Hi! I am new here, and I just bought two young coconuts from the health food store. I am glad I got my book and DVD's, I would have never known how to open them!

Are they an acquired taste? I poured off the liquid, and YUK! It doesn't taste like coconut at all, just kind of sweet and brown. I just wondered if they were "off" or old (they were wrapped in saran and I did just find a green spot of mold on the bottom of the one I opened. On the OUTSIDE though)

Thanks!

Kathy

If the water was brown don't drink it! The water should be clear with a SLIGHT milky appearance to it.. Your coconut might have had a hole in it and things might have started to grow. I have found that if there is mold on the outside, the inside is most often affected too..

I always check for mold on the outside when buying and avoid those ones.

In general they taste different than the typical coconuts you may be use to.
Try blending them, milk and young jelly meat in your blender with some *sweetener* and ice. It tastes more coconutty and delicous that way. My boys love it. You may add a tbsp. of coconut butter/oil if you have it around too.

Or use it in smoothies with other fruits.

Hi Kathy!

EEEEEOOOWWWW brown coconut water! That was a bad one!

The water is to be completely clear - with some white mixed in there sometimes.

LIke Punky said, the water is awesome in anything you want to have a tropical taste.

I let mine sit in the fridge for too long.. that was dumb.. mine began to mold also.
