So I think that I am going to do it. I didn't want a dehydrator, but squash and zucchini are just soooo cheap and I am getting like 10 squash a week in my CSA and I can not eat them all so I think that I want a dehydrator (also for apples and berries which are CHEAP at my farmers market.

I was looking at this one (http://www.amazon.com/Nesco-American-FD-61-Snackmaster-Dehydrator/dp/B000CEM3WM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top). I really can't spend more than 50-60 dollars. What do you guys think?

I think it will be fine because it has a temperature control with it but i recommend to save money every week and get the excalibur because it allow versatility with recipes (size and space). You will probably manage with this little one but this is your call.

You could freeze these product too.

I would love the Excalibur, I just don't really have the space for it (it's kinda big right?). I live in a small apartment with my wife and 8 month old with limited counter space and with a baby putting something on the floor just won't work :)

I did see this though (http://www.amazon.com/Food-Pantrie-Hanging-Dehydrator/dp/B001KYNR1O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314942514&sr=8-1). Other than some strap issues it seems that it might work (actually the issues with the straps have been fixed). Has anyone tried it?

Not sure how that last one would dehydrate - are you in IL(humid!) The consensus here in past discussions seems to be that the Nesco is OK if you can't afford the Excalibur. Go for it.

Thanks!

I was worried about that last one also ... and it is sooo humid here (Yep, Illinois). It sounds like a good idea, but I don't want to waste 50 dollars and then have a bunch of rotten food.

You can usually find the round dehydrators on craigslist for a few bucks. Even thrift stores have been known to have them. Always see them at garage sales.

I just found a Good4U (Excalibur knock off) on craigslist. Very happy with it.

Good luck.

I have a friend who has a nesco. It is not great for making breads since you have the hole in the middle, but she likes it enough and it fit her budget, so she's happy with it. I have an excalibur, but if I really couldn't afford it, I'd have had no qualms about getting a Nesco based on her experience/review.
