Hi,

I am about to buy some mason jars to make pickled/fermented foods. But I hear not to use the metal lids cause they leech stuff into your food. I hear things about BPA and with plastic lids POM/formaldehyde.

they can only leech stuff into the food if the food comes into contact with the metal lid. With the amount of headspace you are meant to leave in a jar, this shouldn't be a problem.

Ok, good. Thanks

What do you prefer the metal or plastic lids? Or those hinged lids that have rubber and ones with glass.

I use the canning flats, but to be honest - my favorite lids are the plastic lids. I use those the most and I don't worry about the BPA issue for these. I have boxes of them! But - they're not always leak proof. If I want that feature, then I use the flats & rings. *Ü*

I use the plastic lid with the flat metal piece in it. this way no leaks. those metal rings are really hard to screw off some times so i dont use them any more.

Well - hey!! What a great idea! That's the one thing I don't care for about the plastic lids is that they're not water tight. Thanks for sharing this, I'll use it all the time now :) (Color me happy to know this). *Ü*
