View Full Version : Biting into something hard in my dulse flakes

I've been getting some dulse from the health food store. It is a popular brand called Maine Coast Sea Vegetables. Anyway, I've gotten this brand of dulse before in the past and never had a problem with it. I get it in flake form because I sprinkle it on salads. But, recently I got some and it seems like every time I put a tablespoon worth on my salad I end up bitting into something really hard, like bitting into a tiny pebble or grain of sand. I finally stopped eating it because it's getting annoying. I know if the sea vegetable is not in flake form they usually warn you on the bag to check for tiny pebbles or shells that could have gotten hidden in the fronds. But, if they are going to sell it in flake form then you would think they would have checked for pebbles or shells themselves before they cut it up into flakes. But I'm clearly bitting into something hard and it's not the dulse. Just wondering if anybody else has had this problem, or if I just got a bad bag.

You just got a bad bag. It happens occasionally, it's impossible to for them to remove every speck of grit from every single bag every single harvest.

there are lots of different levels of quality out there, also they tend to use different drying techniques. I did a lot of research before arriving at a particular brand which I'm happy with.

You don't think Maine Coast is a good brand? It's by far the best I've ever tried.

I just bought a 1.5 oz shaker-type container of Maine Coast dulse granules and the exact same thing happened -- hard little things like grains of sand in my soup!!! Yuck....
