Like many people, I have tried different diets/eating styles to loose weight or to get healthy. The most successful was Atkins where I lost 50 lbs. BUT even though I felt it was safe, it still bothered me that eating that way, in the long run, would be harmful. What about the vitamins and nutrients? Two years later, I couldn't eat that way any longer and went back to my old ways. And put the weight back on... and then some.

I have been researching about RAW and just a plant based diet in general. It just seems to make sense. Not just for weight loss but for health reasons. I always felt that if there are foods that can harm you then there MUST be foods that can heal you. I started juicing off/on about 9 months ago but then stopped for awhile. Then this past spring I developed GOUT and read that drinking concentrated cherry juice will help eliviate it. It did! Now I am more intrigued about nutrition. I am hypoglycemic, overweight have just been diagnosed with high blood pressure. It's time...

In the mean time, I have been watching a lot of movies regarding the SAD diet and how we have been told a lot of un-truths regrading what we should be eating. These movies were real eye openers:
* Food Matters - Excellent!
* Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead
* Forks Over Knives
* Food, Inc - You'll never eat meat again after watching this movie!
What's On Your Plate

After watching these movies, I am now convinced about the urgency and necessity to eating at least a plant based diet if not RAW. And unlike Atkins, it feels right also. I know I am getting all the vitamins/nutrients I need.
These movies show how people have reduced or eliminated their "problems" after being on a RAW or plant based diet. Of course the doubters will say that they are just claiming that to promote the lifestyle. BUT I believe its true due to my own discoveries. First the GOUT elimination. Second, I have suffered from aches/pains, tendinitis, etc., for many, many years. I have always been in pain and just got used to it. Recently after developing some eye issues, I went back to juicing earnestly for the last two weeks. I am also an advid golfer and I usually would have to take Advil before playing to help with the pain. What I noticed is that in this last week I have played golf 6 times in 6 days and I have not needed to take any Advil before OR after. Only time will tell if it's the juice but I believe it is.

Next I will try a detox for 3 days to see how my body reacts. If all okay, I will continue for 10 days. More importantly, I feel I am on the right track with this.

If you haven't seen these movies, watch them. They are very good.

Didn't Atkins die of organ failure or something like that?
It's really important to pay attention to your body and emotions as you try different foods and diets. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't right for you.

I haven't heard of Food Matter or What's on Your Plate but the others are indeed worth watching.

All the best with your detox!

Wouldn't that be the definition of death? ;)

I have to say when I was a passionate carnivore I was convinced I needed all that protein. Although I don't buy into all of the hype that is associated with vegan and raw vegan rationale, the health benefits are unquestionable. These movies have certainly helped to shape my view.

Hi Jevans. I also did atkins aka slow death diet. Lost 90; gained back 80 during last ten yrs. I want to get healthy as you also want to do. My pain is a motivator for me. So glad to hear that you can golf without advil now.
Those are great movies. Also, "Earthlings" and all of Michael Greger's DVD's on clinical nutrition helped me.
Peace, Bonnie
