
I know that I have leaky gut. No doubt about this. I have a lot of allergies since 2 years old. And I have so many problems with my colon. I have read a lot about the connection between autoimmune conditions and leaky gut. Hopefully this diet will help me to repair it. It is confirmed that I do not have gluten intolerance but despite of this I am trying to avoid wheat due to the leaky gut. I do not eat diary except for sour milk which always helps my colon to calm down.
I do not want to further limit my diet because due to hypothyroidism I cannot eat calciferous vegetables. And it is a very large family. Hopefully some time in the future I will be able to eat all vegetables.
Well, I hope the raw food diet works well for you, sounds like you have achieved a lot of improvements in the last two months already. I'm from Finland, by the way, not that far from Lithuania :) But I live in London now. Let us know how it goes, and good luck!

This survey worries me a bit . This says that raw food diet was good for almost all kinds of conditions except for the hypothyroids. So I am a bit cautious how can it affect me. Let's see.

Waw, this is quite interesting. Once it is a good probiotic, it should help. Do you think it contains gluten? I think it should not since you just drink a liquid.

Also try lots of green juices. It brought my Hgb way up. Eat almonds. Try oranges or other fruits with lots of vitamin C. This should help boost your immune system. As for Rejuvalac I don't like the taste but you might. I just eat greens I was anemic until I started juicing.

I think with hypothyroid you have to be careful with WHAT raw foods you eat.
Also, according to one website hypothyroidism is caused by iodine deficiency. Would supplementing with iodine help? Worth researching unless you already know this. The article I link to below highlights the importance to avoid fluoride:
"Most people don't know that the pituitary gland in our brain, is the master gland that controls the effective functioning of all the other glands. Unfortunately, the pituitary gland soaks up fluoride like a sponge. And when that happens, the pituitary gland stops secreting a hormone known as TSH that stimulates the thyroid gland. At that point, hypothyroidism is inevitable." - Original source:

I'm sure that together with carefully done raw food lifestyle, lots of research, and other healthful practices you will heal everything. But you might have to address things like stress also.
Do you think I am getting cleaned out? I will pray this to be true.
I don't know if this works for everyone but for me a good way to see if I had detox symptoms or something else was to go on a 7-day live juice fast. If it was detox the cleasing symptoms would most likely become more intense (the detox would accelerate). In my case they didn't, I just felt much better and more energetic on the juice fast. So I took that as a sign that there was something in the raw food diet that I was doing wrong at that point. (Still trying to figure this out but now I'm thinking: too much fats, caffeine, sometimes eating too little, not enough sleep.)
Waw, this is quite interesting. Once it is a good probiotic, it should help.
One more thing... Anything that is a fermented food, to my knowledge, is a probiotic (not to say that anything fermented is edible!). So in addition to rejuvelac, you could look into water kefir, kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut etc.
I am starting to understand that perhaps I am just sick. It is not detox. This is because everybody else who had contact with our home got sick in the same way we did. I am still having sore throat, cough, etc. It might be nothing wrong with the diet. If I was not on a diet I might have got sick anyway as everybody did.
Ucat, I am also thinking that since I started this diet I am eating too little. Perhaps I should consume more food. I am loosing weight . For hypothyroids this is very difficult. And my weight was normal before, I do not have a need to loose it. The other reason... It might be that I should stop thinking about this goitrogenic thing and start eating a much wider variety of foods in comparison to what I eat know.

I'm just reading a book which says many vegans have the same problem in the beginning - not eating enough food.
I think the best way is to eat often. And try to have set eating times. I'm still struggling with this, it needs a bit of discipline. Try to also get enough carbs, and not too many fats. I didn't use to think this was important but beginning to realise it is now. It is easy to overeat fats when trying to gain weight (like me) but carbs are the healthier way to go, and you can still get all the calories you need.
And yeah, sounds about right that what you have now is probably a cold, nothing more serious than that :)
I hope the raw food diet keeps working well for you. And I hope you ditch the fluoride toothpaste ;)

i agree all of the above are excellent
Fats? How is it possible to overeat fats with this diet? I think I need more fats in my diet but I cannot figure out where to get them from. So I usually take a table spoon of virgin coconut oil to be sure I get fats. I cannot eat too much nut because my colon starts being angry :)
The problem with me is that I am not used to buy big amounts of foods. Now I have to go to the market more often . So when I am lazy to go, I just start eating too little. Not good :)

Well everyone has a different idea of too much and everyone has a different reaction to the types of fat-based foods but making a general, sweeping statement I would say that it is fairly common for people to eat a lot of nuts when they first start out on this way of eating. You won't be doing that by the sounds of it.
Another raw food staple seems to be avocados. I might eat 2 small ones a day, most days when I'm 100% raw.
You'll get used to different habits. All will be well.

I can't eat many raw olives at one go but they are very nice - in small (say 4) amounts.
I do not like olives too much. But what do you mean by raw olives? You cannot just eat raw olive can you? If you pick it from the tree it is ugly. So usually we eat canned olives. Are they raw? Sorry I do not have knowledge about how they are prepared. Are they naturally fermented or are they marinated?
I eat small amounts of nuts but only very small amounts.

Anything in a can will have been heated. So it isn't raw. Raw olives are not straight off the tree. They have been "cured" but not heated.

How would one know if olives are raw. WF has a beautiful olive bar it looks so inviting. Would any of these be raw. What do I look for to know for sure?

they are very unlikely to be raw. Check out some online sellers of raw olives. Buy some. try some. You'll soon realise that you never ate a raw olive before; the taste is very different from what we are used to in the non raw olive eating world.

I think the only way to know if an olive is raw is to research the company that sells them. This is an example of a raw olive company in the UK:
Oliveology: http://www.oliveology.co.uk/
But there is never 100% guarantee unless you go and see the process yourself. You just have to decide which company you want to trust. But a good start is asking them if the olives have been heated up at any point in the process.
Most packaged food is not raw.
So far the taste of the olives I tried depended completely on what they were cured in: vinegar, oil, spices etc. I guess raw olives generally have less salt in them.
You can also buy them dried, not cured, online. For example:
http://www.gojiking.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=30&products_id=172
...those are supposed to be sun-dried and raw but of course there is no guarantee that the advertising is truthful.
