it's best to start on or near the weekend. for the first few days its good to isolate yourself from as much distraction as you can. don't watch tv!
here's a really good site on fasting. it's more on juice fasting opposed to the ultimate cleanse but same concept.
http://www.freedomyou.com/fasting_book/How_To_Stay_On_Your_Fast.htm
i would join you but i finished a 10 day cleanse last month and i only do 2 at the most a year. the uc is wonderful for detoxing and you have such a greater appreciation for healthy raw foods afterwards. good luck!!!

Good Luck! I tried it a couple months ago. I got sick of the lemonade after about 3 days and broke my fast. Also, I didn't do a prefast or anything (I was eating cooked, but vegan, foods). It was my first time fasting and my addiction to cooked food got the better of me :o Although I AM doing a juice fast right now! I've been eating a lot of raw foods, so this fast hasn't been so bad so far :)
Anyway! I'll be fasting along with you, even though it's a different kind of fast! :D

I have been wanting to do a fast, but I don't know what the master cleanse is........
I have 2 friends that just paid something like $200 for some detox diet thing. They don't eat for a few days except for these drinks and take some pills,,, they are losing the weight, but it is so unhealthy.
So where do I find out about the MC??

I usually start out with google. Here's the search I used:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=master+cleanse&btnG=Google+Search
Here's another link I enjoyed reading:
http://therawfoodsite.com/mastercleanse.htm
Random info off the internet:
Master Cleanse:
2 tablespoons FRESH squeezed lemon or lime juice (approx. 1/2 lemon)
2 tablespoons genuine organic maple syrup, Grade B (the darker the better)*
1/10 teaspoon (a small pinch!) cayenne pepper, gradually increase (the more BTUs the better)
300 - 500 ccm (10-14 oz) pure water
In a 300ccm (10-ounce) glass (to allow for 227ccm and mixing room): 2 tablespoons fresh (and organic, if possible) lemon or lime juice (absolutely no canned or frozen juice). 2 tablespoons real (and organic, if possible) grade B or C maple syrup. (Don't use Grade A maple syrup or maple-flavored syrup. They are over-refined, which means that they are mostly refined sugars and lack essential minerals.) A small pinch of cayenne pepper (to taste). Spring or purified water, between room temperature and medium hot (but not cold) fill to 1/4 liter (8 oz). Mix all the ingredients by thoroughly stirring or shaking, and drink. Or, in two 1 liter bottles: Juice of 3 lemons, divided equally between the two bottles (about 85ccm or 3 oz per bottle) An equal quantity of grade B or C maple syrup in each bottle (about 85 ccm or 3 oz per bottle) A pinch of cayenne in each bottle Spring or purified water (fill bottles to the top) Mix all the ingredients by thoroughly shaking; then drink throughout the day. Use fresh lemons or limes only, never canned or frozen lemon juice. Use organic and vine ripened when possible. Also, mix your lemonade fresh just before drinking. Don't mix it up in the morning for the whole day. You can, however, squeeze your lemons in the morning and measure out the 2 tablespoons when needed.
Enhance Your Elimination
This is a cleanse as opposed to a weight loss diet. So, you need to ensure you are eliminating the toxins that are being loosened in your system. Cravings, aches, pains, mental irritability and tiredness will turn on as your toxins are mobilized. To eliminate these unpleasant sensations, you need to be sure you have two, three, or more bowel movements a day.
Drink a laxative herb tea each evening. You can find it in your local health food store. I recommend senna tea blend with senna being about half of it by weight. (Senna is an herb that promotes bowel movement.) The kind I've bought warn you not to drink more than two cups per day.
Each morning on an empty stomach, add two teaspoons of non-iodized sea salt to a full quart of water. Do not use ordinary iodized salt as it will not work properly. Drink the entire quart of salt water first thing in the morning. "Chug" this drink it as fast as possible. Within an hour several bowel movements will likely occur. (You'll need to be by a toilet for half an hour to an hour.) If you do not have several bowel movements, try a little more salt in the water the next day until it works.
Drink the herb laxative tea at night to loosen and the salt water each morning to wash it out. If you can't drink the salt water in the morning, drink the herb laxative tea at night and in the morning.
Breaking Your Fast
Breaking a long fast is very, very important. You should ease your way back to solid food after one or two additional days of juices, orange or grapefruit. If you are going back to raw fruits and vegetables, you may do so on the afternoon of the second day.
If you have been a meat eater and/or milk products consumer, shift to cooked vegetable soup on the afternoon of the second day and a salad for dinner. Keep the lemonade drink as your breakfast drink after that. Of course, you would do better with the least amount of meat and no milk products as they are very productive of mucus and hinder digestion and absorption of nutrients.
Detox Symptoms
Detoxifying literally means removing poisons from your body. Once these poisons are gone, you will feel energetic, vital, happy and healthy. It is the poisons that make us feel tired, mentally confused, irritable, unhappy, depressed and ill. Consequently you should look forward to detoxification.
Unfortunately, when the toxins are mobilized, they will bring about those unpleasant feelings and tempt you to quit the cleanse before you are through. So, you need to understand the symptoms of detoxification and ensure that you drink your laxative tea and salt water to stimulate elimination of those toxins.
My experience with the cleanse and with various people doing it has taught me that whatever symptom I experienced one day, it would be gone the next morning with my bowel movements. It is nevertheless helpful to know when you are detoxifying because it helps you to get through that symptom to know it will be gone tomorrow.
I have grouped the detox symptoms I and others have had into five groups:
1. Cravings I have only known one or two people to be hungry on this cleanse. Drinking more lemonade or water handles that. I have, however, observed that people on the cleanse crave what they are detoxifying. Proof that this is true is that the cravings usually go away the next morning with bowel movements. You can crave anything when detoxifying, but most likely you will experience cravings for the most toxic foods, such as pizza, hamburgers, barbeque ribs, etc.
2. Tiredness When your body fights toxins, whether from detoxifying or an infection, it diverts energy into healing and away from the energy you use to work and play. On my first 20 day cleanse, I was not tired except on the fifteenth day. The next morning, I experienced heat in my bowel movements, an indication that acidic toxins were being eliminated. I also lost all sense of tiredness.
3. Irritability This includes the desire to "just chew something solid."
4. Physical aches, pains, nausea, vomiting, etc. These are the most severe reactions and only occur where a person is severely toxic, only a small percentage of people experience these. Fortunately, these have gone away after only a day or two in every case I have heard about.
5. Hot bowel movements Your body wastes are acidic and when you eliminate the most toxic ones, they actually feel anywhere from warm to burning. This experience is very infrequent, but worth mentioning because hot bowel movements after a day of heavy detox symptoms will confirm that you just eliminated significant toxins.

I love the master cleanse! I have done it a handful of times, ranging from about 10 days all the way down to 1 day (a quick 'reset').
I would suggest that you make sure you have lots of things planned out to do. Go through those papers, clean your house, organize your computer, whatever. When you are fasting, you have to do something with the time you would normally spend dealing with food. That's a few extra hours a day!
If you live with someone, request that they don't eat in front of you. Even better, you go for a walk when they are eating or make them eat out. IT IS HARD to not eat. The first two are the hardest.. but then after day three or four you are constantly questioning -- is it time to break the fast or not? If someone is eating something right next to you, it makes that decision a lot harder to stick with the fast.
Drink as much of the MC as you can! You will need the water and electrolytes and even the sugar. Play with the balance to see what you like.. I found that I liked mine best with less maple and MORE pepper! And watch that pepper level! Some people are very sensitive to it and I had a friend do it with me and she still to this day can not touch that cayanne anymore.. (LOL) After the first day or so, you will start to crave the stuff! It is great..
I find that I am only tired for a day or so on the cleanse, but YMMV. Be sure to allow yourself to rest when you need to .. and walk and do some light exercise when you can -- it keeps the body moving and the toxins purging.
Also, watch out for the smell! Your partner/housemates might not want to be around you.. cleansing people just start to eminate a toxic smell.. LOL It is a good sign! The other symptoms that Druid posted are right on! If/When they come up, be sure to just allow yourself to move through them.. they are the steps to the goal!
I'd like to join in on the fasting! I can't start until Monday though. Too much going on work wise for the next two days and I just know I'll break it. I want to do the 10 days at least. What's your plan?

we can do this! congrats on the juice fast :)
Thanks! I've finished day three! Today was the worst so far, hopefully my body will get into gear soon! I really just need to do stuff to keep myself busy. Today, I got together some raw recipes and put them on index cards and organized them! Kept me occupied for an hour or so :) It's so weird sitting around and not eating, because that's usually what I would be doing! :p I have an appointment with 24 Hour Fitness on Monday(Free 2-week pass! Woo hoo!), so that'll keep me busy somewhat.

Argh! I had to break my fast after 5 days. I was feeling ultra-crummy and I figured it was detox and I was drinking a lot of water, but the water I was drinking was "purified" and had some weird stuff in it. After being on the fast for 4 days I began tasting what was in it and it made me sick to my stomach. And because of (insert long story) I couldn't get new water or fruits to juice. *sigh* I'm going to try it again really soon, though. I really love the light feeling fasting gives me! I hope all of you are doing great on your fasts! How are they going?

I am starting the cleanse today. My motivation - I have a physical for life insurance coming up in 14 days and I want to clean my body out for that. I know...maybe not the best reason but any excuse will do to jumpstart me.
I am working towards a raw food lifestyle and about 20% of my daily food consumption is raw but I want to see that increase to at least 75% daily. Also, I have a very bad habit of drinking wine (white or red), Ben and Jerry's ice cream (Vanilla Caramel Fudge), soda and fast food so eventhough I work out daily I am filling my body with bad things!
I am looking towards this master cleanse to help w/ the cravings for those things not good for me. I am currently 135 lbs looking to get down to at least 125 lbs.

Ok I just did the salt water flush to kick off the Master Cleanse ... let me just say I was ok with about 8/10ths of the flush...the last 2/10ths........came right back up and out!
Yeah it helped elimination alright....it started to really upset my stomach. YIKES!

This is my 2nd day on this and I had to breakdown and eat something solid. I am feeling light headed and woozy and I run daily so I do not want to pass out.
The SWF today was very intense and I was busy with that for at least 1 hour. I started to worry about dehydration.
I figure I will stick to the lemonade and flush for the next 2 weeks but eat some raw fruit and veggies to better sustain me.
Curleedst
11-03-2005, 08:49 PM
This is my 3rd day taking the SWF and I threw up YET AGAIN!!! It does stimulate the bowels. I am taking Smooth Move by Traditional Medicinals which is an organic herbal tea and is taken 8 hours before you want to have that real movement and will take the salt water flush in the morning. I was advised, with the Smooth Move taken the night before it doesn't require much consumption of the SWF (8 to 10 oz should be more than enough with 2 tsp of sea salt). So I will try that today. I made more of my lemonade and am taking Cayenne pills called Cayenne Fruit sold in WALMART vs. putting it in my lemonade.
I am modifying it for a bit but my husband says my eyes look strange tonight. I have been tired the past 3 days especially when I go running on the treadmill but perhaps that is due to the toxins being released.
Any thoughts?

I'm not much of a "chugger" - so 32 ounces is pretty much out of the question. For, say, 16 oz, how much celtic sea salt would that be?
I'm working on the last bit of MC Lemonade ( two lemons instead of one -since I'm used to it, and wow.. I really turned up the BTU's with the cayenne. I can feel it burning all the way past my stomach. That's supposed to be good, right? LOL )
I think my middle name is going to be Samuel

I no longer try to chug 16 oz (I vomit every time). I am sticking to 10 oz of salt water (with 2 tsp regardless of the amount of water).

Hi All,
I haven't been posting much since August when I fell off raw and had a hard time getting back. To make a long story short, I decided before I "decide" anything I need a cleanse.
So here I am. This is not my first MC but I feel it is my most significant to date. You can read my journal in the journal/photo section under RedRose.
I just wanted to encourage those of you who were having a hard time in general with food and need a jumpstart. This is a great cleanse, relatively inexpensive etc. The main thing I would recommend is time. I just finished a full time job the end of September so I do have time at home now to rest if I feel weak etc. I'm sure it can be done but it's harder.
Much success to all of you and I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

I'm on day 3 of my MC. I've done a 6 day and a 9 day MC.
I'm only using 1 tsp celtic sea salt in my quart of water. Today I increased it and now I can't leave the house. I would say this was good had it caused me to have BM's but instead it's just water running through. The other 2 days with 1 tsp, I had regular BM's but smaller amounts compared to when I eat.
I don't seem to get weak or dizzy. I love the feeling when I do the MC. I've had a few thoughts of food, but I'm not even really drawn to it. I attended a dinner at church last night and the food didn't even entice me. I sat at my table and drank my lemonade. When asked I just said I was fasting. No other questions were asked.
In the 3 days I have lost close to 5 pounds. My morning aches and pains seem a little less, as does my headaches during the day. My thyroid meds were cut back and some of my symptoms have come back a little (some of the headaches quite strong). I increased my raw foods and that helped a lot and now I'm doing the MC to try to get rid of all the symptoms, then go back, hopefully to all raw or to very high raw with the symptoms staying away.
I'm posting on another board, so I may or may not post here, but if this thread stays active, I'll give an update.

I am still fasting but find the flush very refreshing. I am getting used to the taste but the salt sucks at times.
Does anybody do swf even when they're not fasting? I tried it during my cleanse, and while it freaks me out a bit to dizzy, narcoleptic and feverish until I pass a bm, its really comforting to unblock my digestive track. I was really backed up, only going once every two days, and after starting a weekly swf, I dont get that problem. As well as drinking the drink when you're not fasting.. that drink is yummy, and so easy to make. I add cinnamon to it alot as well to even out the spicyness.

Started Master Cleanse on Saturday. This being Monday evening, I have officially completed day 3. Definately the toughest day. I've decided that the days I work are much easier than days off, to keep my mind off my growly tummy :p Cooking for others doesn't improve the situation any either. But I feel great, and I'm losing weight! YEAH!!! Will let you know how it all goes. I am commited to the minimum 10 days, with hopes to juice fast all the way into the new year. (I had 35 grief-induced pounds to lose. Have lost 7 so far!!)

Hi MoniDew,
Hope you make the full 10 days. I've done 6 days, 8 1/2 days, and 8 days. This last time I lost (see post on previous page) 7.5 pounds in the 8 days. I've been off of it for about 2 weeks now and only put 2 pounds back on and that was including over the Thanksgiving holidays were I did eat dressing and mashed potatoes (I know - bad!!!! and I'm paying for it with pain). Due to the headaches and joint pains of eating cooked, I'm thinking of trying the MC again to get back on track and to clear up the pain. I would love to make it the full 10+ days. But even more, I would love to get to 100% raw. I've done that for 15 days and saw great improvements.
Keep us posted on how you do on your MC.

Hi Magda,
Yes you can drink water on the MC. In the article it says:
"Never vary the amount of lemon juice per glass. About six glasses of lemonade a day is enough for those wishing to reduce. Extra water may be taken as desired."

I was reading up on this cleanse and I am wondering what to do about medications. I have a med that needs to be taken with food. The cleanse is all liquid (from what I can tell) and continues for more than a week. Any thoughts, suggestions?
Helen Of Tennessee
11-30-2005, 04:26 AM
Hi Meowzr,
Why don't you do a web search on the particular med and see why it has to be taken with food and if it's possible to take it without food. If it's not possible to take it without food, then maybe you'll have to eat a little something (raw) with the med and do the MC the rest of the day. It will defeat the purpose of your digestive system resting for a very long period, but at least your digestive system won't be working overtime by just that one small piece of food. If you eat fruit, it will go through your system pretty fast and won't have to work too hard. You'll still benefit from the MC.
The only meds I'm on are thyroid. When I do the MC I take it without food. I have a choice though with my meds. I can take it with food to slow down the absorbtion or without food to speed up the absorbtion. To be honest, I can't tell any difference if I take it with or without food. Either way it doesn't upset my stomach.

This is my second day of mc and I became shaky, that need to puke and the only thing my stomach could handle was water (it's like it shut down to that other stuff and food). Actually need for plenty of water which kept me feeling better while napping in between drinking it. I'm having a hard time drinking the lemonade (maybe it's the cayenne) and the salt water didn't do anything for me today (put less salt, otherwise wouldn't be able to drink it). I'm working on drinking the lemonade now, and I feel much better now but I feel like I got a "hangover" sypmtoms from this stuff ???

magda..you're detoxing. You usually feel better after your next elimination. Don't worry and just let your body do its thing.
I've done the MC twice before...I'm going to start one on January 2nd, I need to do one now but its hard this time of year with so much going on. I'll definitely need one on January 2nd...anyone else want to start one then? I'll start another post at that time but I'm going to shoot for about 20 days in January.

I am on day three of the mc as well Helen, and everyone. This is the first mc I have done. I have done a 10 juice fast but never a mc. Well day two I was very tired and this morning I weighed myself and I have lost 4.5 lbs!! didn't expect that. I have been very crampy, and i am only consuming about 4-6 8-10oz glasses a day. I haven't felt the need to drink more. I haven't done the salt flush but I drank the smooth move tea in the morning and by lunch it does the trick. Everything is fluid though, is that part normal? Haven't felt an energy increase but I am just on day three!

Greetings Everyone!
I just finished a 15 day Master Cleanse and boy do I feel good! I just want to wish all those who are currently doing the MC the best. Those who are struggling please hang in there don't give up! You can do it! You are dextoxing (quickly). Just keep thinking about how good you are going to feel when your done!
I suggest drinking plenty of water. Main reason it is essential. Second, it will help with filling you up in between and I found that when I drank it it made whatever symptom I was having feel better. Third, it helps to not only assist with eliminating toxins but water is a natural laxitive...at least it was for me. Thanks RawPriestess...when your right your right. I never drank a tea, took a laxative, colonic or enema.
Another suggestion: Scrub, scrub, scrub your skin. The toxins not only come from your nostrils or through elimination. It also seeps through the pores. You will stink a little. Besides it will make your skin feel sooooooooo good! ;)
I have lost 25 pounds. My vision has improved so much that I am constantly taking my glasses off so I can see! I have tons more energy. My vericose veins look like blemishes. Although I have lost a lot of weight my skin is not hanging...I feel my body firming up. Cooked food smells make me nauseous and turn me off! It just tickles me to peices that cook food bothers me! All in all...I just feel good! :)
To break my fast I treated myself to a strawberry, kwiwi (sp), apple juice. I had one tall glass and got so full! So full, so happy and satisfied!
Happy Journey!!

I made it completely through day 5, but ran out of maple syrup and wasn't able to afford buying any more. So I decided the best course of action was to switch over to a juice fast, and just continue the cleansing process as best as I could under the circumstances. I must admit, I feel much hungrier yesterday and today - like I really want to eat! (I know not to do that, the GI tract has to wake up slowly.) I haven't broken the fast yet, but I am considering doing so tomorrow. I've been raw for a long time, but I fell off the wagon a bit, due to multiple grief-inducing incidents hitting me all at once. I really feel like I am back on the right track now. Happy, peaceful, joy-filled. This fast did me a lot of good.

when your doing the mc (I'm new to all this), without the salt water and the laxative tea then do you just drink the lemonade (lemons, maplesyrup, cayenne) and water in between ?
I don't think I want to use that stuff anymore, wondering if that's what your doing for those who are not taking laxatives, enemas. Also, how many of those lemonades does one usually drink ? I drink about 2, one mid afternoon and one in the eve, that's ok ?

Hi Magda,
I never did the tea but I did the salt water flush most mornings . . . mostly because I craved salt and I enjoyed the taste.
When I have done the MC, I would drink 60 oz a day. I would make up 20 oz bottles and have 3 a day.
The article states that you should have between 60oz - 120oz (6-12 ten ounce bottles).
I did the minimum of 60 oz because I was satisfied with that amount, never felt hungry or weak, and I also wanted to lose more weight. Had I felt weak or hungry I would have drank more.
