I found these at my local health food store and I LOVE THEM! they are soo good because it makes me feel like I am eating something crunchy like chips and they are really satisfying... on the website it says they are just dehydrated.. so is it okay to eat these? here is the website (http://www.justtomatoes.com/html/1faqs.html).

also I have another question that is off-topic, last night I was REALLY SICK with my IBS acting up like crazy, I had terrible cramping, bloating, gas and just incredible pain & I didn't know if it could be that I ate too many dates? because the night before I made this pie out of date & coconut (for the crust) and then avocado, banana & coconut for the filling and it was so good that I kind of "pigged out" on it you could say and I think maybe I had too much... I don't know if the dates could cause cramping and bloating like that? i just can't think of what else would have made me in so much discomfort...

Britanie,

Sorry, if it doesn't specifically say "raw" more likely than not they've been dehydrated at high temperatures :(

Also, if your body is not used to large quantities of raw food, it could take a little getting used to, not just the dates, but everything, and that would go for anybody, but my guess is especially someone with your condition. Just kind of take it easy and eat light (smoothies and stuff) and you should be fine... but hopefully someone with more knowledge of IBS can give you better direction.

I made a pie like that once and had a similar reaction to it with my IBS. I believe it is the high concentration of fat without the fiber to help push it through. Also, I will tell you that I try to avoid bananas as much as I can because they make me feel very bloated and crampy. :( I love bananas too!

As far as I have been told, YES, they are okay to eat. I think I have tried every variety and they are all great. SOme of them are dehydreated and some are instantly freeze dried. They are dried at low temps. The rep told me that they qualify as a "raw food". Enjoy!

I wanted to add that as good as they are for a quick snack or maybe something to eat on the run you don't want to eat a ton of them often because they are dehydrated and dehydrated foods require a lot of liquid to digest, also, the sugars are so potent in them because of the fast drying that sometimes large quanitites will make your mouth sore!

so, to clarify, a few every now and then won't hurt. Just not a whole container at a time!

I stand corrected... I didn't research them. I just am so leary of any packaged food. My motto is "when in doubt, don't" whenever something is questionable.

Have you asked the company? I'd like to know myself.

I've heard about staying away from too many bananas and it's SO hard because with all the recipes it's sooo much better with bananas because they make everything so much smoother & yummy. I will try to cut down on them though. Also, do you have any other ideas for crusts with pies besides the dates?? I can't have nuts as of now so it's kind of hard to find any other crust ideas. would raisins or apricots be easier on IBS do you think?
also has your IBS gotten any better while eating raw?

Yay!! Thank you so much, I'm really happy now because I love these things. And I see what you mean about eating too many because they can be a tad bit addicting and actually they make me crave sweets more for some reason but I think they are a good snack to bring with me when I go out because I have low blood sugar so if I don't eat alot through out the day I feel really horrible. So I will try and take it easy on them and not eat the whole entire container! although it would be very easy to do so, hehe

And how much/many of this/these did you eat before the cramping, bloating, etc?

Ummm, I think the operative words here may be "pigged out".

On the other hand what I see, just from what you stated is, you are eating dried foods w/out rehydrating. I understand you like the crunch. Realize this though. WHEN you eat dehydrated foods, your body pulls the fluid it needs to dehydrate them from your body therefore possibly causing dehydration in you which will easily cause cramping and incredible pain.

The gas and the bloating? Too much of a good thing. Maybe you'd like to give this a try ~ chew your food, take time, savor it ~ the taste, the texture, etc. ~ breath.

to answer your second question: food combining! If your tummy is bloated and uncomfortable, this is the sign of poor food combining. Due to your sensitivities, you are even more prone to reactions. So, you might need to simplify your meals and learn about food combining. This should help a lot. For example, it is better to eat one type of fruit at a time, and combining fruit and nuts is not a good idea (it is very hard to digest such a combination). For example, eating bananas will be just fine, as long as you do not combine them with anything else. Not combining means not only not eating two types of food in one meal, but also that there is a good time interval between the meals, so they are not mixed in your tummy. You can still enjoy preparing (mixed) meals, but perhaps, since your tummy is extra sensitive, you could just take more care how you combine the foods.

Best,
Gosia.

I agree with the previous comment..I have IBS and must food combine for peace and great digestion. Also other things can have an affect on digestion. Try eating slowly, chewing well and breathe and connect with your food. A peaceful calm environment does WONDERS for me.
For me, IBS is very triggered by stress and perfection so I try to go easy and eat simpler. The times i do eat over what i REALLY need:) I seem to not be eating as much--new foods tend to excite me especially when they are delicious!!

Good luck....

If you can't eat nuts in a crust, try dehydrated coconut flakes instead of the nuts, this works well in lots of recipes.

And it is MUCH less expensive than nuts. We buy ours already dried at the health food store, and they are sun dried, at 90 to 100 degrees or so they tell me.

I wrote them and here's their reply (along with my original request):

HI,

Just Peaches is freeze dried. The temperature never reaches above 90 degrees in the process.

Thanks,

Melissa C
