I hesitated about what forum to post this in, but since it boils down to (or should I say "dehydrates down to"?) preparing raw food, I decided to post it here.

These last months I've been realizing that one or more major disasters are not likely, but certain in the coming years. What is certain is the global economic collapse, that alone could cause riots, starvation, etc. Then there's the solar flare maximum period that's due in 2012-2013 which could cause massive blackouts that could last months or even years as all electric circuits could be fried. So clearly I think it's smart to start preparing to be self sufficient in case of major emergencies which seem certain in the near future.

For water I realized there's no way to store enough water for months so you need a filter that doesn't require external water pressure (in case city water stops working) and can turn the most toxic water into safe drinking water. I remembered a friend told me about the "LifeSaver" bottle, you can fill it with the most disgusting swamp water or sewage waste, and be confident that the water coming out is even far better than any tap water. I'll be looking into buying one of those, they even have a large 5 gallon size jerry can version of it which is probably what I'll end up getting.

Then for food, I realized I already have close to 50 pounds of sprouting seeds, and realized they are probably the best food to stock pile, because 1 tbsp of seeds can become 3 cups of raw complete food in just 3 days, and you can use the water from the filter to grow them. So they are like a miracle "just add water, self-expands by 5000% in just 3 days" food from nature. So I'll probably be buying another 50 pounds or so of various sprouting seeds, that should be enough for a long time.

I thought I'd let others know of my preparedness plans and I think this idea to stockpile sprouting seeds is likely the best food to be stock piling, what else can be prepared with just water, expands 5000%, and is a complete raw living food with every nutrient we need?

Edit: After a quick calculation we would need to eat 19 liters or 5 gallons of sprouts per day if eating only sprouts to get 2000 calories a day, so perhaps it's also smart to stock on things like nuts and seeds to eat or even oils which are the most calorie dense of all foods with 2000 calories per cup (vs. sprouts' 25 calories per cup).

I did that for hurricane season. I had dried fruits nuts and seeds on hand. I have a filter that does not use electricity. Seaweed is a good dried food that lasts.
